-----------------------------------------------------Robina,QLD | For the second straight week under Mitchell
Gardell at Quarterback, the Gold Coast Giants have
produced a blue collar like effort that produced a win.
The Giants simply out hustled their opponent
and the grinding style was assisted by some big plays
from superstar Mal Moylan. Moylan caught 7 passes for
119 yards today and he helped dig his team out of an
early hole.
Perth began the game on top. They too were
willing to get into an arm wrestle and fight for field
position. Outstanding special teams kept them in the
game. Punter Mike Tamarua placed 5 punts inside 20 from
all over the field. Adding to this the Cougars one and
only touchdown came from an amazing kick off return from
Aaron Dobson. Dobson trucked over one defender before
jukeing his way past others for the 95 yard score. This
gave Perth an unlikely 7-3 lead at halftime.
The Gold Coast regained the lead in the third
quarter after an 11 play drive that featured two long
receptions by Moylan. It was the Giants ability to be
aggressive when needed that saw them get on top. Ben
Meredeth ran in the score. Meredeth and Mike Walker were
subbing in for Luke Gordon who left the game early on
with a knee injury.
Gardell kept Perth in the game, throwing his
second end zone pick as he tried to hit his tall tight
ends. But the game was put away when Jake Furmingher
could not find anyone open on 4th down with just over a
minute to play. He handed the ball back to the Giants at
his own 4 yard line and it may have taken the Giants 4
downs to punch it in but Fullback Kane Dunn eventually
got it across the line.
Perth scored a late field goal but the onside
kick failed and the Giants were deserving victors.
