Legend of the Dwarf

Many hundreds of years ago, there lived an old woman, all alone in a tiny hut. She had no children, and no
one to ask after her. The old woman would weep night and day for a child, but of course, with no result. One
day she took an egg, wrapped it carefully in cotton cloth, and put it in a corner of her hut. Night and day the
old woman looked after the egg, in the hope that maybe it would give her a child. But nothing happened, and
every day the old woman grew more and more unhappy.
One morning, as she went to look at the egg, she found that it had broken – and in its shell sat the tiniest,
loveliest baby boy that any-one could imagine. The baby saw the old woman and smiled and held out its tiny
arms. The old woman was delighted – here at last was the child she had wanted for so long.
The old woman loved the child dearly, and looked after it so carefully and so well, that by the time it was a
year old it could walk and talk as well as any grown up. But for some strange reason, no one knows what, the
baby stopped growing. He remained as tiny as a one-year old for the rest of his life. He began to be called the
“Dwarf”.
The old woman did not care. She still loved the baby devotedly. “You will be a great king one day, my child,”
she told him, sure that the baby was destined for great things. One day the old woman said to the Dwarf, “Go
to the king‟s palace, my son, and challenge him to test his strength against yours.” The Dwarf protested. “How
can I challenge the king, mother?” he said horrified. “He is greater and much stronger than I.” But the old
woman insisted, and the Dwarf was forced to do as she said.
The king smiled at the child‟s challenge, and asked him to lift a heavy stone. The Dwarf went weeping to the
old woman. “How can I lift that heavy stone?” he asked. “If the king can lift it, so can you,” said the old

In the science experiment, we will make a minia-ture bolt of lightning using a balloon, piece of wool, and
some metal. We will explore static electricity and what causes lightning. We will learn about electrons, atoms,
positive, and nega-tive charges.
What to do:
(1) blow up the balloons
(2) turn off the light in a room at night and get it as dark as possible
(3) rub the balloon rapidly against a piece of wool or wool sweater several times. This will give the balloons
a negative charge as elec-trons jump from the wool to the balloon. When rubbing the wool against the balloon,
we are creating static electricity and saving it up in the balloon
(4) move the balloon close to something metal like a filing cabinet or a door knob
(5) Watch for a flash or spark that jumps from the balloon to the metal object just like light-ning
Please note: the humidity in the air can affect static electricity. If the air is damp, such as during the winter,
then this experiment may not work

13. Why is the experiment carried out?

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about an article in last Monday's newspaper, “Schools fail low-income children.” As
the Head teacher of one of the largest junior highs I feel strongly that the article does not describe our school.
My school has children from many different economic backgrounds, but a large percentage some from lower-
income families. Nevertheless, our tests show that the children do well and benefit from the excellent work
our teachers do. Last year, our school moved from 24th to 5th place according to the official assessment by
the state government. This clearly is not the „failure" that the article suggests.
I would be strongly recommend that more careful research should be conducted in the future so that the
newspaper will more realisti-cally describe the true situation in our school.

Lately, concerns have arisen that Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and it‟s immediate surroundings are
threatened to experience a clean water crisis by 2025. Clean water, which is produced by two private operators-
PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) and Aetra Air Jakarta- currently totals 18,7 m3 per second. However, by 2025,
demand for clean water will reach 41,3 m3 per second as the population of Jakarta is estimated to grow to
14,6 million people from 9,6 million currently (the unofficial figure is possibly much higher).
It has been reported that city-owned pro-perty developer Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) and city-owned
developer Pembangunan Jaya will acquire a combined 100 percent stake in Palyja. If the Jakarta
administration has a direct stake in the city water operators, it will increase public supervision on the local
clean water industry.
PAM Lyonnaise Jaya, which manages the clean water supply in the west side of Jakarta, is a private water
operator that is partly controlled by Astra International through it‟s subsidiary Astratel Nusantara. Palyja has
been active in Jakarta for about 16 years. However, last year a law suit was filed demanding that the court will
annul the agreement between city water operator PAM Jaya and Palyja and Aetra Air Jakarta (Aetra) claiming
that public access to affordable clean water has been hindered.

Rain always comes from clouds. But where do clouds come from? How does all that water get into the sky?
Think about your bathroom. There is hot water in your bath. Steam goes up from the hot water. The steam
makes small clouds in the bath-room. These warm clouds meet the cold walls and windows, and then we see
small drops of water on the walls and windows.
The world is like your bathroom. The water in the oceans is warm when the sun shines on it. Some of this
water goes up into the sky and makes clouds. The wind carries the clouds for hundreds of kilometres. Then
the clouds meet cold air in the sky, and we see drops of water. The drops of water are rain.
The rain falls and runs into rivers. Rivers run into oceans. And the water from oceans makes clouds and more

California wildfires have destroyed more than 1,000 homes
(CNN)One person died and 10 homes burned in a fire that started Saturday in California's Carmel Valley south
of Monterey, fire officials said. Two nearby communities are under evacuation as the fire has burned 1,200

“Almost Is Never Enough”

(with Nathan Sykes)
I'd like to say we gave it a try
I'd like to blame it all on life
Maybe we just weren't right, but that's a lie, that's a lie
And we can deny it as much as we want
But in time our feelings will show
'Cause sooner or later
We'll wonder why we gave up
The truth is everyone knows
Almost, almost is never enough
So close to being in love
If I would have known that you wanted me the way I wanted you
Then maybe we wouldn't be two worlds apart
But right here in each others arms
And we almost, we almost knew what love was
But almost is never enough

Everybody likes home sweet home however making office at home is possible and recommended. Of course
home office will have both advantage and disadvantage. Therefore it is wise to consider the strengths and
weaknesses to have a home office.
Some people will agree that having an office at home will make benefit. It saves time. We need no commuting
which occasionally takes a long time. Besides we are free to set the work schedule. Having home office will
save money as we need not to purchase or lease of office space from rent companies. What make it more
flexible is that we can set part or all parts of our home just as a real office. What we need is only a wireless
router to cover all parts of our house with Internet.
We can run our business wherever part of house we want, from living room, bed room, veranda, etc even we
can make sales or purchases by online shopping for things we need. Furthermore working at home might
reduce stress, effort and time and divert it to other more productive things because while working, we are
close to our families.
However making home as office also has some disadvantages. For some people, keeping the schedule is hard
in flexible time. Such people type wills harder if they are working just from home. There will no clear border
between working and breaking. Working just from home also reduces the possibility to meet new people. It is
true that computer and Internet connection possibly relate people every time and everywhere but we will
interact with them in a dimension which is not real face.
So considering carefully what we actually need in running our business is much recommended before choosing
to have office at home or not.

Last night I caught “Eclipse” on PPV TV and a sillier, more inane movie I’ve never watched in ages. The back
stories add nothing to the plot, Kristen Stewart is even more irritating if that’s possible, and the whole
“triangle” between Bella, Jacob and Edward is such a farce I couldn’t help laughing. There is no triangle to
speak of, actually; only Jake’s inability to accept no for an answer. There were two things I liked about this
film: one was the new actress who plays Victoria, and the other was Edward’s touching explanation of why
he insists on no sex before marriage: he wants to re-live the oldfashioned way of courtship he was cheated of
when he was made a vampire. Kind of sweet, when you think about it.
Taken as a whole, however, “Eclipse” adds up to two hours of nothing. Even the intrusion of the evil Volturi
toward the movie’s end seems more like an afterthought tacked onto the story. “Twilight” and “New Moon”
still occupy a place on my crappy movies you can’t help watching list, but “Eclipse” has earned a spoy on my
other list of crappy movies I don’t care if I never wtch again.

38. What does the writer think about the movie?

A. it’s not an interesting movie
B. the movie last too long
C. the writer wants to watch again
D. the plot was in a good sequence
E. it’s kind of sweet memories
39. What is the good thing about the movie according to the writer?
A. the back stories and the plot
B. a triangle speak between Bella, Jacob, Edward
C. the intrusion of the evil Volturi toward the movie’s end
D. when Edward became Jake’s friend
E. Edward’s explanation on no sex before marriage

40. … and the other was Edward’s touching explanation of why he insist on no sex before marriage. The
underlined words means:
A. need
B. enforce
C. challenge
D. approve
E. agree
