Ancient and Medieval Classifications
Linnaean Era
18th Century
Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist Carl
Linnaeus (1707-1778) was the most revered
botanist of his time. He simplified the
classification system by imparting a two-part
naming system, called binomial nomenclature,
to make identification easier. His two works
are regarded as the starting points of modern
botanical and zoological taxonomy: the global
flora Species Plantarum (1753) and tenth edition
of Systema Naturae (1758) including global
fauna.
