Issue: Is Video Gaming Good or Bad?

By: Philip Adrian Miranda

Video games have been around since the early 1970s. The first commercial arcade video game, Computer Space
by Nutting Associates, was introduced in 1971. In 1972, Atari introduced Pong to the arcades. An interesting
item to note is that Atari was formed by Nolan Bushnell, the man who developed Computer Space. He left
Nutting Associates to found Atari, which then produced Pong, the first truly successful commercial arcade
video game. Video games nowadays are considered as a bad influence to the youth. This has been an issue ever
since the infamous Columbine shootings in 1999, violent video games and their effects on people have become
an often discussed and highly controversial topic. There have been other highly-publicized shootings linked to
violent video games and many studies have been conducted on this topic. However, the connection between
violent video games and real-life aggression is still far from conclusive, and therefore we cannot assume that
violent video games promote real-life violence and aggression in general. Do you have a die-hard video game
fan at home? Are you noticing changes in his behaviour lately? Is his school performance going down because
of his video game addiction? Or rather is video game good or bad? Specially to every teenager. Video gaming is
an activity which allows a person to be someone or something else in a different world at the tip of our finger, it
is used to pass and enjoy time in various ways. Video gaming is considered to be helpful in terms of
improvement of cognitive functions, hand and eye coordination, quick thinking and accuracy, decision making
skills, and encouragement of teamwork.

In every creation, positivity can be declared in its function, but we cannot remove the fact that it also possesses
its negativity, because positive can never be describe without negative, same as light can never be seen without
darkness. Video games are considered to create aggressive behaviour and social isolation; teens are spending
too much time playing games than playing outdoors. Video games are making teens socially isolated. Teenagers
who play too much video games are also less likely to indulge in extracurricular activities like reading, writing
and participating in sports.

But the games are not the ones to be blamed, first of all, video games does not decide whether the gamer should
play over the night, video games does not decide for us, if we should stop indulging with physical activities,
video games, does not tell us, to isolate ourselves to others. It is within every person that plays video games
decision to try playing violent games in the first place. Video games that contains violent actions or scenes
provides precaution to every player before you start that game, before a violent game can be released to the
public it is being examined, it is being played by the game maker or programmer themselves, and it is being
critique by known government employees and by the company that will produce it. Most studies conducted on
video game violence are either experimental studies, which focus on the short-term physiological effects of
playing violent video games in a laboratory setting, or correlation studies, which involves participants filling out
surveys. One problem with experimental studies is that they analyse only short term effects right after the
participants play violent video games, which does not necessarily reveal anything about whether if violent video
games make the participants more aggressive in the long term. Some other problems with experimental studies
include small sample sizes, arbitrary definition of which games are violent and which are not, and inability to
control certain variables such as the level of excitement of participants. Correlations studies have fewer
problems in terms of methodology, but they are affected by certain biases depending on the group of
respondents that were sampled. Video games are not the ones to be blamed but the irresponsible act of the
person, Osama Binladen does not also play video games but he showed violence, a lot of illegal armed forces
does not even have any Idea about video games, still they act violently. And video games are also tools for
social interactions. Friendship can sometimes be developed through online video games and it can also keep
them away from the other harm of the surroundings which are drugs, and gangs. Video games change your
brain, according to University of Wisconsin psychologist C. Shawn Green. Playing video games change the
brain’s physical structure the same way as do learning to read, playing the piano, or navigating using a map.
Much like exercise can build muscle, the powerful combination of concentration and rewarding surges of
neurotransmitters like dopamine strengthen neural circuits that can build the brain. Video games are actually
good for us, only the abusive players made it look bad.

In conclusion, in order to find a conclusive relationship between violent video games and human behaviour, the
academic community needs to develop more advanced research techniques and to conduct more long-term
studies such as longitudinal studies. Until we have a clear understanding of the relationship between video game
violence and human aggression, we should not and cannot conclude that playing violent video games will make
a person more aggressive as a consequence. The author of this paper himself concludes that he is an evidence
that it is not the video game that makes the persons behaviour bad, but the persons attitude, discipline, and
perspective towards a game itself, for he himself is a gamer.
