NCDPI Offers Flexibility in the Middle School Curriculum
for
Computer Skills and Applications
The curriculum is composed of different instructional modules. LEAs will determine at the local level
which modules and hours of instruction to offer based on local needs. Below are the modules offered at
the eighth grade level during a semester at Ranger Middle School.

Modules Taught

Digital Literacy
Emerging Technologies
Word Processing: Advanced Business Documents
Spreadsheets: Basics and Formulas
Presentation Basics
Presentation Techniques
Career and College Module - CFNC
COMPUTER SKILLS
AND
TECHNOLOGY

CTEs mission is to prepare students to be career and college ready. Middle school teachers are

doing just that by teaching not only computer skills, but also emerging technologies, and digital

literacy.

Technology plays an important part of our everyday world. By having a foundation in these areas,

being challenged to think critically and problem-solve, students will excel in high school and in their

college education and careers.

Technology is emphasized by students designing with Web 2.0 tools and by researching

emerging technologies which includes: 3D printers, internet of things, cloud computing,

wearable technology, learning analytics, tablet and mobile computing, virtual labs and

games, artificial intelligence, drones, organs on chips, autonomous vehicles, nanosensors

and many more. Students create and collaborate using Open Education Resources such as

Moodle, Edmodo, Khan Academy, Creative Commons and others.

STANDARDS
In addition to complying with NCDPI Essential Standards, the Computer Skills and
Applications course also addresses two standards in the Standards for Technological Literacy.

Standard 8 states: students will develop an understanding of the attributes of design. Design
is the first step in making a product or system. Students meet this standard by designing
creative websites, videos, presentations, documents and also when practicing coding.

Standard 17 states: Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use
information and communication technologies. The digital literacy module and modules two and
three meet this standard. Digital literacy provides students with an understanding of
computers, productivity programs, computer security and piracy, digital lifestyles, emerging
technologies and communication methods.

Modules two and three helps students understand the purpose and procedures for developing
a multimedia presentation and how to present and distribute information.

The Microsoft Office Productivity Modules have end-of-course state required test to
assess students learning.
