Haddonfield hosts first Pet-a-Palooza

adoption event in downtown March 21
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield is going to the
dogs on Saturday, March 21, but
in the best way possible.
Downtown Haddonfield will
celebrate all four legged-friends
with pet-related promotions,
adoption opportunities and petfriendly activities during Haddonfields first ever Pet-a-Palooza
charity event from noon to 4 p.m.
The event will feature an opportunity to adopt a dog and/or cat in
Kings Court from the Camden
County Animal Shelter.
Haddonfield is a very pet
friendly town. A lot of the storeowners have pets that are residents in their stores and
allow pets in stores.

will be so much fun, Partnership

Live music will be performed
throughout the day, and a pet parade will commence at Haddy
Lane beginning at noon. Downtown Haddonfield shop owners
who regularly have their pet mascots present during business
hours will lead the parade. Pet
costumes are welcome to add to
the fun, but are not required for
the parade. Parade participation

FBI asks for publics help

The FBI is asking Haddonfield
residents to help with an investigation on a stolen original Norman Rockwell painting called
Lazybones (Boy Asleep with
Hoe) that was featured on the
cover of the Saturday Evening
Post on Sept. 6, 1919.
The painting was stolen from
Robert and Teresa Grants Cherry Hill home on July 2, 1976. The
Grants have since passed, but
their children still hope to recover the painting.
According to their children,
Robert acquired the painting
from a Haddonfield residents
home between 1952 and 1954. He
was playing pool at the residents
house when he accidently put the
pool cue through the bottom corner. The resident is believed to
have been from the upper class,
owned at least two other Norman
Rockwell paintings and was
known for inviting people over to
play pool.
The FBI is hoping to find out
whom this Haddonfield resident

LAZYBONES
was or relatives who can give
them any lead information.
If anyone knows any information they are asked to contact Bob
Bazin, a retired FBI agent who is
helping with the investigation, at
(609) 933-2042 or email at
[email protected] or the FBIs office in Cherry Hill at (856) 7959556.

ver the last few weeks, you

may have read on this page
our request to have you send
in the story of your marriage proposal. March 20 is National Proposal Day,
and we are celebrating the under-theradar holiday by telling the stories
of marriage engagements of the members of this community.
Why do we do this? As one of our associate editors would say, we love
love.
And so, too, apparently, do plenty of
other New Jerseyans. A recently-released Census report shows that New
Jersey has the lowest percentage of
people who have married two or more
times. So, when we say I do, we tend
to mean it. Or, at the very least, we

dont intend to say it again if things

dont go right the first time.
Wed rather focus on that first point,
though. New Jersey has long held one
of the lowest, if not the lowest, divorce
rates in the nation, and experts are
never surprised to read this. Why? Because New Jersey residents typically
fall into categories that put them at a
lower likelihood to get a divorce:
We have a high level of education,
so we often delay marriage to a later
age, making us more emotionally and

financially stable. Money troubles are

a leading cause of divorce, and since a
good portion of our newlyweds are in
a better financial position than their
counterparts in the South and West
where divorce rates are higher we
tend to avoid the D-word.
Which circles us back to what were
really talking about here wonderful,
head-over-heels love.
We have already received plenty of
stories from the community about
their memorable engagement stories,
and we thank you for them. Your stories will be told in these pages in the
coming weeks. If you want to share
your stories with the town, please
send them in. We love love, all year
round.

The Sun wants to know: How did you get engaged?

Share your stories with our readers for National Proposal Day on March 20
Maybe he popped the question on a picturesque summer day at the beach, a banner plane proclaiming his love flying overhead. Perhaps she organized your family
and friends into a flash mob, asking for
your hand in marriage at the end of an
elaborate song and dance. Or maybe it was
simple, both curled up on the couch at
home, sharing a pizza and laughing over

the latest episode of a favorite sitcom.

March 20 is National Proposal Day, and
no matter how you went from single to betrothed, The Sun wants to celebrate with
your stories.
Was it the most romantic proposal in
history? A proposal that went hysterically
wrong, but still with an enthusiastic yes
at the end? Maybe the third time was the

charm? Whatever your story, were calling

on you to send it in so we can share it with
everyone.
Send in your perfect (or not-so-perfect)
proposal story, and a photo of you and your
special someone, to our news email, which
is listed to the right.
Watch for your stories in an upcoming
issue of The Sun.

Remembering the Haddonfield
Foundation in our wills
We all have activities in Haddonfield we
believe in and support. There are so many
wonderful organizations and activities
here. But what about the future of Haddonfield? What if there are needs we cant see
now?

We know the Haddonfield Foundation

and all it has done for our town. As we
look around the town, there are so many
tremendous things here that the foundation helped to fund when help was needed.
Will it be able to do so in the future?
We have each named the foundation in
our wills because we know it will be there
when there are new dreams to be fulfilled
and new ideas to make the town even bet-

ter for our children and grandchildren.

We hope that as you each think about
our town and its storied history, about the
fun and interesting things we have now,
that you will also think about our future,
and remember the Haddonfield Foundation in your wills, as we have done.

Upgrades coming to Mabel Kay?

Camden County Veterans

Prayer Breakfast
By Freeholder Deputy Director Edward McDonnell

Borough applying for Year 37 Community Development grant

to make improvements at Haddonfield senior citizen center
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Mabel Kay House senior
center might be getting a little bit
of a makeover in the near future.
Haddonfield
commissioners
passed an authorization on
March 10 to apply for a $21,700
grant for improvements to the
Mabel Kay House.
The borough is applying for a
Year 37 Community Development
Block Grant for the improvements. The Federal Community
Development Block Grant program provides the basic funding
necessary to administer the
many housing, public works, economic development and public
service activities, which help to
further the boroughs overall
community development objectives.
This grant will be used to have
the molding on the outside

worked on and the building

scraped and painted, according to
borough clerk Deanna Bennett.
The Mabel Kay House will have to
have the whole house scraped and
repainted. These improvements
are estimated in the amount of
$21,700.
In other news:
Commissioners also approved
appointments to the Recreation
Commission. Those on the commission include Bob Bickel,
recreation director; Jack OMalley, mayors designee; Commissioner John Moscatelli; Lefteris
Banos, public schools athletic director; and many others involved
in various sports as well as previous mayor Tish Colombi.
Commissioners unanimously
approved three ordinances on second reading. The first was a bond
ordinance for library improvements. This ordinance calls for
supplemental appropriation, or

an increase of $400,000 for the improvements, and will authorize

the issuance of $380,000 in bonds
or notes to cover part of the cost.
This increases the estimated cost
of the improvements from $1.8
million to $2.2 million.
The second ordinance calls for
the replacement of yield signs at
the intersection of Redman Avenue and Barberry Lane to stop
signs to help control the speeds in
that area by slowing the traffic
and making for a safer commute
for those going to the Elizabeth
Haddon Elementary School.
The final ordinance amends
the borough code to create a new
chapter, entitled Permit for Commercial Filming, that will allow
the borough to enforce and collect
a permit and fee for commercial
filming.
The next commissioners meeting is Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30
p.m. in Borough Hall.

My favorite date, Valdemar,

whom I had met in October of the
previous year, and I had gone iceskating in mid-January on the
flooded pond at Cooper River
Park in Pennsauken. While sitting on a bench removing our ice
skates and talking about France,
he asked me if I wanted to go to
France with him. He said that Air
France was having a special on
airfares for couples, but they had
to have the same last names. I
said that we didnt; he said we
could. I said that it was an idea,
but wondered what he really
meant.
Later that month, he took me to
dinner for my birthday at Braddocks Tavern in Medford. In a romantic, candlelit dining room, we
were seated next to a roaring fireplace. He ordered a carafe of

HARRIET AND VALDEMAR MONSHAW

wine. I was surprised; he usually
ordered only a half carafe. After
consuming most of the wine, he
asked me when Id like to go shopping for an engagement ring. I

reply, but didnt refuse. Playing
for time, I said how about on your
birthday in April. He said that he
would like it to be sooner, but
agreed. I was unsure.
While making up my mind, I
thought about that proverbial
dress in a shop that is perfect for
you, but youre undecided
whether to buy it or not. You leave
the shop without the dress, but return to the shop two weeks later
and its gone. Someone else had
snapped it up.
We were engaged on his birthday in April. Unlike our normal,
cautious natures, we were married in August. We had a magical
honeymoon in Nice, France, and
Venice, Italy.
I had been proposed to a few
times prior to this, but this was
the most romantic and clever he
knew how to reel me in but then
I liked him very much; we had
similar interests and backgrounds. I knew if I had delayed
too long, he would find someone
else.
I had a commemorative tree
planted in front of 208 Kings
Highway East. The inscription
reads: Val and Harriet Monshaw,
An exceptional man; a most fortunate woman.

A romance at Georgetown Law

By ILISE L. FEITSHANS
Special to The Sun

Most people in Haddonfield

never met the father of Jay Levy
Feitshans JD, class of 2005
HMHS, and of Emalyn Levy Feitshans,
Haddonfield
Friends
School and Friends Select School
class of 2009. So they might be
quite surprised to know that Ted
and Ilise Feitshans marriage
story was very romantic!
The couple met in the most unlikely and un-romantic of places,
Georgetown Law School. A colleague of the future groom met
the future bride and instantly
pronounced as he introduced
them to each other, "you're perfect
for each other," but in typical future-lawyer fashion dutifully
added, "but I have no liability for
any future consequences." Ilise
was headed for a career in international public health law and
had lined up an internship in the
United Nations in Geneva,
Switzerland. Marriage was the
farthest priority from her plan,
but her childrens future father
had other plans on mind. He took
off from his job on the staff of the
Secretary of Agriculture in the
USDA in Washington, D.C., and
flew to Paris, France where he
proposed at the Louvre museum,
at dinner along the Quai Voltaire
and at the Rodin Museum. In fact,
he proposed everywhere non-stop
for an entire week, insisting, "I
want you to have my children!"

Special to The Sun

The couples official

engagement announcement as it appeared in the
Georgetown
Law Weekly.

When Ilise remained unpersuaded, he wrote her letters that

arrived at her office in Switzerland every working day! Simple
notes stating that it was time for
breakfast and that they should be
breakfasting together, not alone.
The internship ended, Ilise went
home to Washington, D.C., and
the couple was engaged. As noted
in the Georgetown Law Weekly
article with their official engagement picture, the couple married
at the Plaza Hotel in the brides
hometown New York City. The
tall, blonde law student and suitor
had won his first case!

is open to the general public. Interested pet owners are asked to
register at www.downtownhaddonfield.com/events/pet-paloozaparade-registration/, or at Ahead
of the Pack, located at 207 Kings
Highway East.
Some downtown Haddonfield
shops and eateries will donate a
percentage of their proceeds
made during Pet-a-Palooza to the
CCAS, so everyone is invited to
pack up their pooches, start their
spring shopping and contribute
to a charitable cause. A list of
stores donating to the shelter can
be found at the downtown Haddonfield website.
A lot of the stores are donating a portion of their days profits, and it is voluntary.
When someone makes a purchase in the store, a portion of
the proceeds will go to the animal
shelter, Gold said.
Founded by the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders
in 1997, the CCAS has been fighting to reduce the overwhelming
stray/unwanted animal population in the county. CCAS is an
open admissions shelter and
takes in more than 6,000 companion animals from 17 municipalities in Camden County every
year. CCAS provides Camden
County with low-cost spay and
neutering options. By providing
the service at such a low cost,

CCAS hopes to reduce the number of stray/unwanted animals

in the county.
The day will be so much fun.
Most people, I would say, love animals, and it is for a great cause.
This event primarily is to give
back to the animal shelter, our
furry friends and ultimately have
a fun community event, Gold
said.
If you dont make a purchase at
a downtown shop but still want to
donate to the CCAS, you can do so

at the Kings Court adoption

booth, or bring pet items such as
sheets, blankets, towels, beds,
food and toys to designated stores,
which can be found at DowntownHaddonfield.com.
In the event of rain, Pet-aPalooza will take place Sunday,
March 22 from noon to 4 p.m.
Come and enjoy the town,
bring your pet, walk around see
the town, stores and friends, and
enjoy the fabulous downtown that
weve created, Gold said.

The Bistro at Haddonfield during
Pet-a-Palooza on March 21. All
money raised from these local
artists work will go toward Paw
It 4ward, which will use the
money to offset the exorbitant
medical bills of local animal res-

cues.
With Pet-a-Palooza being on
March 21, we thought this would
be a great way to raise money to
help animals as well as spread
awareness, Azita Kay, president
and founder of Paw It 4ward,
said.
Kay and Denise Sellers of Haddonfield Child Care arranged for
Paw It 4ward to come to some of
the local after-school programs to
raise awareness of rescue animals and animal welfare with

some of the children but in a fun

way. Kids got to decorate boneshaped cookies, create dog toys
and paint canvases. They were
also visited by some rescue dogs
during their visit.
The twinkle in the eyes of the
kids, you can see how happy they
were with the animals there. Animals do make a difference in your
life; they can be very therapeutic.
And the kids were just so happy
that day, Kay said about the
Tatem Elementary after-school
program visit.
Both women wanted to find a
way for the organization to raise
funds while getting the children
involved, when Sellers thought of
selling the painted canvases at
Pet-a-Palooza.
We were thinking about what
would be a great way to fundraise
that is fun and interactive. We
thought this was a great way for
them to be creative and help out
as well. Haddonfield is such an
amazing town, and parents wanted to be involved. Pet-a-Palooza
just made sense. We are raising
awareness and keeping everything we did in town as well, Kay
said.
The art is mostly painted on an
8-by-10 inch canvas, with a few 5by-7 inch ones, all by local kids.
All paintings include animals or
the rescue of animals in some
way.
Some of them are just amazing. It is so heart warming to see
all of the effort they put into
them, Kay said.
The canvases will be on display
at The Bistro at Haddonfield during Pet-a-Palooza, as well as the
week after. The Bistro will be
hanging the artwork inside, along
the windows so they can get attention from everyone walking
down the street.
The Bistro is so dog-friendly;
it is really, really nice of them to
do the display. Theyre really
going above and beyond to make
sure it will be a success, Kay
said.
Paw It 4ward will be asking for
a $20 donation for each work of
art, but of course buyers can donate any amount. All money
raised will go toward the medical
fund that benefits local rescues.
