INDUSTRY PROFILE

Automotive brakes have evolved from simple wooden brakes which were used in
steel rimmed wheels, to modern day’s disc and drum with electronic assistance. The key
function of brakes in automobiles is to slow down or stop the vehicle in motion. The majority
of the brakes used are about friction type, in which the brakes use friction to slow down the
vehicle. In this, the brakes convert the kinetic energy of the moving wheel to heat energy via
friction, which is then dissipated into the atmosphere.

Apart from friction, another type of brake is electromagnetic or electro-mechanical brakes.

The uses electromagnetic force to apply mechanical resistance. The electromagnetic brakes
are popularly used in trains. He however, recent designs are increased the possibility of using
electromagnetic brakes in air craft to reduce the wear and tear on the tires with regenerating
brakes (energy recovery mechanism).

As discussed earlier the majority of the automobile use friction brakes, the scope of this study is
confined to disc and drum brakes, which are two types of friction brakes. In drum brakes friction
is causes by brake show, whereas in disc brake the friction material is called as brake pads. In
addition to the key function of slowing down the vehicle (declaration), the automotive brakes also
deal with absorption of kinetic energy. The modern brakes are associated with electronic
assistance and hence, known as an electronic brake system (EBS) as a whole an EBS is
composed of any of the function such as anti-brake system (ABS), electronic stability
program (ESP), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), traction control system (TCS) etc.
with all this electronic assistance function, modern automotive brakes are not limited to
deceleration only, but they also play an important role in driver assistance and safety.
Increasing nation & international regulation towards vehicle safety, regulations for vehicle
stopping distance, and changing customer orientation in the direction of personal safety
would upsurge the overall demand of automotive brake at the promising rate in the future.
Hence, may technological developments pertaining to cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the
automotive brakes can be expected in subsequence in five year.
Automotive brake system market by geography, brakes type (disc, drum), vehicle type
(passenger cars light &heavy commercial two- wheelers) & technology (electronically
assisted &other) – global trends & forecast to 2018” defines and segments the automotive
brakes market with analysis and forecasting of the global volume and revenue. The
automotive brakes market is predicted to grow to $28532 million by 2018, as compare to
$20210 billion in 2013, with a CAGR of 7.14% from 2013 to 2018”. In this drum brake are
expected to occupy the major share when compared to disc brake system during the next five
years. However the demand for disc brakes is estimated to increase at a faster rate and disc
brake forecasted to slowly surpass the drum brake market.

Asia- pacific: the leading market for automotive brakes:

In the year 2013 Asia – pacific region is estimated to the largest market for the
automotive brakes and would remain the top consumer till the year 2018. The European
market would be the second largest consume for automotive brake in the year 2013 whereas;
north America is expected to be the third largest automotive brake in the year 2018; however,
demand for automotive brakes in Asia Pacific and north American region is estimated to
grow at faster rate than in the European region.

EBS: gaining market share in the brake industry:

Considering the automotive brake demand by technology (electronic brake system and
non-electronic brake system vehicle), the vehicle with electronic brake assistance system (EVS
vehicle) are estimated it constitute gain the market share over the vehicle with no electron brake
assistance in next five years. The reason such as increasing safety regulations, changing by
buyer preference towards safer and luxurious cars, zest to provide more advance features in
an automobile. Due to inter-company completion of completion of automobile manufactures
etc. are influencing the demand for electronically assisted brakes.
Disc brakes to go beyond drum brake marketing the next few years:

The growing cancers over vehicle & passenger safety, stringent environmental &
safety regulation and advantage of disc brakes over drum bakes have made the companies to
consider disc brake in all vehicle segments. Disc brake technology as better heat dissipation
efficacy, light weight more effectively in all- weather condition and lesser stopping distance
hence they are consider more reliable then drum brakes and all these benefits can be availed
with not much additional cost. Due to all aforesaid reason disc brake have already started
gaining a significant market share over drum brake across the regions. However, penetration
of disc brakes in the commercial vehicle segment is limited in the European region only,
whereas other regions prefer disc brakes in the passenger vehicle segment only.
