HISTORY
Kho-Kho is an Indiangame. This game was
originated in Poona, Maharashtra. The
popularity of this game is related with the
development of akharas and vyamshalas in
Maharashtra. HanumanVyayamMandal
Baroda gave this gam a modern form. Akhil
Maharashtra SharirikShikshanMandal was
formed in 1928.This organisation provided a
lot of information provided a lot of help in the
development of thisgame. TheDeccan
Gymkhana arranged a conference in Poona in
which the rules of this game were formed. In
1960, Kho-Kho federation of India was formed.
In this year, the first national Championship
for men’s was organised. In the year 1961, Kho-
Kho championship for women was started. In
the year 1936, during the event of BERLIN
OLYMPICS, one KhoKho Team from Pune
exhibited the salient features of the game of
KhoKho at Berlin which was highly
appreciated by Hitler. Asian KhoKho
Federation (A.K.K.F.) was established in the
year 1987 during 3rdSAF Games, held at
Kolkata, India. The member country was
India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal
and Maldives.
Khokho in India
KHO KHO , ancient game of undivide INDIA,

probably was derived from the different

strategy and tactics of "Kurukshetra" war in

Mahabharta. KHO KHO based on natural

principles of physical development, fosters a

healthy combative spirit of term

understanding.

In the year 1936, during the event of BERLIN

OLYMPICS, one KhoKho Team from Pune

exhibited the salient features of the game of

KhoKho at Berlin. Which was highly

appreciated by Hitler.

Asian KhoKho Federation (A.K.K.F.) was

established in the year 1987 during 3rdSAF

Games, held at Kolkota, India.


The member country was India, Bangladesh,

Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives.

KhoKho made its entry into

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS Arena via

1st ASIAN KHOKHO CHAMPIONSHIP held

at Kolkata, India in 1996, organized by West

Bengal KhoKho Association under the

auspices of KhoKho Federation of India and

SIAN KhoKho Federation on “Tera Flex”

Court at NetajiSubhash Indoor Stadium,

Kolkota, West Bengal, India in a most

beautiful manner. India and Bangladesh were

Winner and Runnerup respectively. The

participants were Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri

Lanka, Nepal and host India.

KhoKho is looking forward for a glorious

entry in International Sports Arena very

soon.

LATEST GENERAL RULES
1. The runner or the chasing is decided by
toss
2. A match consists of two innings of
chasing and defending turns.

3. The captain of chasing side may end the


turn before allotted time.

4. The side that scores more wins a match.

5. When a defender is out, he should enter


the sitting box from the lobby.

6. Incomplete match for unavoidable


reasons should be played in the same
session with the same players and
officials. The score of the completed turn
should be counted. For incomplete turn,
the match will start afresh. The entire
match should be replayed from the
beginning if the incomplete match is not
played in the same session.

BRIEF EXPLANATION
ABOUT SOME SKILLS
1. Givingkho: A chaser must say the word ‘kho’
when he is touching the sitting chaser. It is a
foul if he does not say the word.

2. FakeKho: In such Kho,the chaser pretends to


give kho but actually follows the runner.

3. Taking Direction: After receiving the kho, a


chaser should take his first step out of the cross
lane with care because that step will decide his
direction of move.

4. Tapping: It is touching an active runner by


extending an arm. Tapping should be done
when the runner is o the post while tapping
the body should lean forward and arm should
be extended completely.

5. Trapping: For trapping, the active chaser


should try to bring two or three runners to one
side or towards the post. This situation is
trapping
6. Diving: In this technique, a chaser pounces
on an active runner to touch him
spontaneously. It requires a lot of courage and
practice for being an expert diver.
TERMINOLOGIIES
1. Chaser: The players who sit in the squares
are called chasers

2. Runners: Players who are chased by an


active chaser. He wants to touch at tap them.

3. Active chaser: The player who persuades


runners to put them out

4. Square: It is place for chasers to sit down

5. Fake kho: Pretending to give a kho but


actually he does not to do so.

6. Extra Period: Any period played after end


of a regulation game in order to break a tie

7. Feet out: If both feet of the runner touch the


ground beyond sidelines, the player is given
out.

8. Inning: The nine minutes duration of the


game may be chasing or Running is Inning

9. Free Zone: This is an area where both the


runner and chaser can move in any direction.

Injuries, treatment & Prevention
Common sport injuries related to kho-kho are:

i. Strain in hamstring and thigh


ii. Fracture due to falling

iv. Contusion and abrasion

Ways of preventing injuries:

i. Protective clothing and equipment

iii. Onset of fatigue

KhoKho in School
KhoKho at school is the discipline of education
which involves the culture and teaching
methods of each country. The teacher uses
various elements of khokho in order to
stimulate the coordination, learning & social
development of children of the group or class.

The rules are decided in relation to their


educational interest and it is recommended to
adapt the playing facilities according to
capabilities of children.

Size of playfield /posts can vary depending on


the available space.

Me & my khokho:
Khokho has always been one of my most liked
sports. I alyaws enjoy playing khokho. Being a
student of XII grade it has ot been possible for
me to be a part of akhokho competition but it
is a great stress buster and good pastime.
