Solution:
C = 100; D = 500; L = 50; X = 10; V = 5; CD = 500 – 100 = 400.
= 400 + 50 + 10 + 5 = 465

8. Express as Roman numerals – MCMLXXXIV


Solution:
M = 1000; CM = 1000-100 = 900; XXX = 30; IV = 4
=1000 + 900 + 50 + 30 + 4 = 1984

9. Which of the Roman numeral is correct?


(a) IC (b) XD (c) VL (d) DM
Solution: Option (b)
(a) IC : Wrong answer as we cannot subtract I from 100.
(b) XD : Correct answer X – 10, D – 500.
= 500 – 10 = 490.
(c) VL : Wrong answer as we cannot subtract V from L
(d) DM : Wrong answer as we cannot subtract D from M

2 – Marks:
1. Write the expanded form of 563408.
Solution:
563408 = 5 100000 + 6 10000 + 3 1000 + 4 100 + 0 + 8 1
= 500000 + 60000 + 3000 + 400 + 0 + 8

2. Find the difference of place values of two’s, 6’s in 65810624.


Solution:
In 65810624, place value’s of 6 are 60000000 and 600
Difference = 60000000 – 600 = 59,999,400

3. Write the greatest and smallest 4 digit number using 5, 6, 0, 9.


Solution:
Greatest 4 digit number = 9,650.
Smallest 4 digit number = 5,069.

4. What comes after and before 10000000?


Solution:
10,000,001 comes after 10000000
9,999,999 comes before 10000000

5. Which is lesser: 85740264 or 85610784.


Solution:
85740264 > 85610784.

3 – Marks:
1. How many 6 digit numbers are there in all?
Solution:
The largest 6 digit number = 999999
The smallest 6 digit number = 100000
Number of all 6 digit numbers = ( 999999 – 100000) + 1
= 900,000

2. Round off 14850 to nearest 10’s, 100’s, 1000’s place.


Solution:
10’s place: 14850 = less than 5 = 14850.
100’s place : 14850 = equal to 5 = 14,900
1000’s place : 14850 = more than 5 = 15,000.

3. Estimate the sum (304 + 243) to the nearest hundred.


Solution:

Estimation nearest 100’s place:


364 = 400
243 = 200
Sum = 400 + 200 = 600.

4. Estimate the difference of (973-368) to the nearest hundred’s place.


Solution:
Estimation nearest 100’s place for 973 = 1000
Estimation nearest 100’s place for 368 = 400.
Difference = 1000 – 400 = 600.

5. Estimate product of 24 and 85.


Solution:
Estimation of 24: 10’s place considered = 20.
Estimation of 85 : 10’s place considered = 90.
Product = 20  90 = 1800

6. Estimate quotient of 725  25


Solution:
Estimation considering 100’s place for 725 = 700.
Estimation considering 10’s place for 25 = 30.

repetition.
Solution:
Greatest 6 digit number with repetition = 777,510
Smallest 6 digit number with repetition = 100,057.

2. Arrange in Descending order 4123676, 71204381, 176489, 3240973.


Solution:
4123673 = 7 digits; 71204381 = 8 digits; 176489 = 6 digits; 3240973 = 7 digits
Ascending order: 71204381, 4123676, 3240973, 176489.

3. The difference between two numbers is 3856749. If the smaller number is 2565638. Find
the greater number.
Solution:
Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference
Given: difference = 3856749
Subtrahend = 2565638
Hence, minuend = Difference + Subtrahend
= 6,422,387

4. The mass of a bag is 2kg 890g. What is the mass of 14 such bags?
Solution:
Mass of a bag = 2kg 890g.
Mass of 14 bags = (2kg 890g)  14
=40kg 460g

5. A thread of length 20m has been divided into 5 pieces. What is the length of each piece?
Solution:
Total length of cloth = 20m
Number of pieces required = 5 pieces
Hence, the length of each piece = = 20  5 = 4m

6. A man had Rs. 20878560 amount in his bank. He withdrew Rs. 4836980 in the month of
January, Rs. 395648 in the month of February and Rs. 45,000 in the month of march. What is
the amount remaining in his bank account by the end of march?
Solution: Total amount in bank = Rs. 2,08,78,560
Amount withdrawn in January = Rs.48,36,980
Amount withdrawn in February = Rs. 3,95,648
Amount withdrawn in March = Rs. 45,000
Amount remaining in bank account by end of march = Rs. 1,56,00,932.
