Student Development Theory To Practice Presentation Reflection
practice capstone presentation from Dr. Darren Pierre’s Student Development Theory class. I
believe that this artifact best aligns with the communication skills program learning outcome, but
development theory, the importance of theory, and how I would apply theory to practice for a
specific student population, gearing the presentation to the professional I was assigned. I had the
pleasure of presenting to Dr. Adia Gooden, who is the Staff Psychologist and Coordinator of
Multicultural Outreach and Services at The University of Chicago. Given that I presented this
project to a professional who does not have a student affairs background, it was imperative that I
demonstrated effective written communication skills that provide high levels of clarity,
comprehension, synthesis, critical thinking and analysis so that she understood the content. In
addition, given that I presented this capstone project to a group of my peers and Dr. Gooden, I
believe that this proposal also demonstrates effective oral communication skills, as well as the
ability to facilitate effective intergroup and intragroup relations in professional settings, the
ability to work collegially with diverse constituencies, and the ability to use technology in
the college setting. Through this presentation, it is evident that I understand historical and
contemporary issues within higher education, especially with respect to this student population,
but I also reflect on how U.S. colleges and universities can address these issues. This further
