die issue of TV CkxiH, dearly a crude copy of the denarii of C . Serydfi M.f,

Important for the eariiet stages of the coinage is the evidence of weight standards . T h e r e are periods, such as the Second P u n i c W a r ^ w h e r e d i e hoardcvidcacc suggests ^declining standard, and it is reasonable to arrange those issues
of which the position is not determined by the hoards according to this pattern.
ra^icuous^fe^ure^the denarius coinage of the late second a n d early first
centuries B . c . i s ^he-extensive addition to the typaTirf^tir-inarksnumbers,
letters, or symbofc^-the purpose of which was to help the moneyers keep a check
on the dies. T h e systems of control-marks employed b y the moneyers developed
considerably over the years, and their development sometimes enables issues to
be placed i n their correct order. F o r instance, C . M a r i u s Capito's system of
control-marks is clearly based on a misunderstanding of that of P . Crepusius,
and his term of office must therefore be later.
Lastly, once the bulk of the denarius coinage is, as far as possible, arranged
in order, greater precision can often be achieved by considering the evidence"
for the contemporaneity of issues. E v e n without the help of die-studies, certain
issues can readily be seen to be o f exactly the same date. F o r instance, C ^ V i b i u s
Pana and Q. T i t i u s each used for his bronze a type struck i n silver by thetrther,and they seem to h a v e p l a i m ^ J ^ e i r t y p e s together. Important, too, is the e v i dence to be derived from l o o k i n g a t s u c h things as disposition of legend, use of
titolature, etc. T h i s sort of evidence long ago suggested, almost certainly rightly,
that M . Atilius Saranus, Q. Marcius L i b o , and L . Semproatus Pitio formed a
c o l l i e of moneyers.

which associate tfce latest^eoinage of the didrachm system or the earliest coinage
of the denarius system with coins of Hieronymus or the Syracusan democracy^
bodrgroupe showing comparable degrees of wear. 1 the face of t h k evidence,
it seems p e r v a s e to date the creation of the denarius system at any other time
than during the Second Punic W a r . O f course, it cannot be assumed that a she
or part of a site w h i c h closes at a certain date will produce a sequence of coins
reaching right do\ro to that iiate. F o r instance, the coins found a r N u m a n t i a
have no evidential value whatever. T T ^ coins from each of the qee camps of
153/137, 133, and 74 B . C . are all of the same period, with the single exception of
an uncia of about n o B . c . fromthe camp of 74 B . c . Similarly, tbe4atest coins
from Castra aecilia o f 79 B . C . date from before 100 B . c . B u t there j s a^vtry"
strong probabihtyjthat the latest Roman coins from below the destructionjevel at
Morgantina were struck only just before the destruction, since the various issues
afe represented by numerous examples, and none of these examples shows mor^
than slight wear. W h e n the hoard-evidence is taken with this evidence from
JVTrgantina, ^ a t g j o r ^ e j n t r o d u c t i o n of the denarius of about 2 H ^ x r s e e m s
inescapable. T h e Mars/Eagle gold may then be i d e n t i f y w i ^

mint of Rome d a t ^ i t o 208 B . C . * I n the second century B . C . there are no absolutely fixed p o m
L H L i c i n i u s and C n . Domitius are to be associated with the foundation of Narbo,
but the date for this given by Vellerns has ben questioned by H . B . Mattingly.
A t the moment, this date, 118 : . , still seems to me most likely to be correct.
I f it is, the depositiotf of the S a n Giovanni Incarico hoard, which closes some
what earlierthan the issues of L . L i c i n i u s and C n . Domitius and comes from the
site of Fregellae, should be associated with the destruction of the town i n
125 B . C .
T h e crucial point i n the middle of the second century B . c . is the re-tariffing
of the denarius at 16 instead of 10 asses, which is separated from the close of
the an Giovanni Incarico hoard by perhaps twenty years of coinage. Since the
official use of sestertii as units of account cannot antedate the re-tariffing, this
can b e firmly dated before 140 B . c . by the occurrence <tf sestertii i n a Senatusconsultum of that year.
1
I n the first century B . c . , dated issuesbecome more and more frequent and
th assignment of the intervening issues to an exact year becomes steadily easier,
with the help of certain other types of evidence.
r p i e Republican coinage is marked by a constantly increasing diversification

of type. At the same time, the reference of thetypes approaches closer and closer
to the time o f issue, and some issues f the first century B . c . , once placed within
the space of few yearsrgt&^>e shown to belong to an exact year,-where alone
their types would have been relevant. F o r instance,*the quinarii of L.>Rubrius
Dossenus seem to fit only 87 B . C .

Finally, a useful check on the dating of the Republican coinage is provided by
the cases where a moneyer can be identified with the holder of another magistracy. Although too little is known of the cursus honorum for us to be able to date^
a m a n V moneyership from his praetorship or consulship, the knowledge of
the rest of a moneyer's career may confirm other evidence for the date of his
mneyership, as in the case of the four Metelli brothers, consuls i n 123, 117,
115, and 113 B . C .
T h e dating of the coinage of the Roman Republic presented here depends ,
t h e i v o n an assessment of all the types of vidence which have been described.
T h a t of the hoards is given in full, partly i n order to make fffeely available the
most important type of evidence for this dating, partly asmaterial for the study
of the circulation of the Republican coinage. I hope to be able to present shortly
an account of the other types of evidence and a discussion of the historical and
economic significance of the coinage..

and are associated with the denarius coinage.

bronze coins with Cfrn-ear.

sequences ( M . Thompson, R. Thomsen, a n M . H . Crawford, The Agrimon hoard, 125-6).

TABLE XII
1. Mjpitary issues are distinguished by b a n g inset.
Th bronze issue of C N . P I S O F R V G I , of which only one specimen is known, i s not

38 B . c . ( M . Bahrfeldt, Die rmische Goldmunzenprgung, 87).
T h e numerous bronze issues of the triumvirs and their associates are not included in this
table. T h e issue of C A E S A R D I V I ? with D I V O S I V L I V S (CRR n o s ^ i ^ - a ) probably
belongs in and after 38 B . c . , the fleet prefect series^of-M. Antony (CRR^nosT 1255-70) in
and after 35 B . c . No satisfactory attribution has yet been found fona third major issue, that
of Q . O P P I V S P R (CRR noe. 1277-8); T h e Capricorn, which appears oh one variety, suggests a late rather than an early date (contra,- A . Alfoldi, Mlanges... Crcopino, 25).

romane i , 49.
8. N o satisfactory arrangement exists of. these issues of Octavian. As a group\ theymSj^ be
regarded as running between c. 34 B . c . and 13 August 29 B . C .
(a) T h e meaiiing of the types is equivocal und the legends consist simply of the name of
Octavian. I n both these respects the group separates itself sharply from the issues of
Octavian as I I I V I R and as I M P V I I , the latter presumably struck at the time of the triumphs
during 13-15 August-29^ B.c.
(b) T h e issue of Scarpus with Victory on a globe (CRR, nos.uSi-^^lynolater
than
30 B . C . (the supposed issue of Scarpus for Octavian as Augustus is a fiction), seems to copy
the issue with C A E S A R D I V I F; and similar type (RIC i , Augustus, nos. 27=4).
(c) I t is improbable that, Augustus struck no coinage at all between c. 34 B . c . and the time
of his triumphs.

(J) T h e evidence of die hoards strongly suggests that the issues with I M P C A E S A R

inference is that diese wer-struck earlier, and it cannot be argued against t h s inference that
theXegionary denarii of M . Antony did not circulate normally. T h e y did.

C A E S A R / A V G V S T with candelabrum (RI i , Augustus, no. 372)unlike^anjc other

The earliest phase of the denarius coinage comprises two anonymous issues from the mint of
Rome and numerous issues, jnoetly signed, but sometimes anonymous, from military mints
outside Rome. Although all these issues are.contemporary* the eleven hoards which contain
only anonymous issues are placed togetherfirstforche sak t of convenience. They are followed
by the hoards which contain signed issues fromrmitary mintsr-Thefirstgroup of these consists of three hoards of victoriati and the second group consists of seven hoards of victoriati,
four of denarii or quinarii, and six of bronze coins. The [Pisa hoard stands by itself as the last
before the beginning of the sequence of signed issues jfirom the mint of Rome. Thefirstof
these appears in the Paestunj-hoarcL

The following four hoards display about the same amount of wear as the victoriati in the
Citt Sant'Angelo hoard (no. 129) and were clearly deposited some time after the date of
the latest coins in them. Since, therefore, they cannot be regarded as providing evidence for
the arrangement of the coinage, they are placed together as the latest victoriatus boards.

It is impossible, to establish exactly, how many: coins of each type were foundJrhe4atestpublication does not take account of a small number of coins mentioned in the first
publication and of a slightly larger number in the second. But since thse discrepancies do not affect the picture of a sequence of coins going down to 2 B.c., the figures
from the latest publication are given here unaltered.
