Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! This will be a wonderful year and I am so excited to get
the privilege of working with you and your child. My name is Tyler Alt and I will be your child’s teacher
for this year. We will be working both in the classroom and pushing out into some inclusion classes
together but I will be handling all of their modifications and accommodations along the way. This is my
third year at Gulf Breeze and I’m greatly looking forward to working in this community.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but visited Gulf Breeze many times as a child to see my
uncle who lives in the area, He was a teacher and his impact on the community is what sparked my
interest in the teaching profession in the first place. I then attended Elon University on a football
scholarship and majored in elementary education. While at Elon, I learned to excel in time management
by balancing a full course load with the rigors of Division I athletics, becoming a two-time Academic All-
Conference starter for the Phoenix. I also developed a love for teaching. It was my uncle who introduced
me to the profession of teaching, but it was my time at Elon that inspired me to name it my calling.
Elon’s nationally ranked top 25 Elementary Education program provided me with an abundance of
opportunities to actually go into schools early on in my freshman and sophomore years. By the time I
graduated I had interned and taught in five different Title I schools around the community. I believe my
success academically and athletically, as well as my high standards for my students allows me to be a
strong male role model in my students lives and ultimately benefit them that unique way. I then spent a
year pursuing my masters in Special Education at Concord University. As well as teaching ESE I am also
The head Track coach and an assistant coach for football and basketball programs.

After going through the syllabus please feel free to reach out to me to ask any questions or
voice any concerns. My contact information can be found below and on the class website. Thank you for
the opportunity to teach and grow with your child!

Procedures

During the school year your child will be learning while moving around and being interactive. During the

first few weeks your child will be learning the procedures from the student code of conduct.

There is a restroom inside the classroom. My only rules for using the restroom is please don’t go while I

am teaching unless it is an emergency.

Curriculum and Accommodations

Your child will receive academics using a modified curriculum in reading, math, science, and social

studies unless stated different in their personal schedules. Accommodations will be given during testing

as written in your child’s IEP.

Attendance

Student attendance is very important for your child’s learning. If your child is absent they will receive a

folder of their missed work and have 1 week to complete it as homework.

Grading

Your child will receive a quarterly report card showing their grades and current performances. They will

also receive quarterly progress reports showing their current status towards their IEP goals. Students

will be graded based on their performance and testing using a modified curriculum.

Jobs

Some 11th and 12th grade students will be given jobs in the field outside of school for them to

complete. Please make sure your child is at school for job days. Job schedule will be given soon. Jobs will

take place during school hours of 1st-3rd period.

Field Trips

All students will be taking monthly field trip to learn real world skills. Some field trips may involve going to a

grocery store and learning to buy groceries with a budget. Also possible job interviews.

Parties

I will be having parties to celebrate certain holidays. More information will be given closer to time of holidays.

Students are allowed to celebrate their birthdays at school. Please give me a heads up if you plan to bring cupcakes

to celebrate your child’s birthday.

Homework

Most nights your child will be bringing home homework in reading and math. Homework is not for a grade. It is for

your child to receive extra practice on the skills that were taught during the school day. All homework will be

written in your child’s student planner and will be placed in a take home folder. This folder needs to be brought

back to school every day. Homework will also be posted on my website.

Contact Information

My contact information was given at the bottom of page one. Please keep it if you need anything or have any

questions. During school hours I do ask that you email me. While teaching I may not be able to answer my phone.

Email would be the best point of contact and I reply as soon as I can. After school hours you may call me on my

cell. Please do not give your child my cell number.
