LAST-MINUTE DECORATING IDEAS

I like to use bunches of rose hips,
berries and spruce tied with ribbon.
If the tree is a little sparse around the
base, huge gift-wrapped boxes placed
at its foot are great gap fillers. When
it comes to dressing the Christmas
table, it’s a case of more is more. Mine
features plenty of candles, silverware and flowers,
and I also decorate it with sculpture, books and urns.
FAIL-SAFE GIFT IDEA Philip Morrow,
morrowsoutfitters.com, has reopened his great-
grandfather’s business, making the best socks ever
for men. For women, I think beautifully scented
drawer liners make a wonderfully old-fashioned gift.
DREAM CHRISTMAS DESTINATION There is
nothing better than being at home in Gloucestershire.
It involves a traditional English Christmas with a
real fire, walks and masses of food. Otherwise, our
family farm in my native South Africa is a great
alternative and a different experience; there’s touch
rugby on the beach, picnics and long walks.
PERFECT CHRISTMAS LUNCH To make the most
of the day, we don’t eat until around 5pm. We have
salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, there is
afternoon tea and the Queen’s speech, and then
the festive meal.
IDEAL HOUSE GIFT I adore the ceramic egg tray
and the wonderful cheeseboards from Waterlane
Collection, waterlanecollection.com.

SOPHIE CONRAN Designer, sophieconran.com.

DREAM CHRISTMAS DESTINATION I love to be at home in the countryside. Delicious aromas waft out of the kitchen
and fill the house and there is always a mishap, like the dog stealing the sausages, but that’s what makes the occasion.
FAIL-SAFE GIFT IDEA For those I know well, I take their passion as inspiration, whether gardening, cooking or a
particular sport. Otherwise, a scented candle is a good option. They always come beautifully packaged, and they are
a small luxury that everyone enjoys receiving.
LAST-MINUTE DECORATING IDEA Fairy lights are perfect for the tree, but I also put them down the middle of the
table, along the mantelpiece and around the bed. That way the bedroom feels lovely and festive when the children come
in on Christmas morning with their stockings.
ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS LUNCH I used to live in Australia where Christmas lunch is traditionally a barbecue,
which is really fun, followed by trifle for pudding.
IDEAL HOUSE GIFT A little hamper or a basket filled with homemade treats makes a thoughtful and personal present.
I like to give granola in jars, mince pies, sloe gin, marmalade and chocolate truffles or spiced oils and chilli paste.

PERFECT PLAYLIST Festive hits by James

Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Bing
Crosby are top of the list.
FAIL-SAFE GIFT IDEA I usually like
to give handmade knives by Laguiole,
made-in-laguiole.co.uk. They are very
beautiful and can be monogrammed too.
DREAM CHRISTMAS DESTINATION
Home in Marylebone. The day includes a very long and loud Christmas lunch
with extended family of all ages and waves of present-opening throughout the
day. After the celebrations, we recover at our tiny Alpine chalet in Verbier, which
can only be reached on foot or by snowmobile. Many hot holiday alternatives
are discussed each year, but the mountains always win out.
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS I’d love a silk or cashmere scarf from
Faliero Sarti, falierosarti.com.
ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS LUNCH Lunch at Sushisamba, sushisamba.
com, at the top of the Heron Tower in London would be great. It feels as though
you have travelled somewhere exotic and far away, and it is always festive.
IDEAL HOUSE GIFT Carl Auböck brass objects (available at Sigmar,
sigmarlondon.com) always make very unique presents.

BRIDIE HALL Interior designer, bridiehall.com.

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS LUNCH As I’m from New Zealand, it would have to be a barbecue,
featuring a stuffed fillet of beef and lots of grilled vegetables.
DREAM CHRISTMAS DESTINATION A couple of years ago, I went to the most beautiful resort
called The Sarojin, sarojin.com, in Khao Lak, Thailand. I would love to revisit that holiday as it would offer
perfect weather, Christmas lunch and carols on the beach, plus spa treatments everyday.
IDEAL HOUSE GIFT I like to give something edible. Making salted caramels at Christmas is a
favourite activity, as it feels really festive. I love to find creative ways to package them beautifully.
LAST-MINUTE DECORATING IDEA Use copious amounts of greenery and candlelight. I plunder
ivy from the garden, stud satsumas with cloves and place candles everywhere. That’s when I wish it
could be Christmas every day.
PERFECT PLAYLIST It has to be Christmas carols by a brass band.
FAIL-SAFE GIFT IDEA I like to give one of the Alphabet brush pots I stock, pentreath-hall.com,
featuring the recipient’s initial. It never fails to raise a smile.

ABIGAIL AHERN

LAST-MINUTE DECORATING IDEA When time is short,

copious amounts of fairy lights and candles always do the
trick. I love clusters of tea lights in metallic or glass holders.
Consider wintry flowers and foliage, too, including mossy
branches, catkins, mistletoe, berries and bunches of herbs
from the garden. It’s a look I love so much that we’ve created
heaps of faux foliage for our new flower collection.
DREAM CHRISTMAS DESTINATION It would be somewhere warm. Soho Beach House
Miami is the coolest hotel, offering delicious food and fabulous ocean views. Heavenly.
PERFECT PLAYLIST Jazz and lounge music is my festive soundtrack, along with French
radio station FIP.
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS After a very busy year, some time off would be a treat.
A log fire slowly burning in the grate and a good book would be ideal.
ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS LUNCH I’m not the biggest lover of turkey. Sometimes, LULU LYTLE
we like to cook Christmas lunch outside on our Big Green Egg barbecue, biggreenegg.co.uk. Interior designer, soane.co.uk.
A huge sea bass roasted on fennel, followed by whiskies around the fire pit is perfect.
FAIL-SAFE GIFT IDEA I like
picking up classic books from John
Sandoe, johnsandoe.com. Museum
gift shops are also a great source
of unusual presents.
DREAM CHRISTMAS
DESTINATION My parents’ house

roaring log fires in every room and my
childhood Christmas rituals can be

BRAISED GREENS

SETTING THE SCENE

Striking the right mood is paramount, as a convivial setting
is just as important as delicious food. You will want your
guests to feel comfortable and cared for, while ensuring
that the evening feels like a very special occasion.
COLOUR SCHEME To give a lighter festive feel, soft
cranberry and blue offer a contemporary twist on the classic
colours of green and red. Metallics on crackers, tableware
and ornaments will bring a touch of seasonal sparkle.
DECORATIVE DETAIL For an easy, relaxed atmosphere,
nothing should be too uniform. Place candles in a variety
of containers, plump for foliage in a plethora of forms,
from floral arrangements to strings of pine cones, and lay
the table with crockery and cutlery in a mix of styles,
including vintage pieces for character. Using the same
colour palette throughout will help to unify the scheme.

An arrangement of flowers and foliage with garlands of fir

and an array of candles, safely contained in elegant storm
lanterns, makes an eye-catching centrepiece for the table.

Flickering candles make a

when it comes to containers:
choose pretty cups and saucers,
terracotta pots or even jam jars
lined with moss. As a finishing

C
hristmas in Joseph and Chloe O’Sullivans’ London home is an
elegant, contemporary affair for them and their young daughters,
Kiera and Ashlyn. While their home has undergone a thoroughly
modern renovation, all memory of the property’s Victorian history
has not been dismissed entirely.
A fire plays in the sitting room grate, as it would have done in the 1850s
when the house was built, while a huge, smartly decorated tree stands in one
corner over presents waiting to be unwrapped and stockings hang from the
mantelpiece. However, thanks to what Joseph calls a “restrained intervention”
by architects Stiff+Trevillion, the interior is now a vision of light-suffused
modernity. Dark parlours have been replaced by open-plan spaces, awkward
half-landings ironed out to create bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms, and
the basement has been extended to house a kitchen and dining area, utility
room, pantry and cloakroom.

BREAKING WITH TRADITION

It is a quintessentially noughties take on the classic townhouse. Not the severely
pared-back, hole-in-the-wall fireplace look of the 1990s, but a setting in which,
as Joseph puts it, the “good architectural bones” of the property have been

details like this achieve the desired effect of modernity with warmth.

SPACE AND LIGHT

On the ground floor, a wall was replaced by a Crittall-style glass screen; its linear
design echoed in the bookshelves of the study behind. On the same floor, the
old guest loo has been removed to allow for the insertion of French windows
that lead to the terrace. Turn around and you find a more gently inclined flight
of stairs leading to the basement. Here, too, an adroit design has brought the
open-plan kitchen and living space to life. In the lean Bulthaup kitchen, white
surfaces contrast with walls made of mellow London stock brick, chosen for its
sympathy with the property’s age. Opposite, another new wall made of gleaming
travertine glides from the kitchen outside into the garden, providing the
desired link between inside and out.
From the garden you step back into the dining area, housed in a new
extension at the back of the house. At Christmas, this is where the O’Sullivan
clan converges for “lunch with all the trimmings”, says Joseph. Family from
Ireland and Korea gather around the simple trestle dining table and so the
traditional Christmas continues, albeit in a 21st-century setting.

W
arming log fires and festive gatherings are standard
fare at Vicky Wormsley’s Hampshire home at
Christmas. “This is definitely a house for entertaining
in,” she says. “The dining room was used as a library
by the previous owners, but a country house such as
this can easily take a formal dining room so we decided to reinstate it.”
Interior designer Vicky and her husband, David, bought the Regency
Gothic former rectory as a fixer-upper five years ago, after falling for
its impressive architecture and lofty ceilings. A number of structural
adjustments were required, but the spacious ground floor layout was
instantly appealing. “The arrangement of the rooms here made a lot of
sense,” says Vicky, “but there was still plenty of work to do. When you’re
renovating your own house, it’s incredibly special. We took our time,
to get it exactly right for us.”
The Wormsleys, who have three teenage children, decided to live in
the property for a year before undertaking any changes. “I always rec-
ommend doing this, if possible,” says Vicky. “It allowed me to understand
how we use and connect with the space.” The balance of the bedrooms,
for instance, was not quite right. An extension to replace a bedroom
that had tumbled down decades ago was one of many improvements
made during the year-long renovation. As well as raising the ceiling in
a dreary corridor, a versatile family room was created from two smaller
spaces. Elsewhere, an external storeroom was absorbed into the prop-
erty resulting in a smart, utilitarian boot room, while upstairs, the
bathrooms were reconfigured to enhance the sense of flow.
Once the structural changes were complete, Vicky set about updating
the interior, starting with layers of sophisticated lighting to offset the
coolness of the north-west-facing rooms. “Behind the scenes, it’s all
rather hi-tech,” she says. “We’ve installed a Lutron control system to
manage the ambience without compromising the integrity of the space.”
The idea of marrying old and new and exploring the nature of contrast

a more stimulating environment for evening use.”
It is in the dining room that Vicky has responded most noticeably
to the elaborate Regency architecture of the house. The generous
proportions and brightness lent themselves to richer, darker tones
with standout fabrics and a glittering crystal chandelier. “I love the
calmness of the sitting room, but this is a livelier space so it needed
striking embellishment. The house would feel a bit blank otherwise.”
The same principle was applied, with a more restrained touch, in the
main bedroom, where the light is naturally rather gloomy. Here, Vicky
opted for textured wallpaper, complemented by a periwinkle blue head-
board and berry-coloured bedding to inject warmth into the scheme.
“Ultimately, I wanted the house to feel comfortable, and for people
to be at ease here,” says Vicky. “The rooms may be large and filled with
impressive furnishings, but the biggest challenge was to make it feel
like home. Thankfully, I think we succeeded.”

T
hirty years ago, when Kit Kemp first squeezed
an improbable amount of pattern and colour into
a 19th-century London townhouse to create the
Dorset Square Hotel, she flew in the face of
conventional decorating wisdom. Her bravura,
however, paid off; not only did her schemes appear to break
the confines of the four walls, they also lifted the spirits
and guests arrived in droves. Today, Kit and her husband, Tim,
work on a bigger scale, creating ebullient interiors for hotels
they build from scratch, most recently the Ham Yard in London
and The Whitby in New York, which opens in autumn 2016.
Experience of period and modern buildings was useful for
Kit’s most recent project – the restoration of a colonial-style
house in Barbados. In its former incarnation the house was,
says Kit, “a much loved home,” but a combination of age and
climate meant that it had to be rebuilt.
Grand old houses in Barbados pose a very different set of
challenges to those of urban hotels in the northern hemisphere.
While the latter tend to look in on themselves, providing their
guests with a haven from the hustle and bustle of city life, the
former reveal themselves to their surroundings, offering both
views and shady respite from the heat.
Nowhere in the rebuilt house is this better exemplified than
in the main terrace, which is open to the elements on three
sides. The decoration has been conceived with its surroundings
in mind. Coral stone walls, terracotta floors, as well as furniture

and lighting made from shells, giant beads and branches,
combine to create a look that is perfectly in tune with the set-
ting. Vibrant linen on the furniture echoes the garden’s lush
vegetation, while the ceiling is painted in a hue that mirrors
the turquoise of the swimming pool and the sea beyond. In the
living room, which also serves as a dining room, the deep coral
pink ceiling reflects the room’s lively floral scheme.
As a designer, Kit is in the privileged position of being able
to work with fabrics and rugs that she has created herself; the
living room is furnished with a number of items that are the
result of her collaborations with Christopher Farr, while in one
of the bedrooms an embroidered fabric she designed for
Chelsea Textiles lends a quirky touch to a headboard.
The house is a brilliant example not just of Kit’s eclecticism,
but also her skill as a curator; on the walls hang paintings by
the Spanish artist Ramiro Fernandez Saus, a set of nine paint-
ings by Breon O’Casey and another by Caroline McAdam Clark.
Although Kit’s style might be predicated on ripping up the
decorating rule book, buried deep within the delightful anarchy
are a few of her own hard and fast principles. Texture – whether
rough stone, weathered materials or walls lined with linen – is
the foundation to every scheme she creates, while chaotic com-
binations are underpinned by symmetrical arrangements and
clean-edged graphics that bring a quiet sense of order.

lavish entertaining
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE PROPERTY? It is an Edwardian
terraced house in west London, which I share with my
partner, Bart Carnahan, and our four-year-old daughter,
Zinzi. Bart’s three older boys visit frequently, so it’s a real
family home. It was in good condition when we bought
it, but it had been extended to one side and the ground
floor was divided into lots of little rooms. We often have
people staying and love to entertain so, while the vertical
space was great, the multi-room layout didn’t suit.

HOW DID YOU ALTER THE ARCHITECTURE? The ground

floor was completely opened up. We moved the central
staircase to one side, enabling us to position the kitchen
in the middle, with a dining area at one end and a large
living space leading to a decked garden at the other. In
most homes, the living room is the first place you enter,
but I felt this space would be better for dining (as it is
used less), leaving the bright, garden-facing room at the
back for relaxing. We also removed a conservatory to
create an “outdoor room” and improve the link between
inside and out. Finally, we left the new structural beams
exposed and introduced skylights and Crittall glazing.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A KITCHEN BY ROUNDHOUSE?

I visited a few companies to research prices and options
but most weren’t willing to stray from their set designs.
By comparison, Roundhouse’s Peter Kandalaft was
open to my ideas and he also has extensive experience

of designing kitchens. When I walked into the Wigmore

Street showroom and spotted a feature that I’d been
coveting – stone worktops running right down to the
floor – it felt like a really good omen.

WHAT INSPIRED THE INITIAL DESIGN? With kitchens,

I always lean towards a simple, contemporary look but
with plenty of character. For this space, my initial thoughts
were focused on how to display my vast array of bowls
and glassware. I’m a slightly obsessive collector of
beautiful dishes and believe that entertaining and eating
are as much about the presentation. I grew up in South
Africa and our farmhouse had a separate larder with

floor-to-ceiling storage and display space on both sides.

I wanted to recreate the idea here, but in a clean, modern
vernacular. I ended up dedicating the wall on one side
of the island unit to a tall glass display cabinet, which is
endlessly interesting and always a talking point.

HOW DID YOU PLAN THE LAYOUT? As the kitchen is

the narrowest space in the room, because of the stairs
to one side, we had to think very carefully about how
to make it work. We settled on a long cooking and
storage run, which allows the extractor to hug the wall,
rather than obstruct the central views. This left room
for a fabulous 3.7m-long island, which incorporates a
breakfast bar, dishwasher, sink and yet more storage.
Being slim and heavily glazed, the display cabinet slots
in neatly, without making the area feel cramped.

ABOVE LEFT Chunky Statuario marble with mitred edges, extending to the floor at both ends,
gives the feature island a modern modular look. ABOVE RIGHT The bar stools add an
industrial note, while their polished wood seats bring an element of warmth to the scheme.
As a family, we use the island
more than the dining table,
to eat and also to work.”

WHICH MATERIALS AND COLOURS DID YOU CHOOSE?

I wanted a black kitchen with white marble surfaces
– glamorous and timeless. The simple cabinets not only
look great but are one of Roundhouse’s more economical
options, which suited our budget. I commissioned the
custom-made handles in forged metal from Peter van
Cronenburg in Belgium – they add a hand-crafted
element that helps to lift the finish. The marble is a
beautiful Statuario. I love natural materials and, as there
was such a large surface to cover on the island, it was
really important to use something stunning.

HOW DID YOU SELECT THE APPLIANCES? The Liebherr

fridge and wine cooler were already here and worked ABOVE AND BELOW It was decided to place the extractor hood against the kitchen wall to afford

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE? This is the main living room in a
two-floor apartment that spans two houses within a Grade I-listed
Georgian crescent in Bath. The room is positioned on the first floor, with
three south-facing windows that overlook the city. The wall behind the
camera lens has two openings that link this space with the kitchen,
giving it a semi open-plan feel.

HOW DID YOU DEVISE THE LAYOUT? Rather than compartmentalise

this long room, I was keen to create a sociable seating arrangement that
used the whole space. I designed a pair of large, clean-lined sofas that
face each other and maximise the length of the room. Instead of a
conventional coffee table, I opted for two upholstered stools, as I felt
the room needed more fabric to soften its grand proportions. The wall
facing the windows is huge, so I added three metal bookshelves that
lend height to the scheme without being bulky – it was crucial that they
were slim enough to allow a passageway to the kitchen. Tying in with
these pieces are a low bookshelf and log store that flank the fireplace.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CHOICE OF COLOURS AND MATERIALS?

To ensure a sense of unity, it was important to narrow down the colour
palette to three or four shades. I usually find that one colour will start
the ball rolling and, in this instance, it was the rusty orange of the striped
cushion fabric. I found some beautiful blue china for the kitchen and
this led me to the living room’s blue-grey tones, which complement the
orange. The large pieces, including the sofas, curtains and rug, are all in
soft neutral shades to ensure a tranquil effect. In the same way that the
FEATURE RACHEL LEEDHAM PHOTOGRAPH ADAM CARTER PHOTOGRAPHY

colour palette has been pared back, I limited the number of materials to
metal, glass and fabrics, such as natural linens and wools.

WHAT ABOUT THE CURTAINS? I wanted to frame the windows beautifully,

so I positioned the poles just beneath the cornice to emphasise their
height. The deep border at the bottom of the curtains is the same grey
linen as the piping on the sofas, which helps to unite the scheme.

HOW IMPORTANT WAS SCALE WHEN CHOOSING THE CHANDELIER?

A large room with high ceilings calls for a substantial piece. I find that
an elevation drawing can help you to envisage how a piece will look in
proportion to the rest of the room. I fell in love with this chandelier
because it is simple yet elegant and the smoked glass adds just the
right amount of glamour.

inhabitant as he grows

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE? This bedroom is located on the

first of two basement levels in a triplex apartment within a new-build
development in Knightsbridge. The building has been cleverly designed
to mitigate any sense of it being below ground, with high ceilings and
deep light wells bringing natural light into the rooms.

WHAT WAS THE DESIGN BRIEF? The bedroom belongs to the clients’
ten-year-old son and they wanted a scheme that would grow with him
and still be relevant in a few years’ time. My approach was to create a
cool, moody backdrop with different tones of grey and to add “younger”
colourful accessories that can easily be changed in the future.

CAN YOU DISCUSS THE DIFFERENT TEXTURES YOU HAVE USED?

Layering is key to my design ethos. I like to keep things simple and
create interest with a variety of textures, which bring their own subtle
patterns to the space. The back wall has been papered in a tactile vinyl
that gives movement to the mid-grey palette. We upholstered the
headboard and bolster cushion in leather, which provides a smooth
contrast to the blue linen cushions. The carpet adds another element,
as it mimics silk and feels luxurious and cosy underfoot.

HOW ABOUT THE DISPLAY AREA? Rather than recess the bed into the
alcove, which would have made it awkward to access, I blocked off
the lower half of the niche and installed a shelf that sits just above the
headboard. This has been used to display photographs, artwork and
decorative letters, which can easily be changed to reflect the child’s
interests as he gets older.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ACCENT COLOURS? We found the vintage Union

Jack at an early stage in the project and it provided the inspiration
for the bold red, white and blue accent colours. The lacquer-fronted
bedside cabinets are a departure from this palette. I like to mix things

up and their orange hue provides a soft tone that is a warmer foil to
the primary colours.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE FINER DETAILS? A scheme like this may
appear understated, but everything has been carefully considered, such
as the stainless-steel straps on the leather headboard, which give it a
masculine edge. For the red bolster cushion, we added zips as a playful
dimension. It is these finishing touches that elevate a simple scheme
to something much more special.

in this ensuite wetroom

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE? This 1930s house in Highgate, north
London, had a tired ensuite shower room, which my clients were keen to
update. They came to see our showroom, on the recommendation of a
friend, after feeling uninspired by a design created by another company.

HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE LAYOUT? Our Blues vanity unit instantly
appealed to my clients thanks to its Art Deco-inspired styling and bold
geometric shape, which they felt would suit the age of their home and
echo the period detailing on the original window in the room. It was the
positioning of the vanity unit as the focal point that dictated the layout of
this compact space.

WHAT ABOUT DEVELOPING THE DESIGN? To create a smart, sleek finish,

we brought the wall behind the vanity unit forward by about 20cm. This
allowed us to recess the mirrored cabinet into the wall, build a niche with
simple glass shelves for storage in the shower area, and conceal the cistern
behind the WC. It also meant that there was no need for ugly boxing of the
soil pipe, which created a neater and more streamlined look.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SHOWER AREA? We replaced the old
quadrant enclosure with a wetroom-style zone, screened by a glass panel.
It has a much more spacious feel and is all on one level, with no bulky
shower tray or awkward doors. The floor is tanked to ensure the area
is watertight, while the walls are protected by wide, double-height
wainscoting-style Lambris tiles, a variation of those behind the vanity.

WHAT ABOUT THE FLOOR TILES? To echo the glamorous elegance of

the Blues vanity unit, we tiled the floor in black and ivory marble mosaics,
FEATURE AMELIA THORPE PHOTOGRAPHS JAKE FITZJONES

which are in keeping with the room’s Art Deco style. Mosaics are ideal in
a wetroom because they can be laid to follow the gradient of the floor as
it slopes gently away to the drain. Larger tiles require lots of cuts, which
can look messy. Plus, the extra grout lines of mosaics create additional
traction, making them less slippery when wet.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE FINISHING TOUCHES? The wall lights, bevelled
mirror of the wall cabinet, black WC seat and chrome-plated brassware
were all chosen to complement the Art Deco theme. They create a cohesive
look that is sympathetic to the period design of the house, with a luxury
finish that’s ideal for an invitingly modern wetroom.

MODERN
CHARM
Strong geometric shapes, a restrained planting
palette and clever design tricks give this north
London garden a chic, contemporary edge
DESIGNER PROFILE Having spent 11 years as a film
set designer, Sara Jane Rothwell retrained in horticulture
and garden design, and set up her award-winning
London design practice in 2002. Spanish horticulturist
and landscape architect JoanMa Roig Ortiz joined in
2012. They designed this scheme together.

WHAT DID THE SPACE LOOK LIKE BEFORE? It was a nice garden, with
mature trees and a lawn, but the client wanted something a little more
exciting. It was essential for the design to include an unimpeded route
between the parking spot at the bottom of the garden and the house.
The car dominated the view from every angle and finding a way to
disguise it proved to be our greatest challenge. The client was also
keen to keep the garden’s sense of maturity, an effect created by the
established trees and some of the shrubs.

HOW DID YOU FULFIL THE BRIEF? We used two key design tricks to
divert the eye away from the car, while also providing easy access
to it. First, we made a path that is on a straight axis, but appears to
be staggered due to the different widths along its length and also
because it is punctuated by yew domes. As a further distraction, we
constructed a feature wall in slate, with an integrated spout that pours
water into a large bowl at one side. Set at a right angle to the end of
path, the wall hides the car from view, while the sound and movement
of the water add another layer of interest. To enhance the overall design,
we used geometric shapes for the path, wall and yew, which lend a
clean, crisp look, and softened the hard landscaping with a lawn and
planting around the mature trees.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PLANTING? The large trees cast dappled
shade over the borders, so this determined our choice of plants. Ferns
and grasses are our stalwarts for shady areas but, as the client does not
like these, we opted for more traditional cottage-style planting, including
Alchemilla mollis, hardy geraniums and Actaea matsumurae and
euphorbia. In the sunnier areas, we used lavender, perennial wallflowers,
penstemons and rosemary – soft herbaceous plants that offset the HOW DID YOU DESIGN THE WATER FEATURE AND IS IT EASY TO

WHAT IS THE BEST WOOD FOR A

SOAP DISH? I’m looking for a wooden
soap dish to sit beside my kitchen sink,
as I’ve broken my last two china ones.
Do you know of any suitable designs?
CP, Wadebridge, Cornwall.

Choose a style that lets water drain away, allowing

the dish and soap to dry after use. Olive wood has
water-repellent properties and rubbing in a little
olive oil occasionally will prevent it from drying
out. An attractive option is the Olive Wood soap
dish, 11x7cm, with drainage holes and rubber feet,
which costs £3.41 from online company D.O.M.
Olive Wood, dom-olive-wood.co.uk. The Dragan in
bamboo, 13x8.5cm, sits the soap on a carved rack
for easy draining and costs £4 from Ikea, 020
3645 0000, ikea.com/gb. Companies that make
natural soaps often offer dishes, too. Try Pure
Thoughts, 01332 757073, purethoughts.co.uk,
which sells the Wooden soap dish in hemu wood
with draining channels, 10x7.5cm, for £3.
