Volume of 3D Shapes:

Cones, Cylinders, Spheres and Pyramids

Allison Butler
8th Grade Math Intervention

Common Core Standards:

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.
8.G.9 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volumes of cones, cylinders, and
spheres.

Lesson Summary:

In this lesson, students will learn how to classify 3-dimensional shapes, calculate the volume of
cones, cylinders, spheres and apply the information into real life situations. Student will take notes
on key vocabulary terms they need to know for the unit. Students will get whole classroom teaching
to introduce and teach the subject and walk through guided practice on the Smartboard. Students
will also practice together using a scavenger hunt around the room. During small group instruction
time, students can practice problems independently on iPads or Chromebooks or do an enrichment
activity. As a class, students will play Smartboard games to increase fluency in solving volume
problems. Students will do their pre and post assessments on a website called Quizizz, which is a
fun and interactive way to get real time data and for the teacher and students to know exactly where
they stand in mastering the content. Students will then create a creative formula sheet and real-life
scenario/problem and present to their classmates using the Smartboard using Google Slides.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will take about 4-5 hours. The lesson will be divided into 5 50-minute lessons. The
length of the class is 50 minutes, the 10 minutes in the beginning of class will be used as a warm-up
time to practice skills and writing.

Commentary:
The students and I will start with a discussion of vocabulary terms and why we would need this
information in real life using relatable examples such as ice cream cones, globes, a soda can, or a
pool. I believe a challenge will be students recalling prior knowledge or not remembering the
difference between vocabulary words, such as diameter and radius. I also worry about students who
do not grasp the information even after reteaching and small group instruction.
Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:

First 5-10 minutes: Students will come into the classroom, get their math binders out and start
working on their warm-up questions. The warm-up questions are intended to refresh students’
memory and skills on prior lessons we have learned. At this time, I will be walking around checking
last nights’ homework, and checking in and greeting students. We will go over any warm-up or
homework questions that need reviewing or clarifying.
5 Minutes: Pre-assessment on Quizizz (link found in students google classroom). Assure the students
that this quiz is not counted for a grade but as a starting point and to see what we already know.
Project the leaderboard on Smartboard. (review most missed questions later during plan period to
see the most needed instruction). Graph pre-lesson score on students’ mastery charts, these are kept
in their math binders.

5 Minutes: Introductory Volume video

https://youtu.be/TXDJwiUtauw
25 Minutes: After the students have finished their pre-assessment we will move on to the
introduction and note taking portion of the lesson. Students will take notes on a printed sheet with
fill in the blanks and practice problems. The notes will be displayed on the Smartboard, so everyone
can follow along easily. Students will also have the completed note page uploaded to their Google
classroom page in case they missed anything in class or were absent.
Homework: introduce Khan Academy homework for the week. Links to helpful videos and to Khan
academy will be loaded to Google classroom.

Day 2:
First 5- 10 Minutes: Students will come in and get settled, working on their warmup questions
10 Minutes: Review lesson from yesterday. Do this by having students get out their notes and follow
along with definitions review and a sample question on the smart board. Have students practice with
the whole class before moving into group work.
20 Minutes: Students will get into groups (found on google classroom) and work through practice
problems with 3 other group members. Work can be scaffolded if needed. Teacher will be walking
around checking in with groups and answering questions, also taking informal data on students that
may be struggling.
10-15 Minutes: Introduce the Google Slides Project to the class and explain procedure and rubric
expectations. Show an example on the Smartboard. Allow the students to pick 1 partner or work
alone.

Day 3:
First 5 minutes: Warmup and homework questions
5 Minutes: Formative assessment. Ask students to rate their comfort level with the material on a
scale of 1-5. Take mental note of students on a 3 or less to pull for small group and check ins.
3- 15-minute rotations: Students will be split into 3 groups or stations of activities. One group will
be getting small group instruction in sets of 3 to 4 students (this will be decided based on teacher
observation, and students who recognized they were at a 3 or lower in retaining the information).
Another station will be students who are working independently on their Google slides project.
Another group will be working on a paper scavenger hunt around the room, solving problems at
each spot. Scavenger hunt will be placed away from small group instruction, so it is not distracting
to struggling students. A timer will be projected on to the Smartboard, so students can keep track of
the time they have at any station.
Remind students of Google slide and Khan Academy homework. If students do not have internet
access at home, they may work during lunch or recess/gym, or stay after school.

Day 4:
First 5 minutes: Warmup and Homework questions
30 Minutes: Smartboard review game. Students will use a game on the smartboard to solve problems
in a fun way.
20 Minutes: This time will be used to put the finishing touches on Google slide projects and help
students who are struggling. Presentations of Google Slide Projects tomorrow!

Day 5:
First 5 Minutes: This warmup time will be used to make sure presentations and homework are
complete.
35 Minutes: Using a name randomizer app, students will present their Google Slide presentations on
the Smartboard in front of their peers.

10 Minutes: Students will have 10 minutes to take their post assessment on Quizizz. Student will
graph their scores on their mastery chart, showing how much progress they have made. If they have
not showed mastery, they will be given more small group instruction and will be allowed to retake
their quiz to show learning.

Pre-Assessment:
To pre-assess student knowledge, we will take a pre-quiz on the Quizizz website. This quiz will have
prior learning concepts students should know and questions on what the lesson will teach. This will
tell me where I need to start with the students and if re-teaching prior skills is necessary. We will
also use warm up questions as an informal assessment.

Scoring Guidelines:
The warm-up questions will be done as a class for teacher judgment on whether the students
have any knowledge on the topic being covered. The pre-assessment will be logged onto the
students’ mastery chart, so they can see their growth after the lesson is complete. The pre-
assessment quiz will not be used as a grade, but as a way for students and myself to see
where we are starting and how we can grow in knowledge. The data will be exported into an
excel spreadsheet and compared with the post-assessment.

For formative assessment, students will be asked to rate their understanding using a 1-5 scale
displayed in the classroom and shown on fingers. Teacher will take notes on who is displaying a
number of 3 or lower and conference with those students individually or in a small group.

Post-Assessment:
Students will take a post assessment on Quizizz. They will show mastery through a series of
questions on a computer-based quiz. They will graph their post assessment score on their Mastery
Chart (a graph that students use to show growth in their learning by tracking pre and post test
scores). Students will also create a written slide describing key terms and examples of volume of 3D
shapes in everyday life.

Scoring Guidelines:
Students will be expected to show mastery by getting a 70% or above on post assessment.
There will be 10 problems on this quiz. Students will be allowed to retake the quiz if they do
not show proficient the first time. The retake quiz will use different problems. Student slide
shows will be graded using a rubric and students will be expected to earn a 70% or higher on
the slide shows by meeting the rubric criteria.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Students who show mastery will be able to peer tutor other students. Another option for enrichment
is to make artistic and creative formula posters for students to display around the room and school.

Students who are struggling with the material will be pulled for small group instruction during
practice time. These groups will include no more than 3 students for direct re-teaching of material
that was presented to the whole class.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Homework will consist of video review and practice on Khan Academy and real-life examples of 3D
shapes that students will take pictures of and solve using the formulas they have learned, uploading
their pictures and answers into a shared google doc which we will use for review and relearning in
the classroom.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This lesson will be integrated with technology and English language arts. By having the students
present the subject to their peers, they will practice public speech and presentation skills in class
after they have made their slides. The students will be required to write out formulas and definitions
on their slides using the writing and revision process and strengthening their language arts skills.

Additional Notes

It is assumed in this lesson, students already have some previous knowledge of volume and shapes.
We will spend some time reviewing area.

The pre and post bar graph will be used to students can take ownership of their learning and know
what they are expected to learn, and the mastery level expected by the end of the unit. This will be a
simple bar graph that is made with all the units for the year along the x-axis and percentages along
the y-axis. Students will also strengthen their graphing skills.

Students will have a math binder organized by unit where they will keep their math notes,
homework, warmups, and class activities. Students will practice keeping themselves organized and
responsible, skills essential when transitioning to high school from 8th grade.
