Mrs. Stassens Math and English Newsletter

Welcome Back
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at
Broadview Public School! I hope you had an
enjoyable summer with family and friends,
and are ready to begin another exciting
school year.
My name is Jennifer Stassen, I will be your
childs Math and English teacher. This will
be my ninth year teaching, but my fourth
year teaching at Broadview Public School. I
am very excited to be your childs teacher,
and I am looking forward to a year full of
learning, laughter, and success. I hope that
we can work closely together to make sure
that your child has a successful year.

Balanced Mathematics
Instruction
Balanced Mathematics instruction is based on the
belief that students learn Mathematics most
effectively when they are given opportunities to
investigate ideas and concepts through problemsolving and are then guided into an understanding
of the principles involved.
Instructional Approaches - The balanced program
will include guided/direct instruction, as well as
opportunities for student inquiry in which students
generate their own solutions
Teaching Through Problem-Solving - When
students engage in problematic situations, they
become curious and motivated to explore and
generalize mathematical ideas. Problems will be
carefully selected and differentiated to be
accessible yet challenging for all students.
Purposeful Practice - Once conceptual
understanding has been established, purposeful
practice will help students develop computational
and procedural fluency.

This newsletter will provide an overview of

the Math and English programs, as well as
some teaching strategies that will be used
to ensure successful program delivery.

Basic Facts and Operational Skills - Operational

skill involves understanding why a fact or
procedure makes sense and how it connects to
other concepts and skills.
Thoughtful Use of Resources - Textbooks,
manipulatives, technology, media and professional
materials are examples of the variety of resources
and tools that will be used to support student
learning.

Balanced Literacy Approach

Septembers Focus

I will be using a Balanced Literacy approach

during literacy instruction. This method requires
students to use multiple strategies to achieve
reading and writing proficiency. Components of a
Balanced Literacy Program include:
Model Reading/Writing - Teacher models
reading and writing processes through
demonstration, explicit instruction, and think
alouds.
Shared (Interactive) Reading/Writing Teacher and students practice reading and
writing processes together through
interactive activities and discussion.
Guided Reading/Writing - Teacher guides
students as they practice reading and writing
strategies and apply problem-solving
behaviours.
Independent Reading/Writing - Students
practice reading and writing strategies
independently. Teacher assesses learning and
reteaches as necessary.

During September, I will be spending a great

deal of time getting to know each student using
a variety of assessments. I will be gathering
information about each students strengths,
needs, and learning styles. This information will
enable me to create lessons that are inclusive
for all learners, regardless of differences in
abilities and readiness levels.

Homework
In order to improve reading skills and reinforce
spelling and writing skills, it is very important
that all students read each weekday for at
least 15 minutes. Reading can take place in many
forms: Read to Self, Read to Someone, or
Listen to Reading. Students are expected to
document their reading in their monthly reading
logs. The Reading Log will be checked monthly
and collected on the first day of each new
month.
Furthermore, students are expected to work
diligently during class time to complete
assigned work. Students who have not finished
their work in the time allowed are expected to
complete the work at home in order to be
prepared for the next day.

In our first Language Arts unit, students will be

creating autobiographies. They will be given a
chance to share and explore their identity with
others in the class. This is always a very
special unit as it provides an opportunity to
build community and a more welcome
classroom by learning about each other.
In math, we will begin the year with the
Number Sense and Numeration strand.
Students will learn about the place value
system through reading, representing,
comparing, and ordering numbers to 1000.

Communication
I value open communication between school
and home. I will keep in frequent
communication with you concerning the learning
in our classroom. Please feel free to contact
me if you have any questions or concerns.
Email is generally the quickest way to reach
me during the school day. My e-mail is
[email protected]. You can also send
a note in your childs agenda.
