ABSTRACT
Absorption column is one of the separation techniques that involve liquid and vapor.
One or more component of a gas mixture can be separated when a certain liquid
flow through it counter-currently. The liquid absorbs the components and mass
transfer process which separates the components from gas mixture occurs. Packed
material is used to increase the contact surface area in absorption process which
enhances the efficiency and shortens the duration of the process.
Gas absorption is a an example of a topic which does not fall entirely within the
province of either the chemist or engineer because it requires the simultaneous
consideration of molecular diffusion, fluid mechanics and chemical reaction kinetics.
Therefore the main purpose of this experiment is to study gas absorption in
absorption column, determine the effect of air flow rate and water flow rate on
flooding point in an absorption column and explain the relationship between water
and air flow rate changes and their effect on pressure drop of an absorption column.
The general procedure of this experiment was started by make sure the valves for
right column are opened. Secondly, the water flow rate was set at 2.5 L/min air flow
rate at 100L/min and leaved for 5 minutes. The data for pressure drop was taking
every 5 minutes. This step was repeating by increasing air flow rate by 10L/min until
the flooding point was observed. The next step, repeated the same step by
maintaining the air flow rate at 100L/min and the water flow rate was adjusted by 2,

2.5, 3, 3.5 L/min.The experiment was stopped when the flooding point started to
occur at the top of absorption colum
From the result comparison, it showed that the higher the flow rates of water the
higher the pressure drop. As we kept increased the flow rate, the pressure needs
the air to overcome the water flowing from the top. For the air flow rate, it also
showed that the higher the air flow rate, the higher the pressure drop. This is
because the water fills up the absorption column and there is reduce in the space
for air flow. The flooding point decreases with the increases of the water flow rate
which indicates that the faster the water flow rate, the lesser the flooding point.
As a conclusion, the highest water flow rate to achieve the flooding point was at
130 L/min and for the air flow rate was at 3.5 L/min. The flooding point decreases
when the flow rate decreases. This proves that the theory is similar with the
outcome of this experiment.
