1995, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers received a request for the development
of a standard for flexible water connectors for use in potable water supply systems under
continuous pressure and in accessible locations only. The request was referred to the ACME A112
Main Committee and subsequently assigned to its Panel 18 for Plumbing Fittings.
IAPMOs (International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials) proposed PS 7 4
95, Reinforced Flexible Water Connectors, was used as a base document for the development of
t& Standard. While in the development stage, another IAPMO standard, PS 1489, Flexible
Metallic Water Connectors, was also used and the requirements incorporated into this ACME
Standard. The first edition of this Standard was approved as an American National Standard on
January 28, 1999
In December 1999 a request was approved by the A112 Main Committee to consider the effects
of chloramine on elastomers and if necessary, develop some requirements. This request was
referred to a newly created Project Team on Chloramine Resistance (PTCRT). After several
meetings and lengthy discussion, the Project Team developed language to be incorporated in
this Standard to which it would be relevant in the form of a nonmandatory appendix. The
recommendation of the Project Team was subsequently approved by the Main Committee. This
revision implements that decision.
Suggestions for improvement of this Standard will be welcome. They should be sent to The
American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Attn.: Secretary, A112 Standards Committee; Three
Park Avenue; New York, NY 10016.
This Standard was approved as an American National Standard on October 20, 2003.

CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE A112 COMMITTEE

General. ACME Standards are developed and maintained with the intent to represent
the consensus of concerned interests. As such, users of this Standard may interact with
the Committee by requesting interpretations, proposing revisions, and attending Committee meetings. Correspondence should be addressed to:
Secretary, A112 Standards Committee
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Three Park Avenue
New York, NY 10016-5990
Proposing Revisions. Revisions are made periodically to the Standard to incorporate
changes that appear necessary or desirable, as demonstrated by the experience gained
from the application of the Standard. Approved revisions will be published periodically.
The Committee welcomes proposals for revisions to this Standard. Such proposals should
be as specific as possible, citing the edition, the paragraph number(s), the proposed wording,
and a detailed description of the reasons for the proposal, including any pertinent documentation. When appropriate, proposals should be submitted using the A112 Project Initiation
Request Form.
Interpretations. Upon request, the A112 Committee will render an interpretation of
any requirement of the Standard. Interpretations can only be rendered in response to a
written request sent to the Secretary of the A112 Standards Committee.
The request for interpretation should be clear and unambiguous. It is further recommended that the inquirer submit his/her request in the following format:
Subject:
Edition:
Question:
--`,``,`,,,`,,,``,`````,`,`,,-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

Cite the applicable paragraph number(s) and the topic of the inquiry.
Cite the applicable edition of the Standard for which the interpretation
is being requested.
Phrase the question as a request for an interpretation of a specific
requirement suitable for general understanding and use, not as a request
for an approval of a proprietary design or situation. The inquirer may
also include any plans or drawings that are necessary to explain the
question; however, they should not contain proprietary names or information.

Requests that are not in this format will be rewritten in this format by the Committee
prior to being answered, which may inadvertently change the intent of the original request.
ACME procedures provide for reconsideration of any interpretation when or if additional
information that might affect an interpretation is available. Further, persons aggrieved by
an interpretation may appeal to the cognizant ACME Committee or Subcommittee. ACME
does not "approve," "certdy," "rate," or "endorse" any item, construction, proprietary
device, or activity.
Attending Committee Meetings. The A112 Standards Committee schedules meetings as
needed, which are open to the public. Persons wishing to attend any meeting should contact the Secretary of the A112 Standards Committee. The A112 home page contains information on future meeting dates and locations.

flowing pressure upstream of the connector is a maximum of 75 psig (517 kPa gage) and the flow rate is 2
r10.4 gpm (0.126 lr0.016 L/s).

Flexible water connectors shall have a pressure drop

of no more than the values specified in Table 1.

Table 1for at least 30 sec, after which the pressure drop
across the connector shall be measured.

4.2.2 For each cycle, the flow shall be stopped and

the pressure shall be increased from a maximum of 75
psig (517 kPa gage) to 180 15 psig (1241 134 kPa gage).

NONMANDATORY APPENDIX A
EVALUATING THE CHLORAMINE RESISTANCE OF ELASTOMERS
Accelerated life-cycle testing and anecdotal evidence
have shown that exposure to aqueous chloramine can
have deleterious effects to some elastomers. ASTM D
6284, Standard Test Method for Rubber Property-Effect
of Aqueous Solutions with Available Chlorine and Chloramine,' may be useful in evaluating the chloramine
resistance of elastomers.
ASTM standards may be obtained from the American Society
for Testing and Materials (ASTM), 100 Barr Harbor Dnve, West
Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959.
