Ethyl Acetate
US ethyl acetate producers did not announce
any price increases for the fourth quarter,
and it is possible that market participants are
comfortable with rolling over prices in the
final three months of 2013. Feedstock prices
were mixed in October, with ethylene spot
prices increasing later in the month. Market
demand reportedly was steady with coatings
and packaging demand at seasonal norms.
Prices into the distribution market were around
59-62 c/lb at the end of September. The
butyl acetate market was just the opposite in
terms of pricing pressure, as all three major
producers announced 3 c/lb price increases
for October.
European ethyl acetate market prices
remained under pressure in October due to
flat selling prices and high feedstock prices.
Ethyl acetate producers failed to capture any
momentum created by higher costs in August
and September, and feedstock ethylene prices
decreased in October and November. Spot
prices were seen at 840-860/ton ddp
Northwest Europe in early October, and market
participants said prices were unchanged
during the month. Market sentiment was weak
in late October. Ineos said it would keep its
250,000 tpa plant at Hull, UK, operational
despite announcing the closure of the VAM
unit at that facility.
Chinas export prices for ethyl acetate were
quoted at $860-865/ton fob China Main
Port in early October. Average domestic
ethyl acetate prices increased in September,
but the long holiday period at the beginning
of October put a halt to market momentum.
Market prices at the beginning of October were
Rmb5700-5850/ton ex tank in East China and
Rmb6100-6300/ton ex tank in South China.
The prices were quoted at Rmb5800-5900/
ton delivered in North China.
