FOREWORD
Coaxial cabling is installed in nearly every residence. In 2005 the Telecommunications Industry
Association (TIA) recognized that there was no single standard, including ANSI/TIA-570-B,
which contained the requirements for a coaxial cabling system capable of supporting current
and emerging technologies. TIA agreed to develop these requirements as an addendum to
ANSI/TIA-570-B. The project was assigned to the TR-42.2 subcommittee for residential tele-
communication infrastructure under the TR-42 Engineering Committee for premises telecom-
munications cabling.
This Addendum replaces and supersedes the requirements for coaxial cabling, cables, and
connectors in ANSI/TIA-570-B.
TIA standards documents are developed within the Technical Committees of the TIA and the 20
standards coordinating committees of the TIA standards board. Members of the committees
serve voluntarily and without commission. The companies that they represent are not necessari-
ly members of the TIA. The standards developed within the TIA represent a consensus of the
broad expertise on the subject. This expertise comes from within the TIA as well as those out-
side of the TIA that have an expressed interest. The viewpoint expressed at the time that this
standard was approved was from the editors experience and the state of the art at that time.
Users are encouraged to verify that they have the latest revision of the standard.
This Addendum has been prepared by the TR-42.2 subcommittee and approved by the TR-42
Engineering Committee.
There are two annexes in this Addendum. Annexes A and B are informative and not considered
as requirements of this Addendum.

ANSI/TIA-570-B-1
1 INTRODUCTION
This Addendum establishes performance and technical criteria for coaxial cabling system confi-
gurations for accessing and connecting their respective elements. In order to determine the re-
quirements of a generic coaxial cabling system, performance requirements for various tele-
communications services were considered.
The diversity of services currently available, coupled with the continual addition of new services,
means that there may be cases where limitations to desired performance occur. When applying
specific applications to these cabling systems, the user is cautioned to consult application stan-
dards, regulations, equipment vendors, and system and service providers for applicability, limi-
tations, and ancillary requirements.
2 SCOPE
This Addendum specifies additional requirements and recommendations for 75 broadband
coaxial cabling, cables, cords and connecting hardware to support community antenna televi-
sion (CATV, commonly referred to as cable television), satellite television and other applications
in single- and multi-dwelling residential buildings as part of a telecommunications infrastructure
as defined by ANSI/TIA-570-B. Included are transmission and mechanical requirements and
requirements related to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for cabling, cables and connectors;
cabling installation and connector termination procedures; and field testing procedures.
3 NORMATIVE REFERENCES
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute pro-
visions of this Addendum. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All stan-
dards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged
to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated be-
low. ANSI and TIA maintain registers of currently valid national standards published by them.

5 TOPOLOGY
Broadband coaxial cabling consists of cables, cords and connecting hardware. Outlet cabling
extends between the telecommunications outlet/connector and the distribution device. Back-
bone cabling extends between a distribution device in one location and a distribution device in
another location. Broadband coaxial cabling shall follow the topology of ANSI/TIA-570-B. Fig-
ure 1 shows an example of this topology, without backbone cabling, in a single-dwelling resi-
dence. Figure 2 shows an example of this topology, with backbone cabling, in a multi-dwelling
residence.

9.2.1 General
The requirements in 9.2 are for non-plenum cables only. For plenum cables, transmission per-
formance, materials of construction and dimensions may vary from those specified in the refe-
renced documents. Consult the manufacturer for requirements for plenum cables in those juris-
dictions where plenum cables are required.
Series 6 coaxial cables shall meet the requirements of ANSI/SCTE 74 or the SBCA Series 6
Recommended Practices.
NOTE The cables specified in the SBCA Series 6 Recommended Practices
have extended frequency performance and lower dc resistance requirements
which may be required for satellite television systems.
Series 11 coaxial cables shall meet the requirements of ANSI/SCTE 74.
Trunk, feeder and distribution cables shall meet the requirements of ANSI/SCTE 15.
Braided multipurpose cables shall meet the requirements of SCTE 71
For all frequencies from 5 MHz to 1002 MHz (or 5 MHz to 3000 MHz for cable intended for sa-
tellite television systems) the insertion loss at 20 3 C (68 5 F) of Series 6 cable shall not
exceed the values determined using equation 4.

9.4.1.1 Physical
9.4.1.1.1 Male
F-type male connectors for Series 6 cable shall meet the physical requirements of AN-
SI/SCTE 123. F-type male connectors for Series 11 cable and for miniature coaxial cable shall
meet the physical requirements of ANSI/SCTE 124. The use of compression type male connec-
tors is recommended.
NOTE Because the F-type male connector for Series 6 cable uses the center
conductor of the cable as a connector contact, SCTE refers to it as a feed-
through connector. This should not be confused with the F-type female feed-
through connector described below.
9.4.1.1.2 Female
F-type female feed-through connectors for indoor environments shall meet the physical re-
quirements of ANSI/SCTE 02. F-type female feed-through connectors for outdoor environments
shall meet the physical requirements of ANSI/SCTE 01.
9.4.1.2 Electrical
F-type mated connectors shall meet the performance requirements of ISO/IEC 15018 for type
BCT-C connectors for CATV.
17
ANSI/TIA-570-B-1
10 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
18
ANSI/TIA-570-B-1
11.1 General
Coaxial cable can be damaged during the construction phases of rough-in, wall sheathing instal-
lation, and even during the siding of the exterior. Many of these damaging faults result from
causes such as nails and staples penetrating the cable, severe kinks in the cable where the ca-
ble was pulled through a drilled hole in a stud or joist, or a cable tear where the cable sheath
and conductors are damaged from the pull. In addition, coaxial cabling is particularly suscepti-
ble to poor connector installation practices. For these reasons, coaxial cabling shall be accep-
tance tested to ensure compliance with ANSI/TIA-570-B and this Addendum. Acceptance test-
ing for coaxial cabling includes:
1) a visual inspection of all cabling;
2) verification of all cabling; and
3) either:
a) qualification; or
b) performance characterization.
11.3 Verification
Verification testing of coaxial cabling identifies opens or shorts and shall be performed during
rough-in, prior to the installation of insulation and wall sheathing, to ensure proper end-to-end
connectivity.
11.4.1 Qualification
Qualification tests the ability of the coaxial cabling to carry the appropriate signal (e.g., CATV,
satellite television). If done, qualification shall be performed using actual signals and equipment
appropriate to the application, or by the use of a qualification test instrument. For example,
CATV cabling could be qualified by visual verification of acceptable television reception or by
measuring received signal levels using a power meter.
