I. INTRODUCTION

Plant oils have been very useful in our society for many reasons. Basially, humans have
used crude extracts of different parts of plants as curative agents because they are generally cost-
efficient, economical and easily available (Chanda and Rakholiya, 2013).
According to Guarte(2007), the plant oil processing area of Visayas State university was
established as an extension to the old Crop Processing Building of the Department of Agricultural
Engineering, a part of the Plant Oil Technology Center (POTC) in order to create a more
sustainable production of filtered coconut oil. The area is made in order to conduct experiments
and to enhance the production of plant oil with the aid of the different equipment and tools
available such as hammer mill, oil expellers, filtering tanks, storage tank and many more in the
small-scale oil processing area.
Identifying the different equipment and knowing their function is important in order to
effectively use them and to avoid any accidents in the workplace. The activity entitled Plant Oil
Processing Area in Visayas State University: Equipment and its Functions aims to recognize the
different technologies used in the area, and identify its functions in order to understand the
significance of plant oil technology and the role it plays in the society.

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the laboratory class, the students should be able to:

LO1: Recognize the different equipment found in the Plant Oil Processing Area.
LO2: Explain the functions of the different equipment.
LO3: Understand the significance of the Plant Oil Technology and the role it plays in our
society.

B. Methods

First, the students went to the Department of Agriculture and asked for anapproval
to surveythe Plant Oil Processing Area. After that, the students went to the area and
looked for Mr. LitoPernito. The students told Mr. about their activity, and asked him if
he could tour the students around the area. Then, the students interviewed Mr.
regarding the different equipment found in the area, its names and functions. Lastly, he
gave the students additional information in relation to plant oil processing.

IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The students were able to recognize the different equipment found in the Plant Oil
Processing Area, and were able to identify the functions of these machines after being shown
around the area by Mr. LitoPernito. The equipment present were:

Furthermore, the students learned that plant oil are extracted from seeds of fairly common
plants and crops such as corn, palm, trees, coconut, etc.. The seeds would then be processed
using machines, allowing natural oil found in the seeds to be extracted. The extracted oil would
then be either stored or further processed into other sources of biomass energy such as biodiesel.

V. LIFELONG LEARNING

Presented here are the individual lifelong learnings of the group members:
 Gonzaga, Jason R.

The survey at the Plant Oil Processing Area made the students realize that the
agricultural engineering field is important for it innovates and creates materials that are
beneficial to the society and is good for the environment. Also, the survey showed that with
the use of renewable sources in creating agriculture-based products, it is possible to
improve people’s way of living by spending less because these products are proven to be
cost-efficient and greatly effective. Furthermore, this encourages the agricultural and
biosystems students to seek more knowledge, never stop researching, try creating and
innovating useful material because agriculture has a lot more things to offer, not just foods,
fuel and shelter.

 Jimenez, April Joy C.

Through visiting Plant Oil Processing area, the students was enlighten on how to
innovate agricultural technologies to help the people easily do their work and at the same
time, has a way more better output. Learning these new kind of technologies enables the
students to be more motivated and innovative in the long process that enables them to
help others in the future.

 Nayre, Berlie Mae P.

Modern technologies are evolving from generation to generation, in terms of Plant

Oil Processing Area the development of different devices and machines need further
research and comprehensive studies in order to come up well-functional tools. It will polish
the ideas and capacities of the students, in fact that facilities and equipment are need in
this society.

 Quintero, Myles A.
As the group conducted a study in which they were assigned to visit the Oil
Processing Area at Visayas State University, they were able to accumulate the different
ideas and methods in performing the processing methods and quality of the oil. For further
development and upgrading of the industry, oil processing has been a huge contributor in
boosting the marketing both locally and internationally.Furthermore, Plant oil processing
Area helps the students to be more knowledgeable especially in the field of Agricultural
Engineering

 Rojas, Alissa Grace L.

As the students visited the Plant Oil Processing Area, they had gained some
valuable points that must be acquired. The students realized that with the use of these
technologies it enables to successfully help people increase their productivity, efficiency
and equipment utilization. Through Plant Oil Processing Area, people can gain full access
to industry expertise and application engineering resources to increase throughput, shorten
production lead times and boost profitability.

 Van Steenhuyse, Tylo Junior L

The knowledge gained from this facility is invaluable. Having the knowledge to
produce sources of renewable offer students the chance to further improve, research, and
innovate in these areas. Wit non-renewable energy sources slowly depleting, the world
looks for alternative sources, where agricultural and biosystems engineers would lead the
way. Having the capabilities and skills to produce different sources of energy like plant oil
provides with the edge required to succeed and lead in this area of profession.
