1.1. Introduction
The Panasonic Digital Multiplex Passenger Entertainment System (DMPES)
IFE system provides broadcast audio to each passenger through a distribu-
tion network. It also delivers overhead video through a distribution system for
broadcast to the passenger. Broadcast service delivers the same media to all
passengers at the same time, allowing the passengers to select only what they
want to hear, much like changing the preset channel on a radio.
Technology
Digital Multiplex Passenger Entertainment System (DMPES) provides major
reductions in weight, size, and power requirements while at the same time
providing increased reliability, passenger servicing, and media storage.

Head-End Subsystem
The IFE head-end subsystem provides an interface for personnel to operate
and control the system. Digital MPES also provides the means to interface the
IFE system with crucial aircraft subsystems, stores entertainment media for ac-
cess by the passenger, stores IFE equipment operating files and data files, and
performs real-time decoding of video and audio sources into the Main Multi-
plexer and video to the Video Distribution Units.
Seat Subsystem
The seat subsystem includes the Seat Electronics Box (SEB) and Passenger
Control Unit (PCU).

that can harm or kill a person.
General Description
The Video Distribution Unit (VDU) provides video signals to cabin overhead
video monitors. VDUs are located in the Overhead.
The VDUs are installed in a single column, with a left and right column.
Typical installations include the Retractable LCD, and the Wall Mounted LCD.
The VDU receives the baseband video inputs from the SC-A.
The VDU switches the commanded signal to each LCD.

The SEB receives the PES data and splits it to send to the next SEB
(or termination plug). It processes internally according to the start-up
configuration data received from the MM.
The MM communicates cabin configuration information to the SEBs on a
different set of data lines.
PSS data
Passenger Service System (PSS) reports configuration and layout data about
cabin seating arrangement, PA zones, video zones, bilingual video tags and
stereo music tags, and skipped PCU channels. Data travels bidirectionally:
- First data travels from the MUX to the first SEB and
then on to the last SEB on that column
- Then it travels from the last SEB on that column to
the first SEB and back to the MUX on the next cycle
