assignment instructions, and rubrics
TOPICAL OUTLINE BY WEEK
Week 1:

The need for big data in todays technological and business environment

Reading:

Chapters 1 & 2

Discussion:

Provide three examples of big data, explain why each of them are important to the industry where
they are used, and use the internet to locate at least one industry that has implemented one of your
examples.

Assignment:

Review the big data examples in Chapter 1 of the textbook, research additional articles in the
Grantham library, and write a minimum 3-page paper in current APA format that discusses the
commonalities and differences between these examples along with recommendations of industries
where these solutions can be used.

Week 2:

The importance of data analysis

Reading:

Chapters 3 & 4

Discussion:

Think of a creative way you would implement the Hadoop or NoSQL technologies within a project,
share your implementation ideas, and discuss why you think they would be successful.

Assignment:

Locate one or more research articles in the Grantham library that discusses big data analytics and
write a minimum 3-page paper in current APA format that discusses the pros and cons to data
analytics, why this process is cumbersome, and include situations where data analytics would not be
useful.

Week 3:

Defining the data warehouse

Reading:

Chapters 5 & 6 and the following resources:

http://www.datawarehouse.inf.br/papers/information_builders_dashboard_best_practic
es.pdf
https://www.idashboards.com/

Discussion:

Discuss the differences between big data and data warehousing, provide your opinion on which one
is better for analytics, why it is better, and provide an example of when it would be a better choice.

Assignment:

Review the case studies in Chapter 5 of the textbook and write a minimum 3-page paper in current
APA format that discusses the commonalities and differences in the solution approach for each of
the provided scenarios along with other potential solutions to the case studies.

Week 4:

Design elements of a data warehouse

Reading:

Chapters 7 & 8

Discussion:

Select one platform and discuss why you think it is better than the remaining platforms.
2

Assignment:

Write a minimum 3-page paper in current APA format that summarizes the workloads, query
classifications, and design limitations listed in this weeks reading assignment and discuss the
importance of including each of these concepts within a data warehouse design.

Week 5:

Challenges in designing and managing a data warehouse

Reading:

Chapters 9 & 10

Discussion:

Discuss the most common challenges encountered in a data warehouse, provide creative ways to
overcome those challenges, and search the internet for one real world example where your method
would be effective.

Assignment:

Use Google to locate data warehousing solutions offered by IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon,
then write a minimum 3-page paper in current APA format that compares and contrasts the
capabilities of each solution and provide the names of some organizations that utilize each of these
solutions.

Week 6:

Data warehouse management

Reading:

Chapters 11 & 12 and the following resource:

http://www.foodtecsolutions.com/solutions/dwDashboard

Discussion:

Select three of the goals of information life cycle management that you think are the most important
to data warehousing and discuss why you feel this way, how dashboards can be used in the process,
and provide a real life example of each.

Assignment:

Use Google, The Grantham library, and the textbook to research the complexity issues of processing
big data. Then write a minimum 3-page paper in current APA format that provides at least three
complexities and discusses the reasons they make the implementation complex.

Week 7:

The science of data

Reading:

Chapter 13 and the following resource:

http://eecs.wsu.edu/~yinghui/mat/courses/fall%202015/resources/what-is-datascience.pdf

Discussion:

List and describe the steps of the process of data discovery. Discuss how you plan to implement
them in this weeks project assignment and why each one is important to data analysis and data
warehousing frameworks.

Assignment:

Read case study number 7 from Appendix A of the textbook and write a minimum 5-page paper in
current APA format that provides a design for a data warehouse that can be used as a solution for
this case study. Your design should include steps the company needs to take, the reasons those
steps are important, a conceptual data model, and any necessary diagrams or charts.

Week 8:

Data warehouse architectures

Reading:

Chapter 14
3

Discussion:

Select one topic from the course that relates to architectures or infrastructures, then discuss how
you would implement your selection in a data warehouse project.

Assignment:

Using last weeks project as a starting point, add an additional minimum 5-pages to the project paper
in current APA format that discusses how data will be selected for inclusion in the warehouse,
lifecycle management plans, how dashboards can be implemented to help management warehouse,
any potential challenges the company will face in this implementation, and your recommendations
for how they can overcome those challenges.

The following table outlines the academic effort required by students to be successful in this course. While the times in
the table are approximate, it is presented to help students with their time management. Please note, depending on the
student's background knowledge and experience of the course subject and an individual student's academic capabilities,
