Carews Hits Just Keep Coming;

5 Safeties Lead Twins to Victory
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Nine days ago
Twins second baseman Rod Carew was mulling retirement. Count the Kansas City Royals
among the teams that would gladly have presented him a gold watch for the pleasure of
seeing him hang up his spikes.
I just dont feel like playing anymore, said
Carew, who has battled leg ailments since winning the batting crown in 1969.
Not only did Carew reconsider his decision
to retire, he has embarked on a hitting spree
impressive even by his standards. Since hinting
at retirement, Carew is batting .579 with 11 hits
and five RBI.
Tuesday the native Panamanian produced his
third career five-hit game which included a
game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th
inning of the Twins 4-3 win over the Royals.
His Hit-In Tuesday raised his average 75
points to .364, tied for sixth in the A.L.
Carew was 1-for-2 when he singled home
two runs to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead in the
bottom of the fifth inning. The Royals tied the
game 3-3 on Bob Olivers two-run homer in the
top of the eighth. Carews bases-loaded single
off losing pitcher Tom Burgmeier (0-1) drove
home George Mitterwald with the winner.
Ray Corbin (1-0) earned his first major
league win with two innings of shutout relief.
Angels 4, As 3
ANAHEIM Syd OBrien scored the winning run on an error by Oakland second baseman Dick Green as the Angels snapped the As
eight-game win streak in 15 innings.
OBrien opened the 15th inning with a double off As reliever Ron Klimkowski (1-1). He
scampered to third base on Jim Fregosis fly
out. After an intentional walk to Ken McMullen whose two-run homer gave the Halos a 3
-2 lead in the sixth inning the normally surehanded Green booted a grounder off the bat of
Jerry Moses, allowing the winning run to score.
Eddie Fisher (1-0) notched the win with a
scoreless inning of relief.
Reggie Jacksons solo home run in the top of
the eighth forced extra innings. Sal Bando had
two RBI, tying teammate Rick Monday for the
American League lead with 15.
Orioles 6, Tigers 2
DETROIT Jim Palmer hurled eight sturdy
innings and Boog Powell swatted two home
runs as the Orioles tamed the Tigers.
Palmer (2-0) held Detroit to one run in eight

innings, lowering his ERA to 1.57. Detroits Joe

Niekro (1-2) allowed four runs in 4 1/3 frames.
Red Sox 8, Indians 3
BOSTON Gary Peters (1-2) tossed a sixhitter and had an RBI double as the Red Sox
trimmed the Tribe.
Reggie Smiths RBI double broke a 2-2 tie in
the bottom of the seventh inning. George Scott
added a solo home run in a four-run rally in the
eighth inning for Boston.
Reliever Vince Colbert (0-1) took the loss for
Cleveland, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Senators 4, Yankees 3
NEW YORK Del Unser had a tying tworun pinch-hit single in a three-run ninth inning
rally as the Senators topped the Yankees.
One out after Unsers hit, Toby Harrah scored
the decisive run on an error by Yanks first baseman John Ellis. Reliever Gerry Janeski (1-1)
earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
Yankees third baseman Danny Cater doubled
to boost his hit streak to 12 games.
White Sox 12, Brewers 8
MILWAUKEE Carlos May homered twice
and had three RBI as the White Sox outslugged
the Brewers.
Chicagos Jay Johnstone had three hits and
four RBI. Bill Melton also homered for the Sox.
Tommy Harper had two hits for the Brewers,
extending hit streak to 12 games.

DETROIT (UPI) Right-handed pitcher

Joe Coleman, who suffered a hairline skull fracture March 27, has been restored to the active
list by the Detroit Tigers.
Coleman went 8-12 for the Senators in 1970
with a 3.58 ERA.
To make room for the pitcher they acquired
from the Washington Senators in the Denny
McLain deal, Detroit placed southpaw pitcher
Mike Kilkenny on the 21-day disabled list. Battling abdominal pains diagnosed as an inflammation of the lymph nodes, Kilkenny is 0-1
with a 6.48 ERA this season.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Sam C. Smith, president of the Southern Baseball League which
recently merged with the Texas League, died in
a hospital early Tuesday after a long illness.
Smith, 50, was co-president, along with Bobby Bragan, former Texas League president, of
the Dixie Baseball Association, formed this
year by the merger of the Southern and Texas
leagues.
Smith, who moved here seven years ago from
Dothan, Ala., was in the sporting goods business prior to becoming Southern League president in 1959.

Cubs Jenkins Wins Again, Approaching April Pitching Mark

CHICAGO Its not how you start? Tell it to
Ferguson Jenkins.
Jenkins spun his fourth consecutive complete
game victory to open the season, hurling the
Cubs to a 3-2 win over the Astros on Tuesday.
At 4-0, Jenkins has 10 days most likely two
starts to tie the major league record for wins
in April by a pitcher. That benchmark has been
achieved in each of the past two seasons, by the
Reds Jim Merritt a year ago and by the Yankees Mel Stottlemyre in 1969.
An April shower of six victories? You wouldnt want to bet against Jenkins after his latest
effort. He fanned nine, keeping his team in the
game despite trailing 2-1 for much of the contest,
his teammates stymied by Astros starter Tom
Griffin.
Finally, in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Jenkins took matters into his own hands, tying
the game with a run-scoring single. Jenkins is
batting .462 with two homers and five RBI.
Joe Pepitones RBI single in the eighth, off

Houston reliever George Culver (0-2), drove in

Glenn Beckert with the decisive run.
Pirates 9, Braves 1
PITTSBURGH Willie Stargell homered
and drove in three runs as the Pirates hammered
the Braves.
Stargell leads the majors in home runs (nine)
and RBI (19), and his .388 average is third in
the Senior Circuit.
Bob Moose (1-2) went the distance for the
Bucs. Braves knuckleballer Phil Niekro (1-2)
allowed six runs in three innings.
Cardinals 7, Giants 2
SAN FRANCISCO Reggie Cleveland
struck out a career-high 10 batters and earned
his first major league win as the Cardinals
topped the Giants.
Dick Schofield and Joe Torre homered in
support of Cleveland (1-2). Willie Mays belted
his sixth home run of the season and 634th of
his career. Loser Juan Marichal (2-2) has allowed 16 runs in his past two starts.

Ruths Widow Cheers

Mays, Aaron to 714
ATLANTA (AP) If Willie Mays or Henry Aaron surpass the 714 home run record set
by Babe Ruth, the widow of the legendary
slugger says no one will cheer louder than she.
And, Mrs. Babe Ruth said Tuesday, if the
Babe were here he would be cheering just as
loudly.
It wont hurt my feelings at all. And it
wouldnt bother the Babe either. It would be a
great shot in the arm for the game, something
to keep it alive. And Babe, as much as he dearly loved baseball, would like to see it happen
Im sure, Mrs. Ruth said.
He was proud of his accomplishments. But
he wasnt vain in the sense that he would get
angry when somebodys figures were more
than his. He was too big of a person inside to
let anything like that bother him.
Mrs. Ruth said the Babe would be especially
pleased if his record were broken by someone
with the character of Aaron or Mays.
Both gentlemen are tremendous credits to
the game, she said. They are high class individuals who have given baseball so much.
Both Mays, the only man other than Ruth to
pass the 600 home run mark, and Aaron are off

to fine starts this season. Aaron has four home runs, giving him 596 for his career.
Mays hit his sixth Tuesday,
No. 634.
Even if Mays or Aaron hit
No. 715, they wont have surpassed the Babe in one sense,
said Mrs. Ruth.
Ill remember, as I feel
sure history also will, that he
actually hit his home runs
during a 14-year period, she

said. And he played or

had a chance to play in
only 154 games a year in
those days.
Babe spent the first six
years of his career as a pitcher, and during that time he
only played every fourth day
or so.
Mr. Aaron and Mr. Mays,
if they are lucky, will have
done it in an era when we had
162-game schedules. And
they played only one position
during their careers, said
Mrs. Ruth.
