    TherehasbeenconsiderablemediaattentionrecentlyoveranNDSUathleticssituationandmyhandlingof
    it.Thisincidenthasremindedmeofafewthings.Thefirstisthatwordsmatter.Thesecondisthatcontext
    oftenmattersevenmore.Alongthoselines,inordertoprovidethefullstoryoftheathleticssituationandmy
    handlingofit,Iamprovidingthissummary:

    1)Earlierthisyear,theAthleticsDepartmentinitiatedtheprocessforbiddingonmediacoverageformany
    oftheirevents(astheydoeveryfewyears).RequestsforProposalswereissuedforfootballtelevision
    broadcasting,basketballtelevisionbroadcastingandcombinedradiobroadcasting.KVLYTVwonthe
    footballcontract,MidcoSportsNetworkwonthebasketballcontract,andRadioFMMediawontheradio
    contract.
    2)Aspartoftheimplementationofthesecontracts,theAthleticsDepartmentdevelopedanewsetof
    mediaguidelines.WhileIwascertainlyawareofthebidding/awardprocess,Iwasnotconsultedonthe
    mediaguidelines.ThereareargumentsonbothsidesregardingwhetherIshouldorshouldnthavebeen
    consulted.Thebottomlineisthatitdidnttakeplace,andIbelievethatIshouldhavebeenconsulted.
    3)Themediaguidelinesweremadepublicaboutaweekago.Iwasunawareoftheirexistence,soIdidnt
    knowtheywouldbemadepublic.Atthattime,Iwasoutofstateatthefuneralofoneofmymentors,butthe
    explosivereactiononsocialmediaregardingthenewguidelinesquicklymademeawarethem.
    4)Assoonaspossible,Isoughtinformationonthematter.Initially,itwasmyunderstandingthat:(a)the
    guidelineshadbeenpartofthebidprocesssothatallthelocalmediacompaniesunderstoodthatthese
    weregoingtobeimplementedand(b)thenewguidelineswerefairlycommonacrossthecountry.
    5)Inlightoftheabove,andreflectingmyloyaltytoNDSUfaculty,staffandstudents,Ibriefedthe
    ChancellorandSBHEofthesituationthroughanemailandofferedmysupporttoboththeathleticsstaffand
    theguidelines.Inowunderstandthatmyinitialsupportwasmisplacedandsomeofmytext
    communicationswerenotappropriate.
    6)Overthenexttwodays,Ilearnedthatmyunderstandingoftheproposedguidelineswasnotaccurate,
    andIaskedthattheguidelinesberescinded.Thedecisiontorescindwasreachedthroughextended
    conversations,collaborativediscussion,andadditionalconsiderationofthefactorsthathadntbeenbrought
    tolightbeforethenewguidelineswereannounced.
    7)Thedecisiontorescindtheguidelineswasgenerallywellreceivedandthematterseemedbroughtto
    closure.Whilethisincidenthasbeentumultuous,Ibelievethatanappropriateresolutionhasbeen
    achieved,andIstandbythatresolution.

    Ilookforwardtotheupcomingacademicyearandwelcomingeveryonebacktocampus.
