PICK TWELVE SINKS HUNTERS

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Newcastle,NSW | The Townsville Marlins got back to there scoring
best racking up a 45-24 victory over the Newcastle Hunters. The
Marlins who average 26 points per game, best in the League were
helped out by there defence who took not one but two
Interceptions back for touchdowns to end the 1st half.
Up to this point the game had been fairly tight. Explosive
Joey Clarke showed what he could do by taking the opening kickoff
95 yards for a 7-0 lead to the home side. Townsville responded with
Brooke McDonnell streaking through the coverage from 23 yards
out to score. Patrick Gill was back to his very best tonight and he
shredded what was a very good secondary. The secret was Gill had
plenty of time all night, he was sacked just twice and he was able
to pick apart the coverage for 245 yards and three scores.
Both teams traded field goals and Newcastle looked the
more likely to go into halftime with a lead. Luke Ogden was
pressured by Trent Dugan and scrambling to his right tried to find
Eric Decker only to have Stephen Cherry-Evans under cut the
route. Cherry-Evans with momentum beat a couple of tacklers on
his way 25 yards for the score.
On the very next possession it got even worse for
Newcastle. A good drive had them close to tying the game away
but this time Terrence Smith intercepted a pass intended for Peter
Paea in the end zone. Smith is one of the fastest Linebackers in the
League and he proved it by out running everyone 98 yards for 6
more. It was the defining moment of the game. No getting around
it. It cost us any chance Said Laurie Frier when quizzed about his
teams end of the 1st half.
The second half was much more free flowing and that
suited Townsville. Fullback Josh Thompson caught a swing pass at
the goaline for a 31-10 lead but the Hunters responded with a long
drive and a Michael Darby score. James Jones made a spectacular
catch over the middle to restore the 21 point advantage but then
Saloisi Blackman broke free from coverage to make a quick fire
score for 28 yards out. Greg Watene rounded out the scoring for
Townsville and Newcastle had nothing left and were stopped on
downs. The Marlins were back after two shock losses and now
Newcastle are left in the lower end of the play off picture unless
they can get some results going there way.
