Food and Nutrition

Ashlee Moran is a senior in the School of Human Sciences majoring in Food and Nutrition (non-dietetics) with a
minor in communications. She plans to pursue a career in food journalism upon graduation in May of 2009. This
summer she did a full-time internship at The Daily Sentinel as a feature writer with a focus on food. Moran covered
many events related to The Texas Blueberry Festival and wrote feature stories on community supported
agriculture, health benefits of blueberries, National Dairy Month and canning at home. Two articles by Moran that high-
lighted SFA— SFA students excavate Durst-Taylor House and SFA names new AARC director—were featured on the
SFA homepage with a link to the story. During her internship, Moran also gained valuable experience by learning all
aspects of a newsroom and its daily operation. Moran learned to cover a “beat” when a reporter unexpectedly left the
newsroom. She covered the country beat during an intense time when the commissioners court was compiling a
county-wide budget for the 2008-2009 year.
The School of Human Sciences and the Food and Nutrition program are very proud of Ashlee’s success this sum-
mer and looking forward to more students pursuing this track.

London Through the Ages

Twenty-six students and faculty traveled to England May
12-26 to study firsthand the varied architecture and interiors of
England. The 23 sites visited represented 400 years of period
style beginning with the study of Egyptian, Grecian, and Roman
artifacts in the British Museum of Art and progressing to a tour
of the post-modern City Hall of London.
Prior to each site visit, students presented individual
reports on the architectural significance of the structure. Once
inside the building, students analyzed the furniture, furnishings,
