1. The excerpt of the novel immediately locates the setting. Look up “Pikit, Cotabato” on the
internet and cut out a map showing where it is located. Paste it in the space provided.

3. The excerpt also provides an impression of Zamboanga, where Alberto came from. A

5. By way of inference, why was violence the constant element in the way the Moro responded
to “external presence?
- There was constant violence in the way the Moro responded to “external presence” because they
take care of their own culture and much as possible they want to preserve it.

7. What do you think does the character of Datu Mantel suggest about locality?
- For me the character of Datu Mantel that suggest about the locality of Pikit is about the
conservation of their culture. Also, Datu Mantel shows that the Moro will fight for their people. It
clearly shows, He watched in the Movie House that shows the movie of Fernando Poe Jr. In the
movie, FPJ killed a native or a Moro so Datu Mantel got triggered so what he did was took his gun
and shoot the movie house because he was offended by the movie.

10. In 2003, Pikit, Cotabato made headlines because of a so – called war between Muslim
separatists and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Do some research on this event and use
this as a context for the story in answering the question: What can you say about the situation
of Muslims in Mindanao, then and now?
- After reading about the Battle of the Buliok Complex which took place on February 11, 2003 in
the provinces of the Maguindanao and Cotabato in Mindao. The muslims until now are still battling
against the Armed Forces of the Philippines to take their land. And give results to the exchange
widely – casualties in both sides. The thing that I can say about this situation is that this problem
will not be solved unless All of us will respect each other. Because we are still Filipinos. We
should not against with each other but to help each other to make our Country prosper.
