Chapter 2

1. The chapter opens with the description of the river Sarayu which is the pride of malgudi. We
get pictures of Sarayu at sunset.
2. Mani ans Swami were chilling with their legs dangling in the waters of Sarayu . While doing so
Mani mentions Rajam , who he despises and wishes to bundle him up and throw him into the
deep side of the river.
3. Rajam :
Dressed very well . The only in class who wore socks and shoes
He wore fur cap and tie and a wonderful coat and knickers.
He came to school exactly like a European.
The new power in class and menace to Mani.
Son of a police Superintendent.
Rivalled Mani in courage and bravery .

4. In classroom we see Swaminathan act as a cord of communication between Rajam and Mani .
Mani was passing with messages like ,Are you a man. Rajam was irritated because of this
distraction.
5. This communication on the last bench causes Swami trouble , teacher asks him question which
he fails to answer correctly because of which he has to stand up on the bench.
6. After the class got over ,Mani ,Rajam and Swami head to a secluded spot to speak their minds
out .Swami again acts as a medium. They decide to meet up near the river.
7. Mani is present near the river with his wooden club , along with Swami .Rajam shows up late ,
with a gun and fires ashot in the air.
8. After a small discussion of what they have done to offend each other, all three become friends.
This chapter ends on a sweet note where the trio eat and laugh at the bank of Sarayu.
