Pablo Neruda
Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, many people recognise him as Pablo Neruda , his pen

name. He is a Spanish writer so all of his poems had been written in Spanish. He is also a

politician . He is well-known for the political and explicit love poems. Furthermore, he received

International Peace Prize the Literature Nobel Prize in 1950 and 1971 respectively not only those

,but he also won other awards. The writing techniques such as syntax, paradox, repetition,

rhyme, symbolism and others were always used in his writing work. Some of these were written

in his poems. For instance I do not love you except because I love you, Love sonnets XVII,

published in 1959, and If you forget me, published in 1952. It is noticeable that the three

examples are love poems. Pablo Neruda used the nature symbols such as fire, plants and

darkness to indicate his feeling toward his lover.

In the poem I do not love you except because I love you. Pablo Neruda used the

symbols of fire, blood and ray to represent his emotion to whom he loved. He wrote about a

person who he really loved without any conditions although they were not in relationship

anymore. The first stanza is about his feeling and relationship that switches back and forth.

Sometimes it goes well ,while sometimes it is not. For the first outstanding symbol of the first

stanza is My heart moves from cold to fire (line 6). The fire symbolizes his passion to his love.

However, there is the time when the author didnt feel anything with that person as he used the

word cold to expresse his feeling. For example, I go from loving you to not loving you (line

2). The phrase loving you is the fire, but not loving is the meaning of cold. The second stanza is

about the author who loves only her and he never wants to change. Furthermore, I hate you

deeply, and hating you. (line 6), he tried to stop thinking that he loved her because it made him

feel more painful, but truly, he didn't hate her. Is that I do not see you but love you blindly this

statement means it hurt him every time when the author saw her and he realized that he shouldnt
have seen her anymore, even without seeing her he still loved her (line 8). In line 9,10 and 11, he

mentioned about January light , this means the winter was coming and it would be cold same as

his feeling that would be freezing and didnt feel anything around him. The symbol in this stanza

is Ray from the sun which represents hope that he never had in this poem. Because I love you in

fire and blood it expresses that he was deeply passionate about her and it was better to die rather

than stay without one he loved.

According to If you forget me, the author used the symbol of roots and flowers to

show the reaction if his lover forget him. In the beginning it seems like a continue part from the

name of this poem. Thus, it can be read If you forget me, I want you to know one thing (line 1-

2). Next, he mentioned If you look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at

my window (line 4-6). This shows the beauty because there are various shades of leaves falling

down in autumn ,so it had a nice view and great weather. All of these are the beautiful

phenomenons which he used to them to refer to his lovers beauty. Every impression around him

somehow, reminds him of his mistress. were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours and

wait for me (line 15-16). The writer used boats to show his feeling, like when people feel

excited when they are on the boat and see the destination like island. When they get close to it,

they will be more exciting and interesting same as the authors feeling when he got close to his

lover. In line 17 to 30, the author think it was easy and he was able to stop loving and forgot her.

I shall lifted my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land (line 33, 34, and 35). Roots

is the memories and feelings between him and his lover. The land was like someone he could be

with. In other words, if she leave him alone he will not feel hurt much and he can find a new

person. It seems impossible because these are completely different from the first quarter of the

poem. He loved her so much and love was not simple to forget someone who he truly loved. In
line 36 till the end, it means if she thought she was meaningful for him and came back to him. He

wanted her to know that his passion and memories never last. As long as she still loved and

thought of him, he would feel the same . The beginning of poem presents romantic love of his

lover and in the middle he wrote what would had happened if she had forgotten him then he

ended his poem with love romantic as the first part.

Love Sonnets XVII, the symbols of flowers, plants and darkness had been used in this

poem to display the way author loved his woman. I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or

topaz, or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off (line 1, 2, and 3). The salt-rose, topaz and

carnations are beautiful and people admire them similar to his paramour beauty. Then ,he

mentioned about he loved his lover as certain dark things. It represents the secret love inside of

him. In the second stanzas I love you as the plant that never blooms but carries itself the light of

hidden flowers (line 5-6).The outside look was not important to him. He loved all her

imperfections and he didntt love her just because she is beautiful, but he loved everything

which she was. In the next stanza, he loved her without knowing where, when or how. so I love

you because I know no other way this shows his deep passion and there was no way to explain

his love it shows his pure love (line 11). Finally, the last part so close that your hand on my

chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep (line 13-14). He felt like he and

his paramour share every part and there was no barrier between their loves.

In conclusion, The symbols of nature like fire, plants and darkness had been used to show

his sense to his lover. Most of Pablo Neruda poems had been written in the mixed of length. In the

first poem the words love quite often. He left a symbol in the last line of each stanza which are

fire, blood and ray. In If you forget me, he also repeated the words if many times which is a

repetition techniques and used the symbols of roots and flower . For the third poems, the phrase
I love comes up repeatedly and the symbol of flowers, plants and darkness has been used. The

similarities of these three poems are mixed of length, depth feeling expressed, repetition literary

device and symbolism.

I do not love you except because I love you

BY PABLO NERUDA

I do not love you except because I love you;

I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;

I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume

My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who

Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

If You Forget Me
BY PABLO NERUDA
I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:

if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,

the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.
One Hundred Love Sonnets: XVII
BY PABLO NERUDA
I dont love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz,

or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:

I love you as one loves certain obscure things,

secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesnt bloom but carries

the light of those flowers, hidden, within itself,

and thanks to your love the tight aroma that arose

from the earth lives dimly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,

I love you directly without problems or pride:

I love you like this because I dont know any other way to love,

except in this form in which I am not nor are you,

so close that your hand upon my chest is mine,

so close that your eyes close with my dreams.
