1. While servicing of starting motor, why should not be lubricated the commutator?

The brushes and commutator are integral to the normal operation of a D.C. motor. The
armature and the commutator are both mounted on the motor shaft. On each side of the
commutator, a carbon brush carries current from the circuit. When the carbon brushes press against
the commutator, the armature is magnetized and rotates. So if the commutator lubricated during
the service the armature is not magnetized properly.

2. What will happen if the generator belt drive is loose in the engine?
If the belt drive is loose in the engine then it slips and it does not charge the battery. The
engine is will be overheated.

3. Why is a solenoid used in the starting circuit of automobiles?

A starter solenoid is the part of an automobile which switches a large electric current to
the starter motor, in response to a small control current, and which in turn sets the engine in
motion. Its function is thus identical to that of a transistor, but using an electromagnetic solenoid
rather than semiconductor to perform the switching. In many vehicles the solenoid also engages
the starter pinion with the ring gear of the flywheel of an engine.

4. List out the various modern electronic controls which require regular maintenance.
Electronic control unit(ECU)- Modern ECUs sometimes include features such as
AdaptiveCruise control(ACC), Automatic transmission control, Anti-lock brake control, Anti-
theft control, Electronic Speed controller, Traction control, Electronic stability program(ESP) and
various electronic control sensors. etc.

5. Compare positive and negative earthing of electrical system in vehicles.

A positive ground is hooked to anything that may explode or catch fire--as a gas tank on
an automobile--a hot wire connected to the gas tank happens to short out there would be a fire or
explosion ---negative grounds are hooked to appliances and electrical products in order to take the
positive charge to the ground so as not to endanger any one with electrical shock.
Positive earth gives a better spark and less corrosion when insulators leak current.
Negative earth interference is easier to suppress and electronic components are less likely
damaged.
6a.List the various problems and remedies that have to be carried out for a D.C.generator and
Alternator.
6b.Explain different types of tests and preventive maintenance of batteries.
