Dissemination of DRR Education: Key to reducing disaster risk at the school level

Background

The school as an education institution has the responsibility to deliver education. Schools, have
to plan and commit in making effort to create a conducive learning atmosphere and process to
enable the students to develop their potentials actively. Pertaining to this, the school still gains
trust as an effective institution to build the culture of disaster preparedness in societies,
particularly among students, teachers, education practitioners, other stakeholders as well as to the
public.

The knowledge and capacities of school institution, professional response and recovery
organisations, communities and individuals to effectively anticipate, respond to, and recover
from the impacts of likely, imminent or current hazard events or conditions. In the effort to
encourage schools to develop disaster preparedness, various institutions have implemented
various disaster risk reduction education programs/activities at school level. For instance,
installing early warning systems, identifying evacuation routes and preparing emergency hotline
numbers. Extra-curricular activities, capacity-building and the dissemination of information
about DRR through information education and communication (IEC) materials are needed to
change people’s attitudes toward disaster and to increase their awareness.

Process

Lawy High School uses different activities and information dissemination regarding disasters in
which it become effective and dynamic strategy in spreading out disaster education. Access to
information on what to do before, during and after disaster such as earthquake and fire are posted
in the bulletin board. Availability of school evacuation map along with signs and symbols are
easily understood and posted in every building of the school. Records of important contacts such
as MDRRMC office, PNP, hospital and rural health unit can be easily accessed through the ____
of the classroom. Besides being provided with knowledge, we invited MDRRMC and BFP to teach
student the different preparedness plan in case of disaster. Students also learned how to save lives
by participating in different drills such as earthquake and fire. Training in first aid, search and
rescue, and disaster preparedness techniques were also taught to students. Being trained in search
and rescue and being provided with knowledge to conduct such initiatives increased student’s
confidence about their ability to respond during disaster.

their self and reduce the danger they may face.

crisis

 Symposium conducted by MDRRMC and BFP help them to be aware what strategy or
preparedness they should do in case of disaster.

 Safety drills prepare the students to respond quickly, calmly and safely.

during a variety of emergency situation

results in the speedy dissemination of that knowledge. Student transfer
information about DRR to their parents and guardians, who in turn circulate it
throughout the community.
