Perhaps lost amid the concern of five
new offensive linemen trying to mesh
together is the pleasant reality that the
Miami Dolphins are now set at tackle for
years to come. A weakness has become a
strength. A question mark has become an
exclamation point. Were beginning to see it
every Sunday.
At left tackle youve got Branden Albert,
a seven-year veteran in the prime of his
career. At right tackle youve got JaWuan
James, the rookie out of Tennessee who has
been a starter since the day he arrived. A
mutual respect already has been formed.
They talk all the time, occasionally have din-
ner together and learn from one another.
For the most part, Albert is the teacher and
James the pupil.
But what is clear now, even after just four
games, is that the Dolphins no longer have
reason for concern at two of the most impor-
tant two positions on the offensive line. Yes,
you can now put a big check next to offen-
sive tackle and do so with clarity and confi-
dence.
I like the kid, Albert says of James. He
has his eyes wide open. He asks the right
questions. Yeah, we have a chance to be
together here for a while.
Across the locker room, James is slowly
getting dressed. He hears of the words spo-
ken by Albert and a soft smile creases his
lips. I learn so much from him. Right now
Im trying to learn his punch move. Hes such
a good player, a good person. Im really for-
tunate to have him here.
Hes such a good player, a good person.
Im really fortunate to have him here.
JAWUAN JAMES on BRANDEN ALBERT (71)

DOLPHINS VS. PACKERS | 11
This isnt window dressing; this is real.
Albert sees a lot of himself in James, while
James sees what he wants to become in
Albert. They share the same position and
the same passion for what they do. Albert
signed a long-term contract this past offsea-
son; James has a four-year rookie contract
thats just beginning.
Im in my prime and hes young, Albert
said. Its a pretty good combination.
Pretty good indeed.
You look at these two players and they
are both very similar, both prototypical
offensive tackles. Albert is 6-5, 310. James is
6-6, 315. Both are exceptionally strong. Both
seem to relish going up against some of the
top defensive ends in the league. Both are
kind, soft-spoken men who will look you in
the eye when they talk and thank you when
youre done.
Considering where the Dolphins were at
offensive tackle only a season ago and con-
sidering where they are now, it has been a
remarkable change in such a short period
of time. There is stability now. There is a
clear direction. There are two players who
share a similar determination, a similar
pedigree.
No longer, it appears, can defensive ends
feast on quarterback Ryan Tannehill. A pair
of imposing roadblocks now stand in their
way.
They are both smart guys, said Head
Coach Joe Philbin. They are both good

people who come to work each day with a
good attitude.
Lets start with Albert, who has quickly
shown he is well worth the large-dollar con-
tract he signed with the Dolphins. Up until
this point, he has been the model of consis-
tency. He is so efficient you hardly notice him
out there. But his teammates have noticed
and what they see is substance and stability.
Listen to defensive end Olivier Vernon,
who goes up against Albert every day at
practice.
I see why hes a Pro Bowler, Vernon
said. He so strong, so aggressive that he
causes you problems on every play. Im sure
glad hes on our side.
While Albert goes up against Vernon
each day, James goes up against All-Pro
Cameron Wake. Can you think of a better
way to get ready for NFL Sundays? Wake
has shown James every move in his vast
repertoire and the upside of this has already
been evident. James went up against
Buffalos All-Pro defensive end Mario
Williams earlier this season and did a credi-
ble job.
Said center Samson Satele: I told
(James) that once he really learns this game,
hes going to be unstoppable. He doesnt
play like a rookie. Nope, he plays like a vet-
eran.
Yeah, Albert said of James, the kid is
getting better every day.
The kid and the Pro Bowler. Think about
what they mean to this team. Think about
what they can accomplish together. And
perhaps the most tantalizing part of it all:
This is just the beginning.
TACKLES, from page 11
I told him that once
he really learns this
game, hes going to
be unstoppable.
He doesnt play like
a rookie. Nope,
he plays like
a veteran.

The Dolphins won the first eight
games between the teams, starting
in 1971 with a 27-6 victory at the
Orange Bowl through a 24-14
victory at Milwaukee in 1994.
The Dolphins 16-13 victory against
the Packers in 1991 when nose
tackle Chuck Klingbeil recovered
a fumble in the end zone to tie the
score in the fourth quarter marked
the 300th career victory for Hall of
Fame coach Don Shula.
When the Packers won 34-24 in
Miami on Oct. 22, 2006, their
starting left tackle was current
Dolphins starting guard Daryn
Colledge.
The highest passing yardage total
for a Dolphins quarterback against
Green Bay came in that 2006 game
when Joey Harrington threw for
414 yards while attempting 62
passes, a Dolphins regular season
record.
The Dolphins have had only one
100-yard rusher in their 13
meetings with the Packers, that
being Mercury Morris, who gained
125 yards on 31 carries in a 31-7
Miami victory in 1975.

Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin spent
nine seasons (2003-11) as an assistant
coach with the Packers before coming to
Miami, first as assistant offensive line
coach (2003), then as tight ends/assistant
offensive line coach (2004-05), then as
offensive line coach (2006), and finally as
offensive coordinator (2007-11).
Dolphins linebackers coach Mark Duffner
served in the same capacity with the
Packers from 2003-05.
Dolphins guard Daryn Colledge spent his
first five seasons (2006-10) in the NFL with
the Packers, starting 76 games during his
time in Green Bay.
Dolphins head strength and conditioning
coach Darren Krein was claimed off
waivers by the Packers in 1995 following
his rookie season as an NFL defensive end
but did not see any game action with
Green Bay.
Packers defensive coordinator Dom
Capers was special assistant to the head
coach for the Dolphins in 2006 and defen-

Can Miami slow down surging Packers?
By ALAIN POUPART
@apoupartFins
The Dolphins return to action today
following their bye with one of their
most attractive and challenging
home dates of the 2014 season.
The Green Bay Packers are at Sun
Life Stadium for a game that matches
Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin
against the team for which he worked
for nine seasons before coming to
Miami.
More importantly, the game matches
the Dolphins against one of the most
prolific teams in the NFL, and certainly
one of the hottest.
The Packers come to Sun Life
Stadium fresh off convincing victories
against NFC North opponents Chicago
and Minnesota where they won by an
average score of 40-14.
The two routs came after quarter-
back Aaron Rodgers urged panicked
Packers fans to relax following a 19-7 loss
against Detroit that left Green Bay with a 1-2
record.
Rodgers certainly has done his part to
make the Packers faithful feel at ease.
Arguably the best quarterback in the NFL
today, Rodgers is off to a sensational start
with 12 touchdown passes, only one intercep-
tion, a completion percentage of 66.7 and a
passer rating of 114.8.
The Green Bay running game also came
to life in the Thursday night victory against
the Vikings, with 2013 NFL Offensive Rookie
of the Year Eddie Lacy rushing for 105 yards
and two touchdowns. This came after Lacy
had rushed for only 161 yards in the first four
games combined with a per-carry average
never higher than 3.3 yards.
After a tough start in the opener against
the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle
Seahawks, the Green Bay defense has come
on as well. In particular, the Packers have
been proficient at forcing turnovers, with 10
takeaways in five games.
New linebacker Julius Peppers, the for-
mer Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears
defensive end, returned an interception for a
touchdown in the 42-10 victory against
Minnesota.
The Packers head into todays game tied
with the Detroit Lions atop the NFC North
standings with a 3-2 record and, by the looks
of the last two weeks, they appear well on
their way to a sixth consecutive playoff
appearance.
The Dolphins will be looking to slow down
Rodgers and company today.
Running back Eddie Lacy endured a slow start to
the 2014 season, but hes coming off a big
performance in a victory against Minnesota.

GAME PLAN LAST TIME
The Dolphins recorded their first overtime
victory since 2007 when Dan Carpenter hit
a 44-yard field goal to cap a 26-yard drive
on the third possession of the extra period.
Green Bays only possession of overtime
produced a three-and-out after Cameron
Wake recorded his third sack of the game
on third down.
The Dolphins led 20-13 until Packers QB
Aaron Rodgers scored on a 1-yard run with
13 seconds left in regulation on fourth-
and-goal.
Miamis two touchdowns came on a 2-yard
pass from Chad Henne to Davone Bess in
the first quarter and a 22-yard pass from
Henne to tight end Anthony Fasano in the
fourth.

GAME DAY HEAD COACHS CORNER
Q. What do you envision you will be feel-
ing when youre looking across the
field and seeing the team for which
you served as an assistant coach for
nine years?
Your loyalties change quickly. Obviously I
had a lot of strong feelings for a lot of peo-
ple there. When you invest nine years of
your life at one particular place, you form
hopefully some strong relationships with a
lot of different people, but at the end of the
day its a football game. Im a Miami Dolphin
now. My thoughts will really be on getting
our team playing up to their potential
Sunday at 1 oclock.
Q. What have you told your players when
theyve been in similar situations, as
the was the case with Branden Albert
facing the Kansas City Chiefs earlier
this season?
Not much. We all have a job to do. The
more you make it about the team and the
less about the individual, the better off youre
going to be. Certainly this game is not about
me because I used to work for the Green Bay
Packers. This is about were a 2-2 football
team. Weve got to get better and play well
at home and win the first game off our bye.
Q. How much of an influence on your
coaching career was Packers Head
Coach Mike McCarthy?
I think the world of Mike. Hes not only a
tremendous football coach but just an out-
standing human being and family man,
everything. It was an honor to work for him.
I learned a lot and just think the world of
him.
Q. How have the different skill sets of
the tight ends been used this season?
I think Dion (Sims) has contributed nicely
in the first (four) games. Hes a little bit differ-
ent body type than Charles (Clay) as you can
tell. So he doesnt do exactly the same things
all the time you know. I think thats part of
game planning. You have to utilize the
strengths and the skills of your particular
players that you have. I think Gator Hoskins is
a young player thats developing. He hasnt
gotten a lot of battlefield action yet in the
regular season games. He is athletic and he is
very smart.
Q. What progress have you seen from cor-
Head Coach
Joe Philbin
Second-year tight end Dion Sims has made a
nice contribution to the offense early in the
season.
26,27-PHILBIN COLUMN 10/6/14 3:39 PM Page 1
nerbacks Jamar Taylor and Will Davis,
and are they ready for a bigger role?
Yeah, I think they have. I think theyre a
lot like our entire football team where
theyve got to become more consistent.
Theyve got to produce on a consistent
level week in and week out. I dont know
that that should be a shock to anybody
since they didnt play a ton of football last
year and theyre kind of young in their
developmental stage. I think thats one
thing were looking for. Certainly, (Ive) seen
some very good things out of both of them.
Now, we would like to see it on a more con-
sistent basis.
Q. Have the new rules in place for prac-
ticing and training camp
affected the quality of play
on the defensive side of the
ball?
I dont think so. Everybody is
under the same guidance or
guidelines. So we all adjust to it.
We adapt to it. We tweak our
practices here and there, and I
still think there is enough time to
get all the fundamentals taught.
Q. How much of a surprise has
Jelani Jenkins production at
linebacker been?
You are never exactly sure how
a player is going to perform until
sometimes that baptism under
fire or whatever you want to call it.
But I really like the way he played
the game. I think the big thing is
his play speed has been very
good and hes been decisive. He
hasnt been perfect yet, but hes
made some plays as you men-
tioned. Hes been involved. Hes
been around the football. You have to like
what hes done so far.
Q. How has guard Daryn Colledge
changed as a person and as a player in
the time you have known him?
Not a whole lot. Hes very professional. I
remember interviewing him at the combine.
I spent a lot of time with him there. I was the
offensive line coach (for the Green Bay
Packers) at that point in time, so I knew we
were going to be drafting somebody that
potentially could have to play. He was a left
tackle coming out. Hes a pro. He just shows
up every day early. He puts his helmet on,
buckles his chinstrap, goes to work. Hes a
good family man. Hes a professional guy.
DOLPHINS VS. PACKERS | 27
Cornerback Jamar Taylor has made nice progress in his

consistency.

Pro Career: Became the ninth coach in Dolphins history on January
20, 2012. Philbin joined Miami after serving as the offensive coor-
dinator with the Green Bay Packers from 2007-2011. During that
era, his offense ranked in the top 10 in points scored and total yards
every season. In five seasons at the helm of the Packers prolific
offense, the team scored 2,263 points (third in the NFL during that
span). In 2011, the Packers set franchise records for victories (15),
points (560) and total yards (6,357). The 560 points ranked second
in NFL history. In 2008-09, the Packers became the first team in
league annals to have a 4,000-yard passer (Aaron Rodgers), a
1,200-yard rusher (Ryan Grant) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Greg Jennings, Donald Driver) in con-
secutive seasons. Philbin joined the Packers in 2003 as an assistant offensive line coach. He served
as the tight ends/assistant offensive line coach from 2004-05 and offensive line coach in 2006.
Background: Philbin played one year at Washington & Jefferson, where he earned his degree in soci-
ology. He has coached collegiately at Tulane (1984-85), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1986-87),
Allegheny (1990-93), Ohio (1994), Northeastern (1995-96), Harvard (1997-98) and Iowa (1999-2002).

The Miami Dolphins, through their Special
Teams Driven by Chevy Volunteer pro-
gram, partnered with AARP Foundation to
pack and deliver 1 million meals for indi-
viduals 50 and older in South Florida and
support Feeding South Florida with the
donation.
More than 4,000 volunteers donated
their time at Sun Life Stadium the day
before the home game against the Kansas
City Chiefs, including a significant number
of youth sports teams, churches and com-
munity groups, to pack 150,000 pounds of
food for those less fortunate.
It was so exciting to be out here today.
The energy inside and outside the tent was
incredible. Seven percent of older Floridians
are at risk of hunger each and every day,
AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh
Ryerson said. It took a lot of people that
were dedicated to the cause and the reason
why it worked was because the Miami
Dolphins and AARP Foundation were both
committed to helping people in need in the
community. These nutritious, high quality
meals help people get food that will be
incredibly meaningful in their lives.
It was an amazing thing to see thou-
sands of volunteers help pack meals today,
Dolphins President/CEO Tom Garfinkel said.
It really hammers home the idea of
stronger together for all of South Florida to
join in this great event.
A spirited environment of altruism
remained the theme of the day, with mascot
T.D., Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders, the
Miami Dolphins Womens Organization,
more than 25 Dolphins alumni and thou-
sands of enthusiastic volunteers packed
over 950,000 meals. In total, one million
meals will be distributed in the South
Florida community.

The bye week was important. It was really impor-
tant. You kind of get rejuvenated. You played four
preseason games and then another maybe six reg-
ular season games or so. A lot of times the bye
week fell around the halfway mark of the season. It
was really good for me to get away from football for
a few days and focus on family and friends and then
get my mind ready to go for the final stretch of the
season.
Having the bye early in the season is not very
good. If you get it in week 4 or 5 you still have 12
games left and thats a tough end of the season. Its
good to get it closer to the middle of the season or
even closer to the end. If you have 10 games and
then a bye week and then six games at the end that
felt a lot better than having it early and then having
a long stretch. We were always in the playoffs as
well, so you had 12 games and a couple of playoff
games and it became a long season. This season
the Dolphins had the bye in Week 5 and it is tough
because you still have a long season ahead of you.
In my rookie year of 1993 we had two bye weeks.
It was a good thing for me because I was young and
dumb but it still made the season long. Im glad
they made the bye week one week. It was a little bit
too much.
I think we as players need a bye week to get our
bodies and our minds right. The older I got, the
more important the bye week was. As a young guy,
I would probably go to Penn State where I went to
school or to Vegas or something. But as I got older
it became more about getting off my feet and relax-
ing.
We were 4-0 during my career under Coach
Shula in the week after a bye. He gave us an
incentive and let us out for the week for four to
five days or whatever. But we had to make sure
we came back and played well. If we didnt come
back and play well, there is no way we would get
that time off. The fact we played well after every
bye week was because Coach let us have that
time off.
THIS ISSUE: O.J. McDUFFIE on the importance of the bye week

1. How certain are you that you have to yet to play your
best season?
JO: How certain am I? The way you say it, it sounds like a neg-
ative. You should have said: How certain are you that you can
keep progressing as a football player? In that case, I would
agree with you. I havent had my best season yet. I can play bet-
ter. I will play better. It comes from experience. It comes from
being able to put myself in a place of self-reflection on and off the
field. Becoming more efficient. Being able to focus.
2. Is it still as much fun as it used to be?
JO: Yes, but different things become more
fun. All the things that are fun now arent neces-
sarily on-the-field stuff. Its off-the-field stuff
that correlates how you are in the building,
whether you have the right mind-set. Now
that Im a little older, staying inside and
reading a book isnt so bad anymore.
Watching one of my HBO shows isnt so
bad instead of hanging outside and
enjoying all the things South Florida has
to offer. I get it now. I understand what
the veterans were talking about when
I first got here in 2010.
3. OK, now to the heavy stuff:
How would you describe your
hair?
JO: How would I describe my hair? It
grows. Once I have to do too much main-
tenance to it, then Im going to cut it. Im
not there yet. I just twist my hair. Nothing goes
in it. No special formula. It impresses some. No, it
impresses all. I was looking to be modest. But why be
modest? I think it looks awesome.
4. This is your fifth season. Youve yet to
enjoy a winning season. Do you have a gut
feeling about this team?
JO: The gut feeling I get is how much talent
we have. We are so talented in a lot of positions,
especially in our defensive line room. I cant say
enough about them. Some of the young guys
are so talented and they dont even know what
they have yet. Its funny that you can get to
10 QUESTIONS WITH JARED ODRICK

this level and not know what you have. We
have so much talent; it would be a shame if
we werent able to use all this talent individu-
ally and collectively.
5. Did you get to this level and not know
what you had?
JO: Yes and no. When you are 22 and you
are a first-round draft pick, sometimes you say
to yourself: Hey, there may not be much
room to grow. But there is tons of room to
grow. There are so many things to learn about
how to play the defensive line in the NFL. Our
D-line coach Kacy Rodgers really does a great
job of showing us all how to really play this
game. Im far better than I was when I first got
here. There were things I had to learn. Using
my hands as opposed to just my body and
speed. Thats a great example.
6. What do you tell younger players
about keeping steady during the ups and
downs of an NFL season?
JO: Im sure that theyve weathered
storms before in terms of college football.
Every team that youve played on, youve
gone through adversity. So at some point, Im
sure youve had to deal with adversity before.
Is it different in the NFL? Sure. The stakes are
higher. Its just a matter of staying focused on
things that you can control when stuff hits the
fan. Its really a matter of, I guess, monitoring
your expectations, number one, and then also
just really being able to control what you can
control because there are a lot of things that
you want to be able to change but youre not
capable of doing it. So work on the things that
you can control and do your part.
7. Is there a mental aspect to not taking
opponents lightly?
JO: Yeah, each week you dont take your
opponent lightly, and, if you do, youre mak-
ing a huge mistake because it is the NFL. Its
the premier league for football where you
have great athletes, great players, and great
coaching all across the board. You cant
underestimate anybody or anything that
youre going up against.
8. The Dolphins struggled some stopping
the run last season. How much improve-
ment do you expect?
JO: Its a major point of emphasis. Its
something you know you have to stop. We
know there were shortcomings last season,
but that was last season. We have to have the
right mind-set to consistently stop the run and
I believe this defense has that.
9. How do you pace yourself for a
marathon season like this?
JO: Get away when you can. Go home,
chill out, speak to people who arent involved
with football. Put your mind somewhere else.
Relax your body. Its hard to do when you are
in the building, but once I am home I try to
transfer to homebody Jared. If somebody
doesnt say they dont feel worn down in
December theyd be fibbing. Its become our
norm. Its normal for me to feel tired.
10. Everybody loves to dissect first-
round picks. Have you already proven
you were worthy?
JO: Thats for you guys to decide. I felt
worthy of it since I got here. I think in terms of
dissecting first-round picks, it can get pretty
crazy. If someone comes in as a first-rounder
and plays well, its like, Thats what we
expected. But if you have a fourth- or fifth-
rounder that plays well, then people say, Oh,
we have a steal there. Its different standards
placed on somebody because someone
chose to select them in the first round. That
was somebody elses decision, not mine. I feel
like Ive worked hard and Ill continue to work
harder and harder to do everything I can for
this team and be the type of player that I want
to be.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: THE DOLPHINS INTERNATIONAL GAM
74 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK
The Miami Dolphins have been the NFLs
globetrotters in their history, having played
regular season games in London (twice) and
Toronto as well as preseason contests in
London, Berlin, Tokyo and Mexico City.
On Oct. 28, 2007, the Dolphins battled
the New York Giants at Londons Wembley
Stadium before a crowd of 81,176 in the
first-ever NFL regular season game that was
staged outside of North America. The
Dolphins and Bills took part in the NFLs first-
ever regular season game staged in Canada
on Dec. 7, 2008 as Miami recorded a 16-3
victory at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. On
Sept. 28, 2014, the Dolphins returned to
Wembley Stadium and earned a 38-14 win
against the Oakland Raiders before a crowd
of 83,436.
The Dolphins are one of four teams to
have played two regular season games in
England, joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
(2009, 2011), New England Patriots (2009,
2012) and San Francisco 49ers (2010, 2013).
From 1986-2003, the NFL held American
Bowl games and the Dolphins made four
appearances in the preseason series. Miami
was 4-0 in those games played on foreign
soil, with wins in London (1988), Tokyo (1991),
Berlin (1992) and Mexico City (1997). The
Dolphins became the first NFL team to win
four American Bowl contests, and they also
became the first team to win an American
Bowl matchup in each of the three conti-
nents in which the games have been played.
When they played in Tokyo, the Dolphins
traveled almost 15,000 miles roundtrip
(14,912, to be exact), making it the longest
road trip in team history. For all of their pre-
vious international games, the Dolphins
traveled more than 47,500 miles, or roughly
the equivalent of two complete trips around
the earth at the equator.

MY GENERATION THIS WEEK: WIDE RECEIVERS By NATASHA THOMAS
1. Who is the toughest cornerback you
have faced?
Antonio Cromartie was a pretty good
matchup for me because hes fast, hes long,
he has good recovery speed, he under-
stands routes and splits and hes just a good
football player.
2. Who sets the bar at your position?
Theres a bunch of them. Theres
Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre
Johnson, A.J. Green and Brandon
Marshall. Those guys, I think, are at the
top of their game at their sport and kind
of set the standard.
3. What player did you admire growing up?
Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Eric Metcalf and
Emmitt Smith. Those are the guys I liked to
watch when I was younger.
4. What has been the most memorable
moment of your career?
Its probably my game-winner against
Buffalo in 2012 because of the situation and
the actual play. There was less than a minute
left (48 seconds) and we were down 13-7 and
I had to leave my feet in the end zone to
make the catch.
5. What coach had the biggest influence
on your playing career?
My college position coach (Michael
Levenseller) and my high school basketball
coach (Rod Iverson). Those two taught me a
lot and I think really made me a tougher ath-
lete and a better person.

78,79-MY GENERATION 10/6/14 5:54 PM Page 1
1. Who was the toughest cornerback you
faced?
The first ones that come to mind that
were the toughest were Troy Vincent and
J.B Brown that were on my team. Guys like
Ty Law was always tough to deal with
because he was strong, fast, and had long
arms.
2. Who set the bar at your position?
Mark Duper, Mark Clayton and Nat
Moore set the bar really high. I got a chance
to play with guys like Irving Fryar, Mark
Ingram and Tony Martin.
3. What player did you admire growing up?
I was a big O.J. Simpson fan because I
was named after him. I liked players like
Tony Dorsett and Franco Harris. I loved a lot
of really good running backs from back in
the day.
4. What was the most memorable
moment of your career?
Living in Cleveland, Ohio, when I got
drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Second will
probably be my first touchdown. It was a
punt return on a Sunday night game against
the Colts. Catching Dan Marinos 400th
touchdown pass was the third-most memo-
rable moment in football for me.
5. What coach had the biggest influence
on your playing career?
My uncle Homer was my coach until I
was 13 or 14 years old. He was my first
coach. My high school football coach,
Coach Walton, was the guy who really
taught me how to be a team player and
accept my role on the team. He found a way
to get me going and involved in the game.
I think I became more of a team player
because of Coach Walton.

THE LAST WORD BY ANDY COHEN
Ryan Tannehill got the step-up perform-
ance he needed against the Oakland
Raiders. He was brilliant in so many ways.
But what Tannehill needs to do now, and
what will help define him as a quarterback, is
to follow up that performance with another
solid one today against Green Bay. And then
another one next Sunday against the Bears.
See, its all about consistency with
Tannehill. He hasnt shown nearly enough of
it in his 36 starts. He has looked good, then
he has struggled. He has thrown some of the
nicest passes youll see and then some ques-
tionable ones.
What he needs to do now is string a few
positive performances together because
thats what separates where hes at and where
he wants to be.
You have to come out and play every
week, Tannehill said. Im excited about the
step that I took and that the offense took. But
we have to build off it. Its just a step.
Nonetheless, an important step. What
Tannehill accomplished against the Oakland
Raiders should be remembered and savored.
A lovely trip to London, wasnt it?
There are many reasons the Dolphins are
2-2 today, why they disposed so easily of the
Raiders and why their season offers real
promise once again. Tannehills performance
simply stood out above everything else.
Tannehill hovered between splendid and
brilliant most of that day two Sundays ago. In
fact, this was as good an overall performance
as I have seen by a Dolphins quarterback in
far too long.
At one point, Tannehill completed 14
straight passes. Thats heady stuff. All told, he
hit on all but eight of his 31 passes and threw
for 278 yards and two scores. He looked so
poised, so confident, so right. His passes
were pure and accurate, often hitting his
receiver in perfect stride. His touchdown pass
Revisiting Tannehills
magical day
82,83-LAST WORD 10/6/14 3:42 PM Page 1
to tight end Dion Sims that made it 24-7
showed a highlight reel touch. He found
Brian Hartline down the middle of the seam
on a gorgeous throw and Mike Wallace on a
quick out. He ran. He directed. He smiled. He
did everything but pilot the charter back to
the States.
The hot seat? Yeah, Tannehill was on the
hot seat. In fact, he couldnt have been much
hotter. Scorching is probably more accurate,
especially in the first half when he literally put
on a passing clinic. How do you figure?
Except for one half against New England,
Tannehill struggled for two-plus games. His
passes were off target, his confidence could
have been shaken. And then this? Talk about
making a statement; this was loud, bold and
clear.
But, as I wrote at the start of this column,
this was only one game. For this sunny
English day to really have lasting meaning,
Tannehill must step up again today against
the Packers. No, were not expecting some-
thing quite like the Raiders game again. But
consistent? Accurate? Smart? Thats the level
he needs to reach on an every-game basis.
As I evaluate the whys of Tannehills per-
formance against the Raiders, I believe sever-
al factors contributed.
I think Tannehill simply had enough of his
mediocre play. I think he reached a point
where he dug down deep and decided it was
time to make his stand as a player. He was
angry and determined, a nice concoction of
emotions that can often result in what we saw
against the Raiders. I also think he has slowly
gotten more and more comfortable with this
new offense and a shaky Raiders defense
only escalated the process.
Indeed, it was a day Tannehill will proba-
bly never forget, and shouldnt forget. But it
was only one day. Today is the next chal-
lenge. Will Tannehill make it two in a row?

Ryan Tannehill responded to the
challenge heading into the game

perhaps the best performance of his
