STANDARD MAINTENANCE PRACTICE


CONDENSER, TUBE CLEANING &
DEBRIS FILTER

The purpose of the SMP – Condenser, Tube Cleaning & Debris Filter is to
train and guide maintenance personnel to ensure safe and efficient
maintenance of the system.

Responsibility: Team Leader, MM Main Plant

Details of Hazard Involved
1. Falling from height due to failure of scaffolding
2. Steam burning
3. Electric shock
4. Poor Illumination
5. Lack of oxygen due to confined space.
6. Exposure to high-volume of water due to Failure of CW system
valves/negligence.
Safety Precaution Required

1. Ensure proper lock & Tag of Permit.


2. Use of safety glasses is mandatory with other general PPEs.
3. Spanners are to be secured with rope to avoid falling from height.
4. Sufficient lights at maintenance site are to be provided.
5. Water box & CW inlet & outlet line drains shall be kept open.
6. Scaffolding shall be used as per scaffolding procedure (EM 4/7).
7. 24 Volt bulbs are to be provided in the hot well while cleaning.

8. Put the safety signboard “ CONFINED SPACE – MEN AT WORK ”
near the manhole entry.
9. Compressed air after due purification shall be blown to provide adequate
oxygen to avoid suffocation.

Permit Type: Permit To Work Order / Confined Space Permit.


Permit Approving Authority: Shift in charge (Main Control Room)
Isolation procedure
1. The turbine is to be in tripped condition.
2. The barring gear is to be in stopped condition.
3. The CW inlet, outlet valves to the condenser are to be in closed
condition. Ensure that there is no water coming in the drain valve of the
condenser water box.

WORK INSTRUCTION PROCEDURE


A. Water Fill Test:
1. Take the load of the condenser from the springs to the jack bolts
provided.
2. Isolate all the valves leading to the hot well and then fill water through
the quick filling line by running the hot well make up pump.
3. Open the manhole door of the steam space.
4. See that water is filled up to one metre above the tube nest.
