Course Description:
1. This course provides concepts of medical-surgical nursing. Health restoration, promotion,
and maintenance needs of the adult patient with more complex health problems are
emphasized. Theoretical principles of patient safety, quality improvement, and holistic
and culturally appropriate nursing care are also emphasized to promote excellence in
patient-centered care. The theory and clinical experiences will help develop the
intermediate nursing student into what is expected for the scope of practice and
professional role of nursing. Successful completion of both the theory and lab
components of the course with a P for clinical and a letter grade of C or higher is
necessary to pass the course.
2. Course Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of Nurs/Nurl 3105, the student will:
1. Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of key concepts related to medical-surgical nursing,
including safety, infusion therapy, gas exchange, metabolism, cardiac output, elimination,
perfusion, and nutrition.
2. Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and intermediate competency in applying
concepts and principles of medical-surgical nursing to the role and responsibilities,
including leadership and delegation, of the registered nurse.
3. Apply compassionate and ethical patient- and family-centered care while communicating
respectfully to individuals coming from socio-culturally diverse backgrounds and
acknowledging the specific values and needs of the adult patient in the acute care setting.
4. Utilize the nursing process and assess the effectiveness of nursing care in meeting the
physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of the adult patient in acute care settings
with alterations in different systems, while considering his or her response to illness and
coping strategies.

Summer 2015
1. A 65-year-old gentleman is complaining of left-sided chest pain for the first time.
Receive him into the emergency department and implement nursing interventions and a
set of orders to rule out myocardial infarction. Give him the ordered drugs to treat the
chest pain. Include his wife in all discussions.
2. An older diabetic woman has chronic high blood sugars and now her kidneys are failing.
Talk to her about what is happening and her options for renal replacement therapy.
3. A 45-year-old woman is admitted with severe right upper quadrant pain. Walk her
through the diagnostic procedure for ruling out cholecystitis and provide pain treatment.
Discuss dietary recommendations with the patient and her husband.
4. A 50-year-old man comes to the emergency department with severe epigastric pain.
Assist him in preparing for a CT scan, talk to him about follow through on typical
pancreatitis orders.
5. A 60-year old man has a history of drinking and substance use. His liver is failing and he
has esophageal varices. He needs a paracentesis. Show how this is done and tell the
patient what is happening. Provide discharge instructions for him after the procedure.
6. An HIV patient has a low T count and an elevated viral load. He currently has a low BMI
and hypoproteinemia. He now requires a CVAD and TPN start-up. Walk him through the
CVAD insertion, preparation, and hanging of the TPN.
7. You are part of an inter-collaborative team in a burn unit. Your patient was brought in
from the field with partial and full-thickness burns. Assess the extent of the burns and
provide treatment to the patient. Explain to the patient what you are doing.

Other experiences: You will need 4 to 8 hours of training at your facilitys computer lab to learn
the electronic health record system. This dates and times have yet to be determined so check your
e-mail daily for announcements and be prepared for flexibility. In addition to your 6 shifts, you
will be assigned additional shifts in other areas of your hospital depending on the facility.

Nurs/nurl 3105 (IEN course)

Summer 2015
There will be a total of 112 clinical hours with 28 hours minimum in lab, 60 hours in hospital
setting, and 24 hours of outside experience. Outside experience could include work with support
groups, hospice visits, shifts in ER, OR, infusion lab, interventional radiology, and dialysis. These
experiences will be arranged with clinical instructor.
Simulation: You will be required to complete 28 hours of skill practice in the simulation center
(this summer will be in skills lab and Guzman 104). You will learn more about 16 common
med/surg skills and the practice/testing process on the first Tuesday class meeting. You may
arrange your 28 hours anyway that works for you. You do not have to attend all Tuesday open lab
sessions. Wed sessions will also be available. Extra hours will be available on request.
Safe Nursing Skills Competency Testing (SNS-CT) You will have a 4-hour test period in the
last week of July. Sign up will occur on May 26th. You must achieve a minimum of 77 points for
each skill in order to pass the class.
Patient Care Reports:
On each of your 6 shifts, you will need to complete a patient care report on one of your assigned
patients. See the template below. These reports must be deemed adequate by your clinical
instructor in order to pass clinical. This means that all necessary information must be there and
that it makes sense. Your instructor might also require additional written work to complete during
the clinical hours during quiet time. This additional work could include a concept map,
pharmacology list, or explanation of labwork. The work that you do will depend on the
arrangement of your clinical site. Because you will have 10-hour shifts, the expectation is that
you can complete your written work during these hours and our instructor can read and provide
feedback on much of this work during clinical hours.
Clinical evaluation: Once you have 4 shifts on your hospital unit, your instructor will provide you
with feedback using the template in this syllabus. You will need to print the evaluation (landscape
version attached on Moodle) and complete a self-eval on the date assigned by your clinical
instructor.

CLINICAL EVALUATION Tool
The Student:
1. Does not meet Standard (DNS): Is not yet effective in assessing, observing, recognizing
patterns and deviations, or seeking information. Takes an unfocused approach to
collecting and organizing data and requires assistance in diagnosing actual or potential
nursing problems, planning interventions, carrying out skills, and evaluating outcomes.
Shows hesitance in communicating and responding to most clinical scenarios.
2. Meets Standards (MS): Captures obvious patterns, collects and interprets a variety of
data, but may overlook some important information. Performs basic assessment,
diagnostic, and clinical skills, but still requires some guidance and direction. Conducts
appropriate follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions. Shows solid
foundation in leadership and communication abilities, though may be disorganized and
hesitant in some aspects of clinical situations.
3. Exceeds Standards (ES): Effectively assesses, seeks information, recognizes obvious
and more subtle patterns and deviations, and plans interventions. Displays confidence and
leadership ability, communicates effectively, and requires guidance only in complicated
cases. Demonstrates proficiency in most nursing skills, and requires minimal prompting
in responding to clinical scenarios Completes timely and effective evaluation of nursing
interventions, and develops and updated plan of care when the need for such
modifications have been recognized.
