Smells Like Ace

by Nathan Kranzo
Effect

This is a straightforward 4 Ace production.

Setup

The order from the top of the face-down deck is: Indifferent card, ace, ace, face-up ace, majority of the
deck, and the fourth ace on the bottom. All cards are face down except the face up ace 4th from the
top. Cut the deck and hold a break. Perform a dribble, or riffle force, asking someone to call out stop.
Cut to the break and complete the cut bringing the set up back to its original order.
Turn over the top, indifferent card, securing a fourth finger break beneath the second card (ace) in the
process. Square up and grab the two cards above the break as one. Insert the double into the
outer end of the deck (closer to the bottom than the middle), leaving it out-jogged for half its length.
Riffle down the left side of the deck with your left thumb until you get about half way down. Flip this
half into your right hand so that it lands face-down.
Several things now happen at once. Your right hand performs Brrrrtttt! by Bruce Elliot (Daryls
Ambitious Card Omnibus by Stephen Minch). Briefly, angle-jog the top card with your right thumb, so
that you can contact the outer left corner with the left first finger. Pull down firmly with the first
finger, causing the card to revolve around the front of the deck and end face-up underneath.
At the same exact time, flip the packet in the left hand over, so that it lands in dealing grip, with two
aces visible.

Cleanup

Drop the out-jogged ace in the right hand onto the table, or into a spectators hand. Then, thumb off
the ace on top of the right-hand packet onto the other ace. Bring the hands together and pull the
double out-jogged from the left half onto the right half, and then thumb the ace to the table. Finish by
dealing the ace on top of the left-hand packet onto the other aces. For a flashy finish flip the left-hand
half face-down, as you flip the right-hand half onto the packet in the left hand using Paul Harriss
Instant Replay flourish (Close-Up Kinda Guy and Art of Astonishment Vol. 3, both by Paul Harris).

Thoughts

The flipping of the packet in the left hand can be done a couple of different ways. You can give it a
slight hop, in a manner similar to that used in Looy Simonoffs Flippant (Apocalypse, Vol. 1 No. 9 by
Harry Lorayne). You can also use the T.G. Murphy Deck Flip.

Stick 4

by Nathan Kranzo
For this beautiful production you need to prepare one card. The preparation is a small
piece of double stick tape on the back of one of the aces (or whatever 4 of a kind you
would like to produce). The actual size of the piece is up to you really. I use about a
half an inch piece stuck right in the center running up and down lengthwise.
Alternately repositionable glue will work too.
Once the tape is in place, use your fingers to take away some of the stickiness by
pressing them onto the tape over and over. The set up is very easy to get into.
Ill describe an easy way to get into it at the end of the production sequence. D.S. will
stand for double stick in the description. Place the D.S. ace face up on the
bottom of the facedown deck. The other three aces are face up in the 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4
th positions from the top, with a face down cover card on top. I usually
dribble the cards from hand to hand in this position to imply normalcy. You can do this
if you are careful not flash the reversed card on the bottom, or the ones near
the top. When youre ready, Side Steal the bottom card into the right-hand palm. You
will now cause the palmed ace to appear face up on top of the deck. You
can use any method. I use one of Jose De La Torres wonderful changes (which can be
found in his 1978 book Real Magic). Any change will do. Only in this
case its a production and not a change.

Alternate Beginning Sequence

As you saw in the demo I performed a multiple packet cut and then produced the first
card with my thumb. This is a self working version of the cool flourish usually
associated with Daryl's fantastic Snowshoe Sandwhich effect. This version is so easy
as all you have to do is push your thumb down on the back of the top face down
prepeared card and when you lift your thumb it sticks! So rather than start with the
first ace reversed on the bottom you can start with it face down on top. At this point
just perform any false cut and then produce the top card with the thumb as mentioned.
After the ace appears thumb it off, being careful not to let the tape stick to the cover
card. Take the ace face up in your right hand and give it a spin (as per the Whirl
Flourish from Racherbaumers Card Finesse 2 [1992]), or a flick to show its
singleness. Flip the ace face down onto the deck and immediately flip it face up again.
Snap your right fingers, while at the same time pressing down with your left thumb.
This will ensure the tape adheres to the face down cover card. Immediately spread the
aces to reveal all four. To clean up, take two aces in each hand and spread
them back and forth to display their singleness as per the Stencel/Ascanio Circular
Subtlety. This is done with the deck in a Deep Mechanics Grip; which effectively frees
the left fingers to perform the spreading action. Square all the aces into the right
fingertips allowing the double card to go on top. Rotate your right hand palm down and
flash the back of the ace packet. Rotate your hand back palm up and pull the double
card onto the deck with your left thumb. Continue this sequence until all four aces end
up face up on top. If you dribble the cards it will cause the tape to disengage.
