Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association (DLWCA) October 2013

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

And the winner of the Edward P. Day
Memorial Award is Pat Stout.
Pat had the distinction of actually being
a neighbor of Edward P. Day.

I hope you are enjoying this delightful
early fall weather. Leaves are beginning
to change and a chill is in the air.

Two block parties were held in Dunn
Loring Woods during the past month
and both were very successful. It looks
like Syracuse Circle started something.
Speaking of Syracuse Circle, the
residents once again are handling the
Neighborhood Watch for the month of
October.

This year our Electric Sunday pick-up
will be in October. See notice on page 2.

We have announcements about the 67
th

Annual Halloween Parade in Vienna on
page 3 and two new activities in the
neighborhood on page 4.

2013-2014 DLWCA Membership
Drive Is Underway
The Annual Membership Drive began
September 15 when the Block Captains
began canvassing of their assigned
blocks and ends October 31, 2013.
They have been task to make two
attempts to personally reach you and if
not successful will leave the paperwork
in/on your door. If you have not been
contacted yet, you might not have a
block captain for your street and you
will receive your dues notice through the
mail. Dues are still $15.00 and we ask
that you pay by check or cash. If by
check, make the check out to DLWCA.
We have been fortunate to have the
support of many local businesses in the
area to help defray the cost of printing of
the Dunn Loring Woods (DLW)
directory. If you would like to place a
business or personal ad in the 2014-2015
DLW Directory, please contact Melvin
Rose at 703-573-2076.

Pat Stout - Winner of the Edward P. Day Award for 2013
At the membership meeting on September 17, Ken Quincy announced that Pat Stout is
the winner of the 2013 Edward P. Day Award.
Pat is pictured here with Ken Quincy.
Pat has been a resident of Dunn Loring Woods
since 1994 after moving from Stonewall Manor.
She actually lived next door to Ed Day and his
wife Margaret until they moved to Sunrise in
late 2002. Pat has been involved with the Civic
Association since spring of 1994 when Jean
Moore asked her to help out with the
membership and the production of the 95-97
DLW directory. Nineteen years later she is still
involved with membership and the DLW
directory. She has been active with the Girl
Scouts for over 52 years including time served as
a Brownie for three years. She started as a co-
leader in Oxon Hill, MD and then became a scout
leader and involved with other activities with the Girl Scouts all over the world until she
moved to Stonewall Manor in 1974. There she was a leader at Our Lady of Good
Counsel for her youngest daughter and then 12 years ago she assisted her daughter with
her Daisy troop at Stenwood. She was made Chairman of the Nations Capital Cookie
Sale in 1984 and is still serving in that capacity. In 2005, she assisted with the 40th
Anniversary Party held at Stenwood. In her spare time, she delivers the Lantern,
helps with the flag distribution and serves as a contact for Electric Sundays and the
holiday decorating contest. She has also taken over Jean Moores job welcoming
everyone to the membership meetings. Congratulations, Pat!

Syracuse Circle Continues Tradition
On Saturday, September 7
th
, the families on Syracuse Circle gathered for their 51
st
Consecutive
Annual Block Party. While the format, season, locale and committees have changed from the
ones organized by Joe Murphy at the beginning of these festivities, the same warm friendly
atmosphere prevailed with many new faces from the recent arrivals of four new owners/
renters on the Circles cul-de- sac, and lots of grandchildren.

After the opening formal ceremonies and introduction of the newest families, the invited
firemen from Merrifield Station 430 joined in the action of the kids water balloon toss games,
and ALL of the participants got thoroughly saturated. Good food, childrens prizes, lots of
laughter and camaraderie made the 51
st
another annual success.

The Vienna Connection had a feature article about this event in their newspaper, dated
September 11-17, 2013.

Another DLW Block Party
It seems like everyone is having block parties this year. On September 22, Jen Schwartz
organized a block party held on Drexel Street between Colby and Winder. The weather and
neighbors cooperated nicely to pull off what hopes to be an annual event! We had a surprise
visit from Jimmie Johns sub shop offering menus, coupons and free samples. Grills were
manned by our chef volunteers and ALL brought lots of burgers, dogs, sides and drinks. The
moon bounce was enjoyed by old and young alike and trampolines were put to the stress test of
5-15 young ones! This was pulled together quickly and without a lot of knowledge of the process
for closing a road. We regret that our google group titles were Block party as it was
intended for all of DLW and SM. We hope to add some music next year and well be sure to get
notice in the newsletters early for the 2
nd
Annual NEIGHBORHOOD party. Cant wait to see
everyone out there.

I would like to thank the Syracuse Circle residents for handling Neighborhood Watch during the month
of October. Next month if you would like to volunteer for Neighborhood Watch, please call Mark Hann at

Craft Club for Children Now Open in Dunn Loring Woods

A new craft club has opened in our neighborhood. The Craft Club first
class took place on Friday, September 20. There were four girls and
we had a lot of fun!

I am Isabella Lawen, crafter and party planner and I've decided to
combine my passion for crafting with classes! The idea is to
anticipate major holidays and have children work in different style
crafts
For a brochure or additional information, please email [email protected]

HOW DOES THE CRAFT CLUB WORK?

Classes are held every Friday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, allowing parents to enjoy a nice
time out! The Craft Club is for kids ages 6 to 10 working in groups of 4 to 6 kids.

Check the activities calendar, pick a Friday, send me an email. It is as simple as that!

Thank you.
