CHAPTER 1:

INTRODUCTION

These days, more and more students are bringing cell phones to class. Even elementary school-
aged students have cell phones in their pockets and backpacks. The rule to ban cell phones in
classrooms opens again the debate about whether or not students should have cell phones in
school. It also brings up the question of whether it’s possible for technology to exist in the
classroom as a learning tool—rather than simply a distraction. (Oxford Learning, 2019).

The use of gadgets, in early childhood today has become common in the daily lives of modern
society. Even though it has benefits, it is undeniable that in fact gadget actually has negative
effects on the growth and development process of students. Using gadgets can even ruin the
moral and character building of students which are not potentially expected by parents. This
paper aims to describe the effects of gadget prohibition on the character education of early
childhood. This study belongs to descriptive quantitative where the data were gathered
through library research and interviews. The result showed that giving access to gadget in
students may contribute to positive and negative impacts. Students may have better motor
skills, improved cognitive skills and competition skills while on the contrary, children may face
serious issues such as speech delay, attention deficit, learning problems, even mental disorders
that can impact to their characters. (Meta Keumala et al., 2018)

The use of Gadgets inside a school environment has many benefits for both students and
teachers and generally provides many conveniences in the teaching and learning process.
Gadgets also have a great contribution for learning process, such as in evaluating student
learning. (Yonanda Avelia, 2019)

Despite the positive effects of gadget use in the school, there are many negative effects about
it. First is they are distractions, second is they present as possible health issues, and third is they
promote cyber bullying, cheating and theft. (Michael Trucano, 2015)
