Americas Newest
U.S. Eagle Silver Dollar
This is a newest release of one of the
most beautiful silver coins in the world.
Today you have the opportunity to secure
these massive, hefty one full Troy ounce
U.S. Silver Dollars in stunning Brilliant
Uncirculated condition. These legal tender
United States Silver Dollars feature a nearly
100-year-old design of Lady Liberty striding
confidently forward while draped in a U.S.
flag, while the other side depicts a majestic
U.S. eagle, thirteen stars, and an American
shield. But the clock is ticking.
Timing is Everything
Our advice? Keep this to yourself. Tear out
the page if you have to, because the more
people who know about this offer, the worse
it is for you. Demand for Silver Eagles in
recent years has shattered records. Experts
predict that 2013 Silver Eagles may break
them all over again. Supplies are limited and
there is a strict limit of 40 per household.

Chevys crosstown rival has a similar curriculum for its high-performance models. Past Shelby and
SVT models ran 12-hour tests designed to mimic the abilities of the average customer, rather than
those of professional drivers. So far, the Ford GT and 2013 Shelby GT500 are the only Blue Oval
products to endure a full 24-hour battery. Fords European RS Team tests its models for 3100 miles
on the Nrburgring and for 1550 miles around Italys high-speed Nardo Ring.

Wings were becoming popular in the 1960s, but the Chaparral 2E did nothing less than
revolutionize automotive aero. It had two movable elements: a giant airfoil on pylons
at the rear and a small element in the nose to balance the large force of the rear wing.
The wing provided huge downforce for corners, but the driver could reduce its angle
of attack for less drag and more speed on straights. The Can-Am series banned
movable aerodynamics, citing safety issues, effectively doubling the size of its
rulebook in the process. Modern Formula 1 cars drag-reduction system is a movable
ap in the rear wing that reduces downforce and drag on straightaways, but it is
governed by strict regulations and no other aero elements may move.

These sources of potential imprecision
are real, but if you want to accurately track
fuel consumption with your trip computer,
you need to calibrate it [see below]. On the

CALIBRATION STATION
On your next long trip, stop next to a mile marker and reset your trip odometer. One hundred or more miles later, stop once again and note how your
odometer compares to the road mileage. Then, at your next ll-up, reset your trip computer and ll
your tank according to this procedure: 1) Fill at the maximum ow rate until the pump clicks off.
2) Wait 10 seconds, then continue lling at the minimum ow rate until the nozzle clicks off again.
3) Repeat this procedure two more times. Ideally, you should do this using the same pump at the same
station. Even with a calibrated odometer, a single ll-up has too many variables for an accurate calculation. But if you log at least three lls like this, you should have sufcient data to divide your correctedodometer miles by the indicated pump gallons to obtain an accurate mpg. Compare that mpg gure
to what the trip computer reports and youll have your correction factor.

Acura MDX
Quicker, quieter, more fuel ecient. Mushy
and indistinct exterior styling. by Je Sabatini
TESTED
ike a jack-o-lantern
in mid-November, the
2014 Acura MDX looks
softer and lumpier than
the ute it replaces. Less
menacing, too, its dual
exhausts having been
castrated in the redesign. But Acura assures us this third generation of its three-row SUV doesnt concede
anything to models previous. In fact, the
new one allegedly laps the Nrburgring
eight seconds faster than its predecessor.
Touch!
Clich, too. While nobody from Acura
would divulge an actual lap time, we hit 60
miles per hour in 6.4 seconds and ran the
quarter in 14.9 seconds. Thats two-tenths
quicker in both measures, despite the new
models smaller-displacement V-6. Rated at
290 horsepower, the 3.5-liter V-6 is down 10
horsepower compared with last years engine
but now employs direct injection and cylinder deactivation. Thats good for a 3-mpg gain
in EPA combined mileage. We averaged 19
mpg overall, a 2-mpg improvement over the
MDX we tested in 2010.

We miss the

brawnier look.
But the new

lighter, and more

a bad trade-off.

Instead of cramming a V-8 into its new CTS
mid-size sports sedan, Cadillac tooled up
a twin-turbo version of its 3.6-liter DOHC
V-6. A new aluminum block is fortied with
six-bolt cast-iron main bearing caps and a
structural oil pan. Each turbo bolts directly
to an aluminum head cast integrally with an
exhaust manifold, and dual intercoolers live on
top of the heads. Variable intake- and exhaustvalve timing and direct injection carry over.
Peak output is 420 horsepower at 5750 rpm
and 430 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm,
gains of 99 horses and 155 pound-feet over
GMs naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6.

and a new safety-tech suite matches those of
the luxury leaders. And, yes, Shaq still ts.
Regal: A new 2.0-liter turbo fourcylinder engine raises maximum
horsepower from 220 to 259 and peak
torque from 260 to 295 pound-feet.
Balance-shaft changes and various
structural upgrades improve smoothness.
Both the base Regal and the Regal GS now
offer four-wheel drive. Like the LaCrosse,
the Regal gets LED lighting, an updated
interior, and a raft of new tech features.
Unlike the LaCrosse, its basically an Opel.

ELR: Yes, this is essentially a reskinned

suspension has been worked over with bits
from GMs Opel subsidiary. Weight is a
frightening 4070 pounds; range is limited to

Camaro: The new Z/28 is more
expensive than the more powerful ZL1 but
proves its worth with track paraphernalia
such as standard carbon-ceramic brakes,
air-conditioning delete, and a radio that plays
through a single speaker to save weight. The
C6 Corvette Z06s naturally aspirated 7.0liter V-8 provides at least 500 horsepower,
and an aero package produces big downforce
at triple-digit speeds. All Camaros, except the
ZL1, receive a face lift with softer lines and
single-lens taillights.
Caprice PPV: Updates for 2014 add
things cops like, including a columnmounted shifter and a surveillance mode to

entley is soft on China. To differentiate the former Continental Flying Spur, now
known simply as the Flying
Spur, from the two-door Continental GT, Bentley softened the sedans
suspension. This move was also intended to
broaden the Spurs appeal among its likely
customers in emerging markets such as
China, where we drove it.
The Flying Spur hasnt gone completely
pillowy. On the spectacular road that climbs
from Beijing to the Great Wall, the Spur
acquitted itself nicely.
Nowadays, the Wall is perhaps less useful for keeping out foreign invaders than
keeping in Chinese drivers, who have, on
average, about 17 minutes worth of experience. Incidentally, Westerners can now buy
a drivers license at the airport.
What better place to drive a barge with a
6.0-liter W-12 making 616 horsepower and
590 pound-feet, then? Thats the same
power as the Continentals uplevel GT Speed
model. Like the Conti, the Spur sees its sixspeed automatic replaced by ZFs eight-ratio
box, and it adopts a rearward power-distribution bias, sending 60 percent of the power
aft in normal conditions.

In sync with the launch of the
Corvettes seventh generation,
supplier Tremec found a way to
cram a seventh gear inside the
Stingrays manual transaxle,
adding only 8.8 pounds and 1.7
inches of length. Two distinct
gearsets for the TR-6070
provide wider ratio spacing
for base Corvettes and tighter
spreads with the Z51 option,
both of which favor fuel
efciency over acceleration.
In fact, the 0.42:1 or 0.48:1
seventh gears, respectively,
are tall enough to propel
this sports car to 300 mph
without exceeding the engines
redline (at least in theory).

GMC
Canyon replacement: An all-new
mid-size pickup is expected in 2014 for the
15 model year. It will debut with both rearand four-wheel-drive with a gas V-6 and
four-cylinder turbo-diesel engines.
Sierra: The Sierra full-size pickup is
all-new this year, just like its Silverado twin.
In both, a trio of direct-injected, aluminumblock Ecotec3 engines debuts with
continuously variable-valve timing and
fuel-saving cylinder deactivation. The
285-hp, 4.3-liter V-6 generates as much
power as last years 4.8-liter V-8 and can
tow up to 7200 pounds, says GMC. At an
EPA-estimated 23 mpg on the highway, the
355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 beats the Ford F-150
EcoBoost turbo V-6s claimed fuel economy.
The top engine offering is the 420-hp,
6.2-liter V-8 available in SLT and Denali
trims that can tow up to 12,000 pounds. An
eight-speed auto is coming, but for now the
Sierra sticks with six speeds. New electric
power steering helps loft fuel economy,
and a mix of hydraulic and shear-type
rubber body mounts helps quell body
shake. The previous extended cab with rearhinged rear doors gets replaced by a new
double-cab model featuring four
conventional doors. Technology upgrades
include an eight-inch touch-screen
infotainment system as well as forwardcollision alert and lane-departure warning
systems. A new All-Terrain 4WD model
features Z71 off-road suspension, Rancho
shocks, underbody shields, hill-descent
control, on-/off-road tires, and an autolocking rear diff.
Yukon: An all-new Yukon and Yukon
Denali based on the new Sierra will be
introduced in 2014 as 2015 models.
Minor trim changes: Acadia, Sierra
HD, Terrain
Unchanged: Savana
Dead: Sierra hybrid, Yukon hybrid

INFINITI Q50
OF 2014 INFINITI
SALES WILL BE
Q50 SEDANS.
Honda
Accord: Hondas bestseller goes hybrid,
rst with a $40,570 plug-in already on sale,
then with a more conventional gasolineelectric hybrid that should be signicantly
cheaper while achieving an EPA-combined
rating of 47 mpg. Both burn gas via a 2.0-liter
Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder assisted by an
electric motor. There is no transmission; the
drive ratios between the engine, motor, and
wheels are xed [see Tech Tidbit].
Fit: An all-new 2015 Fit, including a
sedan, will appear in 2014. The rough
dimensions will stay stat, but were told to
expect updated interior electronics, a quieter
cabin, and improved fuel economy. Itll also
get Hondas automatic self-braking system,
called Honda City Brake Active.
Odyssey: A mid-cycle refresh to
Hondas minivan includes new sheetmetal
and additional safety items such as lanedeparture warning and forward-crash
warning, plus this years most talked-about
auto-show debut, the HondaVAC, an optional
onboard vacuum cleaner.
Urban SUV: Following the concept
reveal at this years Detroit auto show, the
as-yet unnamed Fit-based crossover will
debut in 2014. Shorter and lighter than the
CR-V, this ve-door vehicle will feature
Hondas at-folding and ipping seats and an
engine sized to make the oil sheiks quake.
Hyundai
Equus: The agship gets new 19-inch
wheels and LED fog lights, plus revisions to
the grille, front bumper, and rearview mirrors.
A redesigned dash, instrument panel, center
stack, and console keep it fresh inside. Sadly,
the optional seat massagers and refrigerator
are gone, their absence barely compensated
for by two 9.2-inch monitors where
previously there was but one.
Genesis coupe: Rumors persist that a
new powertrain conguration will take over
for the current 2.0-turbo/manualtransmission combo.
Sonata: All three trimsGLS, SE, and
Limitedget a new grille, rear bumper insert,
vehicle-stability management, driverselectable steering modes, and a one-inchlarger nav screen.
Veloster: The base model gets
daytime running lights and a rearview
camera, and the Turbo gets brake-actuated
torque vectoring and an engine-sound
generator.

QX60: This was the threerow crossover once known as the JX. An
all-new hybrid version debuts.
QX70: This was the FX37 and FX50,
both of which will be called the QX70.
QX80: The eight-passenger SUV
dumps QX56 for the manlier QX80 tag. For
added safety, moving-object detection will
automatically trigger the rearview camera.
Q50: The Q50 replaces the outgoing
G37 sports sedan and wears all-new
sheetmetal. Power is from either Innitis
familiar 328-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 or a new hybrid
system. Each is mated to a seven-speed
automatic. Word is that a Mercedesdesigned turbocharged four-cylinder may
appear soon.
Q60: Innitis carry-over G coupe
(there will be an IPL version!) and
convertible now share this alphanumeric.
Q70: The current M37 and M56 sedans
will be grouped together under this moniker,
the engine displacement called out by
secondary badges.
Jaguar
F-type: see test, page 68
XFR-S: Jaguar installs the 550-hp V-8
from last years XKR-S into the new XFR-S to
more closely match the horsepower offered
by the BMW M5 and Benz E63 AMG. Tweaks
to the suspension and aerodynamics help
cope with the extra power. Only 100 of these
$99,895 supersedans will be imported.
XJR: The most powerful version of the
big XJ sedan, the XJR comes with the 550hp V-8. Altered suspension and transmission
settings handle the extra power. Regularlength versions start at $116,895; the longer
XJR-L opens at $119,895.
XKR-S GT: Fitted with carbon-ceramic
brakes, a tied-down suspension, and
downforce-generating rear wing and dive
planes, the 550-hp XKR-S GT delves even
further into the super-GT realm than last
years XKR-S. Just 25 of the $174,895
coupes will make it to the U.S. this year.

Cherokee: This beloved
nameplate returns for 2014,
eschewing its right angles and
double live axles for a sleek
unibody structure and all-independent
suspenders adapted from the Alfa Giulietta
based Dodge Dart. The modern styling may
be an affront to what many purists expect of
the rough-and-tough Cherokee badge, with a
funky headlight arrangement and a unique
take on Jeeps seven-slot grille that ows up
over the hood. But all that should make it a
cinch to spot in a parking lot full of Ford
Escapes and Honda CR-Vs. Engine choices
include a 184-hp, 2.4-liter four and a 271-hp,
3.2-liter Pentastar V-6, both backed by
Chryslers rst use of ZFs new nine-speed

the transmission lineup.
Grand Cherokee: A refresh in mid2013 brought redesigned front and rear
fascias, along with new technology and

is now standard across all models, including
the 470-hp SRT, and an EcoDiesel version is
powered by a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 [see

NINE TIMES
The worlds rst nine-speed automatic transaxle,
the 9HP from ZF, has four planetary gearsets and
six shifting elements nested together so compactly
that this gearbox ts transversely between the front
wheels. A 9.8:1 spread between rst and ninth gears
is a boon to fuel efciency and quiet highway cruising.
An optional four-wheel-drive power takeoff can be
decoupled on demand, and stop-start capability
is standard. The 9HP is adaptable to hybrids by
replacing the torque converter with an electric motor.
It will rst appear in the Jeep Cherokee and the Land
Rover Range Rover Evoque.
Cadenza: New for 2014, the frontwheel-drive Cadenza is Kias version of the
Hyundai Azera. Larger than the mid-size
Optima, it offers a bevy of optional luxury
features and driver aids. Power comes from a
293-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 backed by a six-speed
automatic.
Forte/Koup/5-door: The Forte
sedan and 5-door receive a wholesale update,
with a new, larger chassis; revised styling;
additional luxury features; and more power.
Four-cylinder engines now include a 148-hp
1.8-liter and a 173-hp 2.0-liter. The largely
carry-over Koup gains a 201-hp, 1.6-liter turbo
in addition to the base 2.0, along with new
styling and equipment updates.
Optima hybrid: Kia labels its updated
Optima hybrid a 2013 model; the late-cycle
changes include a stronger electric motor
and a new lithium-ion battery that, along with
other tweaks, increase EPA mileage ratings to
36 city, 40 highway from 34 and 39,
respectively. Combined output is down from
077
206 horsepower to 199, but torque climbs
from 195 pound-feet to 235. A base LX model
also joins the carry-over EX trim, with all
versions gaining a bit more trunk space from
the repackaged battery.
Sorento: Although similar in
appearance to the previous model, the 2014
Sorento features a new chassis with revised
front and rear suspensions, as well as new
four- and six-cylinder engines packing up to
290 horsepower. A six-speed automatic is
standard on both front- and four-wheeldrive versions. Higher-quality materials now
grace the interior.
Soul: Kias hamster-schlepping success
story goes into its second generation, adding
more-aggressive styling cues and sportier
underpinnings. Kia retuned the Souls 1.6and 2.0-liter fours for better low-rpm torque;
the six-speed manual and automatic
gearboxes carry over. A redesigned and
slightly larger cabin is lled with nicer
materials.

MKC: Based on the Ford Escape
compact crossover and slotting below the

from the Escape. A six-speed

four-wheel-drive variants are
expected.

The 2.2-liter Skyactiv turbo-diesel arriving in
the 2014 Mazda 6 sedan is not your typical
oil-burner. A 14.0:1 compression ratiolower
than any other diesel on the marketenables
lighter construction and reduced NOx
emissions. The new design is 10 percent
lighter than Mazdas previous diesel, frictional
losses are lower, and the redline is a relatively
high (for diesels) 5200 rpm. A small turbo
boosts torque below 2000 rpm, then a larger
one sustains manifold pressure through the
rest of the operating range. Counter-rotating
balance shafts quell the shakes.
Mazda
CX-5: New last year, the CX-5
addressed its underwhelming power, our
biggest complaint, with an optional 184-hp,
2.5-liter inline-four. The 155-hp 2.0-liter
remains the base engine.
3: An all-new, third-generation 3 goes
on sale this fall. It abandons the current Ford
component set, as well as the big-smile style,
for Mazdas Skyactiv platform and Kodo
design, already in service on the CX-5. The
new car will have a longer wheelbase, more
width, and a slightly lower rooine. Mazda
promises a roomier interior and class-leading
aerodynamics with the help of automatic
grille shutters. The 155-hp, 2.0-liter inlinefour carries over as the base engine, and the
CX-5s 2.5 is optional. Six-speed
transmissions, manual or automatic, route
the torque to the front tires and Mazdas
capacitor-based i-ELOOP energy-recovery
system is optional. Though it isnt a hybrid,
i-ELOOP uses braking energy to charge
capacitors that power the 12-volt system,
removing the parasitic alternator from the
efciency equation as much as possible. The
system is compact and doesnt depend on
extra batteries, so i-ELOOPequipped cars
wont suffer a big weight penalty.
6: Introduced as an early 2014 model,
Mazdas new family sedan already scored a
comparo win over the Honda Accord. Before
the model year wraps, a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel
[see Tech Tidbit] becomes a second engine
option, and Mazdas i-ELOOP hits showrooms
coupled to the base 2.5-liter.

make the fastest roadgoing track car, the P1

4.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and
carbon-ber everything else. The
aerodynamic bodyworkdiffusers, splitters,
wings, and apsis capable of 1323 pounds
of downforce at 150 mph, according to
McLaren. Haters will point out that the P1s
twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 shares a basic design
with the 12Cs engine, but they wont tell you
that the engine is roughly 90 percent new,
with a new block and more boost from new
turbochargers. Odds are the car will be
out-of-this-world quick with a sub-10-second
quarter-mile time. Only 375 of these
$1.15 million cars will come off the line in
Woking, so start getting rich now.

Magic Body Control is what Mercedes-Benz calls the rst truly proactive suspension tted to a
production car. It is not magic; its two cameras mounted behind the windshield of the 2014 S-class,
looking roughly 50 feet ahead to spot bumps in the road. After processing that information, an
electronic controller adjusts each wheels damper and hydraulic actuator to minimize body lift, roll,
and pitch. In effect, each wheel steps over the bump without disturbing the cars body. This evolution
of Benzs Active Body Control requires a doubling of processing power, a more potent hydraulic pump,
and continuously adjustable dampers.
Nissan
GT-R: Nissan refuses to let a year pass
without updating the GT-R, so 2014 brings
changes to the front anti-roll bar, frontsuspension geometry, and spring and
damper specs, along with new fuel injectors,
a new oil-pan bafe, and a new premium
interior package. Theres also a two-seat
Track Edition, limited to just 150 cars in the
U.S., with tweaked Bilstein dampers, higher
spring rates, a front spoiler with carbon-ber
air ducts, brake cooling guides, and a carbonber rear spoiler.
Juke: Without the full might of Nissans
performance sub-brand behind it, the Juke
NISMO only claims an extra nine horsepower
and seven pound-feet from its turbocharged
four-banger. Additional mods include
springs that are 10 percent stiffer, 18-inch
wheels, a body kit, and excellent sport seats.
In 2014, Nissan gets serious with a hotter

Toyota
Corolla: The all-new, 11th-generation
Corolla is larger and more feature-laden, but
the biggest break with the decades-old
formula is its angry puss. Perhaps the Corolla
is just pissed that its 1.8-liter four-cylinder is
now saddled with a CVT, though a six-speed

boost highway fuel economy to more than

Redesigned for 2014, but with carry-over

eight-passenger model, and the order sheet
includes lots of new sensor-based safety

Rest in Pieces
can Suzuki Motor Corp. has slipped into
a coma from which recovery is unlikely.
The company leaves behind the personable Kizashi sedan and the spunky SX4,
two pink-cheeked siblings brimming
with potential but now as dead as weekold Hamamatsu tuna. Bereaved relatives
further include a passel of smallish sport
utes that never had a full set of teeth.
.
The Business Plan
Lest We Forget:
Fisker Automotive, age 5.
Cut down in its youth, Fisker Automotive
recently succumbed to an overdose of
navet and random acts of mismanagement. The company will be mourned by
Karma, a $96,895 plug-in hybrid luxury
sedan with plunging resale values, and by
sibling Atlantic, tragically stillborn after
poking its head out of the birth canal and
then thinking better of it.
