WILLIAMSPORT

The boys of summer are

back and that means the
start of baseball, New
York-Penn style.
Kicking off the 2016
season, State College made
the short trip to Bowman
Field for a season-opening
battle with archrival Williamsport.
Taking advantage of
some Spikes miscues plus
showing a solid hitting
attack, the Crosscutters
won the season opener 4-1
before 3,693 fans.
I like the way we competed, said Spikes manager Johnny Rodriguez. We
had one bad inning when
our defense let us down on
a bunt play and on a
ground ball to second. If
we make those two plays, it
is a 1-1 game. He (shortstop
Jose Martinez) forgot that
there was only one out and
he rolled the ball home
when we could have had a
double play. Those are the
three key plays in that
inning and it cost us three
runs.
Although both pitchers
escaped unscathed from a
few testy situations, Williamsports Adonis Medina
and State Colleges Dailyn
Martinez matched each
other pitch for pitch
through 212 innings. However, all of that changed in
the bottom of the third.
We had a chance in the
first inning, said Rodriguez. We just didnt make
the plays we had to. But
again, we fought and battled and that was good to
see.
Breaking out the bats,
the Cutters started the
third inning with four

straight base hits to plate

the games first run.
Martinez could have
possibly seen his way out of
further trouble, but a costly
throwing error and an RBI
ground out allowed the
Cutters to score two more
runs as they staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after
three innings.
Other than his mental
mistake, he (Martinez) kept
the ball down and pitched
pretty well, said Rodriguez. But again, if we
make the plays, the score
would have been 1-0 and
the game would have
changed.
While Medina continued
to cruise with the 3-0 lead,
Martinez found more trouble in the sixth as the Cutters parlayed a double and
two singles into a run to
increase their lead to 4-0
after six innings.
Medina picked up the
win, working six innings,
allowing no runs on three
hits, striking out one and
walking a pair.
Although he pitched well
and probably deserved a
better fate, Martinez took
the loss. The lanky righthander was charged with
four runs on nine hits,
walking none and striking
out seven.
The Spikes avoided a
shutout on back-to-back
doubles from Ricardo Bautista and Bladimil Franco
in the ninth to set the final
at 4-1.
The same two teams will
conclude the two-game
series Saturday when Williamsport makes the trip to
Happy Valley for the
Spikes home opener. First
pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
State College will send
Carson Cross, a tall righthander, to the bump to face
Williamsports Ranger
Suarez. One year ago,
Cross spent time with the
Spikes, going 3-2 with a
2.70 ERA. He appeared in
10 games for State College,
nine as a starter.

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta got out of a few jams to dominate the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 6-0 win Friday in
Chicago.

Arrieta, Cubs
dominate Pirates

CHICAGO

Jake Arrieta came

through with the big pitches just when it seemed his
control was abandoning
him and things were getting out of whack.
Then, the Cubs broke
away for another big win.
Arrieta pitched two-hit
ball over six innings, Matt
Szczur homered, Albert
Almora Jr. had three hits
and the Cubs beat the
struggling Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 on Friday.
Arrieta (11-1) struck out
11 and walked three as the
Cubs started the weekend
series on a strong note after
dropping two of three at
Washington.

He walked the bases

loaded in the sixth before
striking out David Freese
and Matt Joyce to escape
that jam. The Cubs then
scored three in the bottom
half to break open a 2-0
game.
If Im down in the strike
zone, good things will happen, Arrieta said. Got a
little out of whack in the
sixth but got back to just
throwing in the zone
down.
Szczur hit a two-run
homer in the first inning on
Francisco Lirianos second
pitch of the game.
Almora had an RBI double in the sixth and drove in
another with a single in the
seventh. He raised his average to .429 in nine games
since he was called up from
the minors last week.

MLB ROUNDUP
Blue Jays
Bautista to DL
Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista was
placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday following
a freakish injury that he
attributed in part to bad
luck.
Bautista sprained his big
left toe Thursday night in
Philadelphia when he got
his foot caught in a fence
latch while trying to make
a catch.
A preliminary exam did
not reveal any broken
bones, but Bautista will
undergo further tests to
determine the severity of
the injury.
Ive put in a lot of hard
work, dedication and effort into being healthy,
and this sort of stuff happens, Bautista said. It
can only happen by playing aggressively, and
thats the type of player I
am.
Bautista is batting .230
with 12 homers and 41
RBIs.

Saunders goes
deep three times
The Blue Jays did fine
without Bautista on Friday
night as Michael Saunders
hit a career-high three
home runs and had eight
RBIs in a 13-3 win at the
Baltimore Orioles.
Batting cleanup, Saunders homered with two on
in the first inning, added
another three-run drive in
the fourth and hit a tworun shot in the sixth.
With a chance to tie the
big-league record of four
home runs in a game,
Saunders bounced into a
double play in the eighth
inning.

The Pirates fell below

.500 at 33-34 with their
eighth loss in nine games.
They were shut out for the
first time in a regular-season game since they lost to
St. Louis on Sept. 28.
We werent able to
convert the opportunities,
and when youre facing an
elite pitcher and you dont
get him and you dont convert it usually doesnt end
up well, manager Clint
Hurdle said.
Arrieta, who blanked
Pittsburgh in the National
League wild-card game last
fall, won his second straight
start since his string of 20
consecutive regular-season
winning decisions ended.
The only hits he allowed
were back-to-back singles
by Jordy Mercer and Chris
Stewart in the third. The

reigning NL Cy Young
Award winner struck out
the next three batters and
wasnt threatened again
until he walked three in a
row with one out in the
sixth.
Arrieta got out of that
bases-loaded jam by striking out Freese after falling
behind 3-0 in the count and
catching Joyce looking at a
3-2 pitch on the inside part
of the plate.
Hes so able to take a
deep breath, step back and
try to recalculate whats
going on, manager Joe
Maddon said. Some guys
get to that moment and its
just going to unravel.
Liriano (4-7) dropped his
fourth straight start. The
left-hander gave up four
runs and six hits in 523
innings, struck out six and
matched a season high with
five walks. He hit Anthony
Rizzo twice with fastballs,
and he fell behind two
pitches into his start.
First couple pitches, you
want to throw strikes,
Liriano said. They got
me.
