1 – PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method statement is to outline the procedures and methodology to be
followed during the execution of Screed concrete for floor finishing at The Heart of Europe. J
K Bauen reserves their rights to amend this method statement according to specific site
conditions. Amendments will be submitted to the Engineer for approval prior to
implementation at site.

2 – SCOPE
The scope of this Method statement is to describe the methodology that will be used for the
installation of Screed concrete for floor finishing in The Heart of Europe project. And to give
all parties involved an understanding of the sequence of work’s, risks involved and control
measures to be adopted during the activity. It explains and provides information concerning
the materials, equipment, tools, manpower and methods of application to ensure
compliance with approved shop drawings, contract requirements, technical specification
and quality standards.

5 RESPONSIBILITIES
• Project Manager (PM)
Responsible for overall design integrity, approval, resourcing and meeting program
milestones while maintaining high quality finishes as required by the contract and Project.
Responsible for the implementation of the Method Statement and Risk Assessment,
Environmental Management System, Impact & Registers. The PM may delegate/assign
duties to others on the Project team to ensure the safety program is properly implemented
but he has to maintain the ultimate responsibility for the Project safety performance. All
reasonable support will be given in this respect from the head office staff.

• Construction Manager (CM)


Responsible for programming all installation aspects and ensures that the partitions are
installed to specification and complies with manufacturer’s standards, project requirements,
labour allocations, etc. Monitoring all sub-contractors work closely to ensure the safety of
the work is as per specification and is completed on time. Review of short-term planning
and advising the PM on any problems. Conducting daily meetings with site staff to organize
work for the day/next day.

• Site Engineer
Responsible for issuing of materials to site planning daily works as directed by the
Construction Manager. Checking of the works on an ongoing basis from initial set out to
final handover. To notify the Site QC and/or the Project QC when works are ready for
inspection. To check all drawings for compliance, prior to distribution and installation of the
works.

• Site Foreman/Construction Foreman


Responsible for setting-out and installation of the blockwork as directed by any or all of the
above. Ensuring quality of product and program compliance at all times. To ensure that pre-
installation/start-up meetings are held prior to commencement of any and all new works
taking place in site.

• Quality Controller
Responsible for checking and ensuring that the works in progress are within specification
and according to Project set standards. To liaise with the Client on quality issues with
regards to the works in progress. Conduct quality inspections with the Client on an ongoing
basis, as per agreed inspection procedure.

• Safety Engineer/Officer

HSE Officer appointed for supervising the subject activities shall be SARS qualified from
Trakhees-EHS. Responsible for implementing Project Safety Plan and responsible for daily
site inspections. Conduct safety induction for all new employees and subcontractors.
Conduct tool box talk training. Ensure employees and subcontractors operate in safe
manner and comply with the Project safety policy. Carry out regular and random inspections
on all sites and record results. Record and compile safety statistics. Maintain the necessary
safety related records. Implement safe systems of work for the Project. Investigate into site
accidents and analyses causes and associated corrective and preventive actions. Ensure high
standards of housekeeping at all times.

6 EQUIPMENT/ TOOL/MANPOWER/MANPOWER.

6.1 Equipments/Tools

• Hand-tools {plumb bob, Right Angle, Steel Trowel, Threads (Line Dori), Hand Shovel,
Hammer, Aluminum Profile 3m length, Bucket Etc.}
• Power Float
• Grinder Cutter

• Water Tank/Hose for curing
• Survey Equipments
• Personnel Protective Equipments

6.2 Safety Equipment


All necessary PPE and safety gear will be worn at all times during the
execution/Application of Readymix Plaster, in full compliance with safety requirements.
• Helmets/ Hard cap, Safety spectacles/goggles and Filter masks
• Safety Shoes
• Hand Gloves
• Safety Signs
• Barriers

Safety checks will be made prior to commencement of work in order to ensure that
materials and equipment’s are in safe working order in accordance with project and site
regulations.

6.4 Manpower
• Construction Manager

• Skilled Manpower as required (Foreman, Masons, Carpenters & Helpers)
• Surveyor

6.5 MATERIALS
All neccessary materials including but not limited to the following
• Readymix Concrete - MAR (C20/10 OPC and C20/10 SRC)
• Curing Compound
• Potable Water
• Polyethylene sheets
• Hessian Cloths

7 PROCEDURE

7.1 Precommencement Requirements :


• An approval shall be obtained for all the activities pertaining to the Application of
Readymix Plaster from the company/End User at least 24 hours in advance prior to
the actual work.
• The procedure shall be in accordance with the project specification manufacturers,
recommendations, approved drawings, QCP, ITP and programme requirement by
Project/Construction Manager to decide areas of concern prior to starting work.
• Work to be carried out only by the trained personnels.
• Material Verification Request (MVR) shall be submitted on delivery of materials at
site.
• Company and Trakhees waste management guidelines shall be adhered in disposing
all the waste.
• All moving equipment will be operated and maintained by properly trained

• Operators Identify and maintain proper access road without interfering with any of
the Hospital activity.
• All survey instruments shall be calibrated by the approved agency.
• Work place shall be cleaned/cleared from all other unwanted materials and debris
prior to start work.
• MEP Clearance shall be obtained from company/Consultant prior to start any activity
for floor screed.

7.2 Surface Preparation

• Before commencing Screed Concrete, relevant approval of drawings well-


coordinated with the size and location of Electro-Mechanical services/conduits shall
be taken.
• The Concrete Slab Surface to receive the screed must be cleaned of any loose
material or of substance, which may impair the work.
• Minor repairs to concrete shall be treated by approved material and according to
approved method statement.
• Concrete Surface shall be hacked properly and loose concrete shall be removed from
the area.
• Surface shall be moisten with free water prior to pouring screed The surface shall be
saturated surface dry avoiding soaking with water.
• Remove any ridges and traces of form oil or release agents.
• Before screed, insure that adjacent finish work(if any) is well protected with Kraft
paper, joints lapped, and sealed with tape.
• The area shall be devided in bays and alternate bays shall be poured screed
providing construction joints.
• Required shuttering shall be completed for the bays.
• Final level of screed shall be provided by Surveyor.
• Level Dabs shall be provided with cement sand mortar.
• The area shall be cleaned thoroughly.
• ITR shall be submitted to COMPANY after completing surface preparation for the
approval to proceed the work.

7.3 Screed Concrete

• MEP Services, Conduits, etc. if ny, shall be laid in the area and approval shall be
taken from COMPANY’s MEP Engineers.

• Adequate arrangement shall be made for access/egress of concrete trucks and


placement of the concrete.
• ITR shall be submitted to COMPANY for approval prior to start pouring screed
• Immediately prior to laying the screed, a thin brush coat of cement slurry/Nitobond
SBR should be applied to the damp surface of the base concrete and well scrubbed
in.
• Any comments from Consultant shall be implemented immediately before pouring
screed.
• The following QA/QC procedures shall be implemented at the time of screeding :
• The ambient Temperature shall be checked, it should not exceed 380C at the time of
concreting.
• Temperature & Slump of concrete from each truck shall be checked. The
temperature of concrete should not be more than 300C and slump test result should
be as per approved design mix.
• Delivery note of each truck shall be checked for its loading time, water/cement ratio
and correctness of concrete grade/mix. The time from loading to pouring completion
should not exceed 2 hours.
• All above checks shall be recorded.
• Adequate nos. of Cube samples shall be taken as per Consultants advise for testing.

7.4 Screed shall be placed ensuring the followings:

• There is no leakage of cement slurry from formwork joints.


• Covers to the conduits are not disturbed.
• Support system to sides of element are firm and not disturbed at the time of
concreting
• Imbedded MEP services are firm and not disturbed during pouring concrete.
• The scredd shall be compacted well using poker vibrators and experienced operators
will be used to ensure proper compaction of concrete.
• Particular attention shall be paid to bay edges and corners to ensure full compaction
of the base Concrete.
• Final very smooth finishing of the floor shall be obtained by using Power float and
shall be carried out when the floor has stiffened sufficiently so that damage will not
be caused
• As soon as each bay is completed, it must be covered with Polythene sheets and
• subsequently complete floor shall be cured by pounding the finished floor with
water.
• The curing should continue for not less than 4 days.
