SURAH AL-QARIAH

AYAT 1, 2, 3
Al Qariah
 that which rattles, destroys
 also used when you are in a tough situation
 one of description of Judgement Day. There are many other descriptions for
Judgement Day in the Quran.
 Repeated 3 times in the surah.
 The day of great clash
 Hearts will be rattled out of terror
Qara’ah – one thing strike against another thing
Usage – Qariah alone (one word usage) indicates the urgency

AYAT 4
Farash – moths, bugs attracted to light. People will be like moths. Figurative to show
lots of people around in chaos, scattered in all directions.
Mabsus – division. Judgement day will be a day of gathering. But its one of the days
you will feel most alone. Everyone become separated from each other, individualized.

AYAT 5
I’hn – wool in different textures.
Al-manfush – scraped into fine threads
Mountains which is heavy can be totally scraped to fine particles

AYAT 6
Previous ayat, mountains become weightless. But in this ayat, deeds become heavy.
People usually your good deeds are worthless. But on Judgement Day, Allah reverse
this.
-weight of intentions, sincerity of our deeds. Deeds without iman have zero weight.
-scales in our image will have two sides, but Quran describe it as something else.
-Evil deeds will have no weight. But good deeds will possess weight. Allah makes
deeds worthless by making it weightless.
-Weight of Deeds will be judged on 2 things, how sincere u are and how close it is to
the sunnah

AYAT 7
I’isyah – having a life without worry about food and shelter. Necessity is not a concern.
Radhiyah – the one who is pleased
-A “life” that is “pleased”?
Indicates overjoy, no space for dissatisfaction

AYAT 8
Takhfif – to lighten
On judgement day we want this huge burden of good deeds. But, when you follow
Allah’s commandments, Allah intends to lighten your burden from you in the dunya.
Life becomes easy but your scales become heavy on Judgement Day.

AYAT 9
Hawiyah – “Haawi” comes from “huwa” meaning to fall into a steep canyon
A canyon in hellfire so deep, only Allah know its depth.
Faummuhu – when arabs see someone having terrible calamity, they use a saying
”you look like your mother just fell into a canyon”
-The hellfire is like a mother, hugs the children (people of hellfire) and never let go.

AYAT 10
“Maa”hiyah –

AYAT 11
Allah ask it, Allah answer it
Ends with description about hell fire, the fate of
Haamiyah – “hima” means intensity of lame & fire
From hadeeth, hellfire is 70 times hotter
SURAH STRUCTURE
Allah opens the surah with question and answer, also ends the surah with question
and answer.
