FIELD WORK NO. 11
DETERMINATION OF THE AREA OF A FIELD
WHOSE CORNERS ARE SIDESHOT FROM
TRAVERSE STATION
SUBMITTED BY:
GREGORIO, GEO
Vernier. A reading zeros on the horizontal circle, and run the traverse of the
stations clockwise.
4. Shoot the corners of the lot from the nearest stations and measure the
corresponding distance.
5. Check the traverse for angular error of closure (AEC). Re-run the traverse
if the actual AEC is not within the allowable accuracy requirement.
6. Calculate the area of the lot by DMD or DPD method.
7. Plot the lot by coordinates method on a 30 x40 tracing paper.

According to the procedures, we should get the bearing, azimuth and also
the length of each side of the LPU campus. To determine such things, we
used the total station for convenience in order to complete the data easily
and accurately. We did side shots to determine the length by using Cosine
law. But first, we made sure that our parallel lines are straight to lessen our
error in this field work.
Total station
This command, designed for total stations and manual entry. It is the
principle data collection routine with total stations. Sideshot/Traverse
interacts with numerous settings, including the feature codes that will draw
line work. All settings in Configure Reading will impact Sideshot/Traverse,
including the Number of Distance Readings, Average Direct & Reverse,
Hgt/Desc Prompt on Save, Angle Only in Reverse Face and Function of
Enter Key.
Foresights
The Foresight Screens are entered automatically after exiting the Take
Backsight screen. The Foresight Screen is also entered quickly, after
selecting Sideshot/Traverse from the main menu, if you press Enter or OK in
the Backsight Point screen. When you choose Sideshot/Traverse, you are
always given the option to accept the default backsight orientation and go
straight to your foresights. There are 2 major types of Foresight Screens: (1)
Standard Total Station, (2) Robotic Total Station. The GPS screen is
discussed under the Store Points chapter.
In the field work we have done, we observed that using lines parallel to the
building is really necessary. We managed to create parallel lines in order to
get the total length of each side using side shots and the cosine law. Using
the total station is very convenient to use in gathering all the data we needed,
since it can record the azimuth and length of the given segment of a line. In
this field work, we were able to practice our skills to determine the bearing
and area of a lot. We were also able to exercise our skills to correct the data
by using transit or compass rule.
