Craving Savagery

William Golding a British novelist, playwright, and poet. During World War II, he joined

the Royal navy and after World War II. Golding went back to teaching, writing and start to

write Lord of the Flies. The most famous novel of Golding is Lord of the Flies. Lord of the

Flies is the first novel that Golding writes it and publish in 1954. In 1988, he was knighted the

Royal Society of Literature from Elizabeth II. In 2008, Golding was the third of the 50 greatest

British writers since 1945. His inspiration is when he joins the naval. He sees the frightful event

in World War II, the D-Day landing at Normandy and the sinking of the German battleship,

the Bismarck and battles with other ships.

In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the theme of savagery to reveal power. Ralph blows the

conch shell that he ready to have a meeting. Ralph talks with the children with nervous moods

because the fire is out. While the conch in Piggys hand. Jack wants to speak also. He doesnt

have a conch. So, he cant speak, but he doesnt care about the conch and dont think that the

conch is important. Jack push Piggy and he starts talking. Ralph says, Jack! Jack! You havent

got the conch! Let him speak (p. 91). The conch represents the power and the right to speak.

It means that Jack wants to tell his opinion and he tries to get the conch by using savagery to

push Piggy. Jack can do anyway of savagery to push him to be powerful. In the chapter 10, it

divides into two groups are Jack group and Ralph group. As Robert says hes been tied for

hours, waiting (p. 159). Robert says that Jack tells Robert to arrest Wilfred because Jack angry

Wilfred. Then, Robert and Roger have to follow Jacks order. They have to do because they

are scary of Jack savagery. If they dont follow the Jacks order, maybe they can get hurt from

Jack like Wilfred. Jack wants to gain power in order to manage the team and be a leader.

In the Lord of the flies, Golding uses the theme of savagery to reveal evil. In the beginning

the hunter group hunt, the pig for food. The children want to play games about hunting pig.

Robert pretends to be a pig and all the children pretend to be the hunter. The children say Kill

the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Kill the pig! Bash him in! (p. 114). The blood is

representing the evil in their soul. This chatting represents the thing that they want to do and it

makes the children encourage to do it again. Moreover, when Roger tells everyone that he

wants a real pig to play a hunting game and Jack said Use a littlun (p. 115). This situation

shows that Jack dont care about littluns safe. Jack doesnt care anything, he just cares only

his enjoyment and dont care what their feeling that it hurt or not. The children have to use the

evil inside them to survive in the island.

In the Lord of the flies, Golding uses the theme of savagery to reveal weakness. In chapter5,

all the children talking about if we divide into many groups, how can everyone survive on the

island. Everyone has to lean on each other. For example, all the children get food from hunting

group and if dont have Piggys glasses, they wont have a fire to cook. Piggy says I'm scared

of him, and that's why I know him. If you're scared of someone you hate him, but you can't

stop thinking about him. . . (p. 93). Piggy scare of Jacks power because Jack always uses the

violence, Piggy gets hurt from Jack and Jack want Piggys glasses. In the last unit, Jack want

to kill Ralph, Ralph runs away from Jack and see the naval. After the children get the help from

naval. Ralph looks at the island that was scorched up like dead wood-Simon was dead and

Jack. The tear began to flow (p. 202) Ralph thought about the event in the past and the first

time on the island. All the event in the past and it hurt his feeling. He misses his friend's name

is Piggy. The weakness is the emotion when something effect to soul in a negative way.

The theme of Golding use in Lord of the Flies is savagery to reveal crime, fondness, and

puissance. The children have to use the puissance to control everyone and someone are using

the violence to get a puissance like Jack. He pushes Piggy and then talking. Inside everyone,

the evil and selfish are hiding in their soul. They can do any way to survive without care of

other people feel or people safe. They just focus that they have to do everything to survive.

While Jack looks back at the island, he thinks about the past when he stays on the island, he

cries and he misses Piggy.
