Lesson Idea Name: Algebraic Expressions: Assessment (session 5)

Content Area: Mathematics/Algebra/Expressions
Grade Level(s): 6TH grade
Content Standard Addressed:
1st Semester Expressions Unit 3 (Woods, 2016)

MGSE6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

MGSE6.EE.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.

MGSE6.EE.2a Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.

MGSE6.EE.2b Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient,
coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity.

MGSE6.EE.2c Evaluate expressions at specific values for their variables. Include expressions that arise from
formulas in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole number
exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of
Operations).

MGSE6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

MGSE6.EE.4 Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same
number regardless of which value is substituted into them).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot is a great tool to support students leaning development because it allows the teacher to assess the
students understanding of the course content. Kahoot also represents for the lesson a more interactive
delivery of the lesson.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
The lesson will take place in the computer laboratory to ensure that every student have access to the Kahoot
website.
The teacher will start the lesson by giving a brief summary of last session and will introduce the students to
the kahoot website.
The teacher will give general instructions of how to interact with the Kahoot platform.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The activity is planned to last 25 to 30 minutes

 The teacher will provide the students with the game’s PIN and will make sure that everyone registers
properly with the given name or preferred nickname.
 The teacher will run the game and will allow the student to respond to the questions.
 When the assessment if over the teacher will review the questions which at least one student fail.
 The teacher will provide answers to the students’ questions if any

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

How will the data be used?

The data will be used to identify the students understanding of the content area and will be used to identify
students who need a more effective instruction before the test.
The information collected is not going to be shared with parent but will be shared with other teacher as a
resource for planning.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I think this activity can give me information about my students’ performance but not just their performance
but my performance as a teacher. The results of the Kahoot assessment will give me the opportunity to
consider changing my teaching strategies when delivering content.

Reflective Practice:

I think Kahoot is great tool to engage students in the lesson’s content because it is an interactive tool which
give the lesson flexibility. UDL is based on flexible classroom where the need of all students can be reached.
