When I [Shirley] was younger, my mom would tell me about the remarkable Indira
Gandhi who supported our country, Bangladesh, during our fight for liberation. Growing up, I
realized that just as France was to the United States during the Revolutionary War, India was to
Bangladesh. Without her assistance, I would have been somewhere in East Pakistan with a lack
of knowledge and resources. Dorothy and I, we brainstormed for a leader in the Indian-Arab
region and we wanted to research someone who was scarcely mentioned in our textbooks. We
decided that Nehru-Gandhi was the perfect fit for our tastes, a strong-willed woman that existed
not too long ago.

Since us both decided on creating a website, we immediately began to research every possible
database that has been published on the web such as articles, newspapers, documentaries,
journals, speeches, and more. To further our research, with the intent of wanting to hear Gandhis
leadership through the voices of Indians and non-Indians alike, we set up and conducted several
interviews. After doing that, we both went to the library to check out any and every book that
related to Gandhi in our county libraries. We both attempted to get in touch with the Indian
Embassy as well as Sonia Gandhis office and residence and the Indira Gandhi Memorial
Museum both of which are located in India. Due to the fact that none of them could have been of
assistance, we decided to dig even deeper into the Google search engine and contact Facebook
pages dedicated to Indira Gandhi.

While deciding to participate in National History Day this year, we simultaneously came
to the conclusion of developing a website towards Indira Gandhi. A website was the most ideal
type of project for us both since we both have experience with creating a website for National
History Day due to the fact that we both participated last year. A website is easiest to display a
plethora of information since it is capable of displaying numerous pictures and videos and
different types of multimedia and is easily accessible anywhere with Internet access. In addition,
I [Shirley] have relatively some experience with webpage developing as I have been coding for
nearly six years and am familiar to HTML, CSS, and Java. Therefore, it would have been a grave
mistake of neither of us put our experience to use.

Indira Gandhi effortlessly relates to the theme of Leadership and Legacy because
Gandhi was in fact a political leader of the largest democracy in the world, India. But of course,
that does not necessarily mean that she provided leadership by default. Gandhi at a young age
helped her country to freedom and led it towards democracy and success during her reign with
her reforms and decisions. The topic of legacy is even more germane to Gandhi because those
same judgements led India to where it is today in various aspects of growth; particularly in
politics, economics, and most significantly international recognition.
