CHAPTER 13

 Jonas is learning colors. He began to see them in his normal life, but they
didn’t last.

 Jonas said “If everything is the same, then there aren’t any choices.

 Jonas said: What if we could hold up things that were bright red, or
bright yellow, and he could choose? Instead of Sameness.

 The giver replied: He might make wrong choices.

 Not safe, the Giver suggested. Definitely not safe, Jonas said with
certainty.

 Jonas said: We have to protect people from wrong choices.

 Jonas was left with a feeling of frustration that he didn’t understand.

 Without asking permission from the giver he tried to give his new
awareness to his friends without success.

 One day the giver chose a disturbing memory. Jonas perceived the word
guns.

 He heard voices calling to one another, he was reminded of what the


giver told him that there had been a time when flesh had different
colors. Two of these men had dark brown skins, the others were light.

 The giver told Jonas that once he become the official receiver, he will be
give a new set of rules.

 The giver told Jonas that he cannot share the memories with anyone not
even a spouse.
CHAPTER 14

 Jonas experience the memory of broken legs and all the pain thereof. He asked the
giver for pain relief and the answer was no.

 Jonas walked home limping. His father asked if something was wrong and offered
medication but Jonas remembered the rules that he can not take any medication
regarding his training and no discussion about his training. They have never known
pain, he thought. The realization made him feel lonely.

 The daily training continued and now it always included pain. The giver led Jonas
firmly into the terrible suffering of the past.

 Jonas asked why do we have to hold these memories. The giver replied: It give us
wisdom. Without wisdom I could not be the advisor of the elders.

 Jonas asked what wisdom can come from hunger. The giver replied that in the past
a petition was made to have more births. if the families are allowed to have more
births so that we could have more laborers that can lead to hunger and starvation
followed by warfare.

 Jonas did not know the concept of warfare. He asked if he described pain to the
elders when they seek advise on the issued of increasing births. He replied No, I only
advised against increasing the population.

 The Elders only ask advise from the giver when they have a problem they have not
faced before. He reminded Jonas about the plane that flew over the community. The
elders were going to shoot it down but they asked his advise. He told them to wait.
He remembered there was a time when peopled destroyed others in fear.

 Jonas realized that the giver had memories of destructions that he would receive
and they would hurt terribly.

 The giver and Jonas were selected so that everyone would not be burdened with
these memories.

 The newchild Gabriel was growing successfully and passed the test of maturity.

 Gabriel slept soundly for the earliest part of the night. Then at the middle hours of
the night Gabe’s noise woke Jonas. He gave a memory to him and he no longer had
it.

 That he had this power frightened him. He decided not to tell.


CHAPTER 15
 When Jonas entered the Annexe the giver was rigid in his chair, his face
in his hands.

 The giver asked Jonas to take some of the pain.

 The hands came and the pain came with them and through them. A
memory that was torturing the giver.

 Jonas heard a voice next to him: “Water”. He turned and saw a boy in a
grey uniform glistening with wet fresh blood. The boy was begging for
water.

 One of Jonas’s arms was immobilized with pain and he could see
something that looked like ragged flesh and splintery bones.

 The giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done
to Jonas. Forgive me, he said.
Chapter 16

 Jonas didn’t want to go back because the war. He wanted his childhood back.

 The choice to be released was not his. He returned each day to the annexe.

 The giver was gentle with him for many days following the terrible shared memory
of war.

 There are very good memories the giver reminded Jonas.

 Jonas knew that the joy of an individual special and unique.

 For the first time Jonas received the word family.

 The giver gave his favorite memory to Jonas.

 Jonas was in a place “warmeth,”

 Jonas saw old people were in the house of old, Jonas asked “who were they?” the
giver said, “they are grandparents,”

 Jonas felt something, and the giver told him it was love.

 Jonas was confused, what did love mean, the giver told Jonas what it was.

 Jonas said to Gabriel “They could be love,”
