School
District
of
Menomonee Falls students
scored above the state average
on the ACT test and just below
the district's all-time high that was
recorded last year.
The ACT is a college prep
test taken by students nationwide in which students are
judged on a 1-36 scale. The
statewide composite score
among 73 percent of the state's
public and private school students (43,738 students) was
22.2, a slight increase from last
year.
Lets celebrate the class of
2015, State Superintendent
Tony Evers said in a statement.
These college-bound students
did a fine job on the ACT assessment, demonstrating their overall
preparedness for the next steps
in their education and careers.
By setting a new course and
administering the ACT to all high
school juniors, were helping
way more students consider further education after high
school.
In Menomonee Falls 316 students (77 percent, of graduating
Falls seniors) took the ACT in
2014-15, earning a composite
score of 23.5. The score was just

below the 23.7 scored by 291

district students in the graduating
class of 2014 who took the test.
We are pleased that the
hard work of our students and
staff is paying off. Along with
our record Advanced Placement
test participation and performance, we continue to raise the
bar
on
education
in
Menomonee Falls, High School
Principal Corey Golla said in a
statement.
Director of Curriculum and
Instruction Gary Kiltz added:
Our teachers have done
tremendous work the last four
years to align assessments and
units with the ACT college and
career readiness standards.
Superintendent
Patricia
Greco indicated the performance on the ACT is linked to key
goals within the district.
"We are deeply committed
to preparing our students for college and their careers. Our parents and students are also showing their dedication to individual
excellence, Greco said in a
statement. We continue to align
our curriculum to the ACT skill
strands for college readiness
and our programs to the highdemand job markets.

Gordon is a handsome boy with a truly

gentle disposition. He was transferred
from Fox Valley Humane Association
due to lack of space. He originally
came to them as a stray. Gordon's
rather calm for his breed and exceptionally gentle and
tolerant. Gordon would do well in a household with children
6 years and up. He is amazing with other dogs, and in fact
single handedly met every puppy we currently have at

Tip of the Week: Interactive Toys. Reduce boredom by giving your pet interactive toys. These toys are fun and

Don't let household

baby hazards surprise you
Becoming a parent can be a wonderful, albeit nervewracking, experience. With so many unknowns before
you, the challenges of raising a child
can seem insurmountable. Yet despite
not having a handbook for raising kids,
parents tend to make it through the
infant and toddler stages of their children's lives with healthy kids in tow.
Although there are many lessons
new parents must learn, none are more
important than keeping a child safe.
The Home SafetyCouncil reports that
more than 2,000 children die each
year as a result of unintentional home
injury. The highest rates are amongbabies under a year old. It's never too
early to make safety a priority. Before
baby arrives, parents can learn about
the things around their house that may
pose a threat to young children and
then make any necessary adjustments
to ensure their homes are safe havens
for youngsters.
Sleep environment
One of the first safety concerns parents will face is the sleeping environment. Infants spend lots of time asleep
in the first monthsof their lives, and how
and where they sleep is important.
The best defense against sudden
infant death syndrome, or SIDS, is to
place infants on their backs when putting them to sleep. Although it's tempting to cover the baby with a fluffy blanket or surround the child with plush toys,
these items increase the risk of impeded
airflow. While the cause of SIDS
remains a topic of debate, many doctors believe it has something to do with
a young child's inability to awaken
when faced with diminished oxygen
levels. Crib bumpers, loose blankets

and pajamas, as well as sleeping on his

or her stomach, can increase a baby's
risk for SIDS.
Falls
Even a very young child may be
able to squirm onto and eventually fall
from an elevated surface. Children
should never be left unattended on any
high surface, such as a changing table
or counter.
Failure to use an adequate number
of baby gates can lead to unnecessary
falls as well. While the top of the stairs
may be blocked off, the bottom of the
stairs should be, too.
Adust crib heights accordingly so
that a child cannot climb and fall out of
the crib. Also, avoid using baby walkers, which increase the risk of falls.
Another type of fall that parents
should be aware of does not involve the
child actually falling, but heavy items
falling on thebaby. According to a new
study, in the United States a child is
rushed to a hospital emergency room
every 45 minutes with an injury that's
related to a falling television. Other children are injured or killed when a heavy
piece of furniture falls on them. Always
use brackets to secure TVs and furniture
to walls. Children between the ages of
two and five are the most likely to be
hurt by a falling object.
Drowning
Children splashing in water can be
a fun sight to behold. But the same
water that provides hours of fun can be
quite a hazard. It takes mere inches of
water to drown a child who cannot lift
his or her head out of the water.
Children have drowned in toilets, buckets of cleaning water, tubs, and sinks.

Keep your little ones safe

Never leave a child unattended in or
around water -- even for a second. This
is the best way to prevent a water-related tragedy.
Cleaning agents
Medicines may be kept out of reach,
but household cleaners must also be
inaccessible to children. Use cabinet
locks to prevent curious little hands from
gaining access to potentially harmful
cleaners.
Although parents may lock their cabinets, they may not impede access to the
dishwasher. A dishwasher is a hidden
hazard. Dishwashers provide children

access to potentially caustic detergent

and other chemicals, and kids can be
injured by sharp knives and breakable
glass inside the dishwasher. When your
work in the kitchen is done for the night,
use gates to prevent curious kids from
wandering into the area.
Hand-me downs
In an effort to save money, many
parents will accept hand-me-down items
from well-meaning relatives. Used toys
or babyequipment may not conform to
current safety guidelines. Some may be
missing parts or have been part of a
past recall. Inspect all secondhand

Falls district approves

standards notice
The Menomonee Falls School Board
approved the notice of Student Academic
Standards Aug. 24.
Under a provision of the Act 55
Budget Bill that was approved by the state
Legislature over the summer, school districts have to notify parents and guardians
of the standards in place for the coming
school year. The provision of the state law
requires the notice to be approved by the
board at the first board meeting of the
school year.
Gary Kiltz, director of curriculum and
learning, said that in September 2014 the
board approved a position statement on
district academic standards, aligning them
to the College and Career Readiness
Standards with the ACT.
"Through the conversation we had at
the last board meeting it seemed as
though the board was comfortable with
that as the statement regarding our notification," Kiltz said.
The notice states the district "is committed to using benchmarked and rigorous
standards that set the highest expectations
for student performance and prepare students in the district for success in college

and career development. In order to

align expectations for students with key
external assessments used for entrance
into college and preparation for viable
career pathways (examples include SAT,
ACT), the School Board is committed to
supporting the College and Career
Readiness standards for reading, math,
science, and language arts and corresponding standards in other content areas
that align skills and concepts with the
deep understanding required through the
College and Career Readiness standards
developed by ACT."
The notice further states that the board
"realizes the importance of community values and positioning students competitively
for the global employment market. The
Board reviews and approves standards in
various areas with the goal of setting high
expectations that leverage students for
success beyond high school. Primary
instructional materials are reviewed and
approved by the Board."
The notice is posted on the district
Web site.

Fund balance basics

explained during meeting
A summary of what fund balance is
and how it is used by was provided by
School District of Menomonee Falls
Director of Business Services Jeff Gross
during the Aug. 24 board meeting.
The board approved several policies at
the meeting. Gross indicated there were no
revisions since the board last reviewed the
item two week earlier. Gross explained
that general fund balance "is the amount
by which the assets exceed the liabilities,
it's not the cash on hand. It provides adequate working capital for minimizing short
term borrowing, it functions as a safeguard
for unanticipated expenses and demonstrates fiscal responsibility to bond agencies when they're giving us credit ratings."

Under the district policy, the School

Board aims to have a general fund balance of 12 percent.
"When the fund balance is less than
twelve percent (12%), the Board shall, in
budget preparation, add one-quarter percent (0.25%) per year to the general fund
balance until the twelve percent (12%) minimum goal is achieved. This systematic
growth will be evaluated through the yearend unaudited financial review. Through
this build up plan, the District will reach
and maintain its twelve percent (12%) fund
balance commitment," the policy states.

Paws in the Park set for Sept. 12

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
The Washington County Humane
Societys yearly community-favorite event
Paws in the Park (formerly called Walk for
the Animals) will be held at Jackson Park in
the village of Jackson Sept. 12.
All animal lovers, with or without a pet,
are invited to participate in the 1.5- or 2.5mile walk which has been revamped this
year, said WCHS community relations
coordinator Debbie Block.
"Were mixing it up quite a bit and it is
going to be so much fun," she said. "There
will be live music by Vinyl Road, plenty of
food, lots of vendors. It will be a great
time."
The events new logo, which uses a
paw for the "A" in "Paws," came from a
University of Waukesha student who won
a Humane Society contest. Part of the
motivation behind the name change,
Block said, was to bring a new energy to
the walk and garner more attention for
the cause.
"This walk supports our mission at the
Humane Society," she said. "It aids our programs and helps us continue educating
children which is something we do a lot
of."
Block explained how most people
dont realize how involved the Humane
Society is in informing area children,
through school programs and tours, about
the responsibility of a pet.
"We talk about what makes a good
pet, how to care for animals, what its like
to have a career in the animal field," she
said. "This event really supports that."

While dogs are the most commonly

featured four-legged participants, the event
draws a whole array of beloved creatures.
"Rabbits, turtles, cats, you name it,"
said Block. "If I wasnt working the event I
would bring my own reptiles. It gets a little
crazy, but its fun."
The event is open to individuals, families and corporate teams. There are four
levels of sponsorship for those who want to
raise funds--Bronze Paw ($100); Silver Paw
($300); Gold Paw ($500); and Platinum
Paw ($750). The top adult in pledges will
receive a $200 Visa gift card and the second place adult will get $100. Prizes will
be awarded to third, fourth and fifth places
as well. There will also be youth pledge
opportunities. The first place youth will win
a Tablet and second place a $50 gift card.
To qualify for the top two slots, adults must
raise a minimum of $400 and youth a minimum of $200. After the walk, the shelter
will honor the top walkers who brought in
the most pledges.
Registration fees for the event by Sept.
5 are $15 for students 12 and under ($20
the day of event); $25 for individuals
($30); $50 for a family of four ($60), $10
for additional family member; and $75 for
a corporate team ($90), $10 for additional team member. Fees include one T-shirt
per participant and a goodie bag. All animals will receive a bandana.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the
walk starts at 10 a.m. Water will be provided along both routes.
For more information, one can call
Block at (262) 677-4388 or email
[email protected].

CREATIONS LABOR DAY REST,

AND THE REST OF THE STORY OF MANKINDS REDEMPTION.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. He spoke the universe into existence by His
Word(Jesus). In 6 days, God created all Plant Life, all Fish, all Land Animals, and God said Let
Us(Father, Son and Holy Ghost) make man after OUR image and after OUR likeness. And on the 7th
day God rested. And God wants you to find rest for your soul. Because the first man, Adam sinned and
the second Adam is the Lord Jesus Christ, the God/Man, the Son of God who was sent from heaven to
redeem you back to the Father from Satan, and forgive you of your sins, and, actually quicken/regenerate your spirit, which makes you alive to God, and you become His son or daughter.

News & Events Around the village and county

Sheridan named Director of
Communications for Falls district
Megan Sheridan has been named the
Director of Communications and Community
Outreach/Assistant to the Superintendent for
the School District of Menomonee Falls.
Sheridan is a former award-winning journalist, having worked at daily and weekly newspapers in Oshkosh, Beaver Dam and
Columbus as a photographer, reporter and
editor. She is coming from her most recent
position as a communications specialist and
copywriter at an advertising agency in
Madison. She brings with her a breadth of
knowledge in storytelling, social media,
graphic design and video production. She
has a bachelors degree in Visual Journalism
from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
I am pleased to welcome Megan to the
District, said Superintendent Dr. Patricia
Fagan Greco. She is a creative problem
solver that will bring social media savvy, a
passion for service and dedication to communicating with others to the position.
Sheridan is replacing Mitch Maersch
who will continue to participate in district
event coverage in a freelance capacity.
Maersch has served the district for nearly
four years as a public information coordinator, covering sporting events, handling media
relations and managing website content.
Sheridan will be responsible for developing
relationships within the district and the community, developing communication and
engagement plans and providing coverage

of events for all schools and Community

Education and Recreation.
Joining an organization that not only has
a commitment to children but also to continuous improvement is wonderful, Sheridan
said. The staff here put their whole hearts
into the work they do every single day.
Landscape Plastics Recycling
Collection Event at Johnsons
Nursery
Johnson's Nursery, Inc. headquartered at
W180 N6275 Marcy Road, in Menomonee
Falls, will be holding the annual landscape
plastics recycling collection event on
Saturday, September 12 from 8 a.m. until
noon. This recycling event is a cooperative

effort between Johnson's Nursery, Inc. and

the Waukesha County Department of Parks
and Land Use which allows residents and
businesses to drop off used plastic growing
pots, plant trays, and plant containers free of
charge for recycling. These plastic plant
containers must be free of plant debris, tags,
and metals and will be sorted on site by plastic type.
This collaboration provides an important
recycling service for Waukesha County and
Southeastern WI that is made possible
through this unique partnership. This program provides a sustainable option for residents and businesses to close the loop
through recycling used pots. These pots provide the necessary materials to manufacture

new pots and ultimately divert these plastics

from our local landfills.
Across the U.S., millions of pounds of
agricultural plastics are discarded in local
landfills every year although, according to
East Jordan Plastics, Inc., the manufacturer
and recycler of plastic plant containers, recycling plastic plant containers can recover
upwards of 60% of the energy put into processing the product initially while saving landfill space.
For more information about the landscape plastics recycling event at Johnson's
Nursery, Inc., visit www.johnsonsnursery.com,
call 262-252-4988 or contact Waukesha
County Recycling at 262-896-8300.

Document summarizes village budget background

The property tax accounts for 69 percent of the revenue used by the village of
Menomonee Falls, according to information on the village Web site.
A preliminary budget will be presented
to the board in October and a public hearing will be held in November.
According to a Powerpoint slide from
the Aug. 24 Village Board Committee of
the Whole meeting, state revenue accounts
for 11 percent of the village's revenue while
remaining amount is split between permit
fees, ambulance and other revenues.
In terms of general fund expenditures in
the village budget, personnel costs account

for 64 percent of the budget. In terms of

precise spending, public safety costs
account for $14.3 million, general government $4 million, public works $3.8 million,
development $1.1 million, culture and
recreation $.9 million and $.7 million for
other items.
For the overall tax bill received by residents, 58 percent covers the local school
district, 28 percent the village, 11 percent
Waukesha County, 2 percent Waukesha
County Technical College and 1 percent
the state. The information is based on 2014
tax bills.
For what the village of Menomonee

Falls receives, 76 percent of that amount

covers the general levy, 11 percent debt, 8
percent the library, and 5 percent is other
items.
According to the Powerpoint, the village tax rate has remained at $5.20 per
$1,000 assessed valuation for the past
three years. According to the document,
state transportation or other aids are projected to remain the same or increase
slightly, permit fees are projected to
increase due to increased development
plans and equalized values are projected
to increase by 2 percent.
