Palm Sunday Liturgy - Cycle C Year I

On this day the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish his
paschal Mystery. Accordingly, the memorial of this event is included in every Mass, with
the procession or the solemn entrance before the principal Mass, and with the simple
entrance before the other Masses. The solemn entrance (but not the procession) may be
repeated before one other Mass that is usually well attended.
The priest and ministers put on red vestments for mass and go to the place where the
people have assembled. The priest may wear a cope instead of a chasuble; in this case he
removes the cope after the procession.
Meanwhile, the following antiphon or any other appropriate song is sung.
The priest then greats the people in the usual way and gives a brief introduction,
inviting them to take a full part in the celebration. He may use these or similar:

The priest sprinkles the branches with holy water in silence.
Then the account of the Lord’s entrance is proclaimed from one of the four
gospels. This is done in the usual way, or, if there is no deacon, by the priest.

The procession to the Church where Mass will be celebrated then begins. If the
incense is used, the thurifer goes first with a lighted censer, followed by the
cross-bearer (with the cross suitably decorated) between two minsters with
lighted candles, then the priest with ministers, and finally the congregation
carrying branches.

During the procession, the choir and people sing the following or other
appropriate songs:
When the priest comes to the altar he venerates it and may also incense it. Then
he goes to his chair (removes the cope and puts on the chasuble) and prays
immediately the KARARAG TI GIMONG, of the Mass, which concludes the
procession. Mass then continues in the usual way.

The Passion is read by the deacon or, if there is no deacon, by the priest. It may
also be read by lay leaders, with the part of Christ, if possible, reserved to the
priest. It is proclaimed without candles or incense. The greeting and signs of the
cross are omitted. Only a deacon asks the blessing before the passion, as he does
before the passion, as he does before the gospel.

When all this has been done, the Offertory Chant begins. Meanwhile, the
ministers place the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall, and the Missal
on the altar.
The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it
slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end,
the people may acclaim:

All pray in silence with the Priest for a while, unless silence has just been
observed. Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer after
Communion, at the end of which the people acclaim:

If they are necessary, any brief announcements to the people follow here.
Then the dismissal takes place. The Priest, facing the people and extending his
hands, says:
