accomplish tasks related to jobs, and studies in as much as communicating with

others and searching for certain things. Yet people are unaware that it evolves at

a very fast rate. Messenger is one of the commonly used applications in mobile

phones, especially in millennials. Aside from being a good and easy way of

communication and a helpful tool for study purposes, this application is somehow

addictive and can cause a huge impact on the user that becomes difficult to

control.

The Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas is a private institution

of higher learning and one of the best schools in the province of Batangas. It

offers quality education that enhances the progression of students. It also

develops leaders, lifelong learners and globally competitive professionals. The

Senior High School students will serve as the respondents since it was

discovered that these students are capable of imparting the needed information

for the study.

Messenger is used for messaging, sending photos, videos, recordings and as

well as group chats. This application simply works by downloading the

application in mobile phones or any devices. Users can choose between

Facebook account and mobile numbers in setting up. Social networking can be a

connection among people, likes and dislikes, and knowledge. The following
social networking sites are commonly used by people: Yahoo Messenger,

Facebook Messenger, Blackberry Messenger (BBM), Google talk,

Google+Messenger (Adeboye, 2012, cited in Asemah and Edegoh, 2012).

According to the findings of Kogi State University (2013), 68% of the

students have access to different social media for different purposes. The

findings show that Facebook, which has Messenger application under it, is the

most used social media in their university. This data allowed presenting the

similarities to this study in terms of the students’ usage of the Messenger app.

Since applications like Messenger serves as a tool for communication and

information are used daily, it is used by many people, primarily students to be

updated with new information and to be able to communicate with others.

common in Lyceum of the Philippines University - Batangas. Students that can

access this application may have a huge effect on them and on how their usage

of Messenger may affect their academic performance. Students may or may not

have trouble utilizing it for academic purposes. Messenger has been a common

tool used today among students for communication and dissemination of

information. Its impact may vary from student to student. Such impacts may

depend on how students utilize Messenger which may affect their academic

performance either positively or negatively. Educators alike are beginning to

explore its potential toward seeing how it can help students in their learning.

Since it is apparently a novel tool in the education arena, it is useful in improving

the performances of the students in English proficiency. On the other hand, some
students prefer to stay on Messenger, than to study for their exams or doing their

assignments. The main reason is that when they are studying or searching their

course material online, they get attracted to SNS to kill the boredom. Usage of

Messenger may either lead the students to perform their least or best academic

performance.

With the situations stated above, the researcher aims to identify the

effects of Messenger utilization in the academic performance of Senior High

School in Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas. The result of this study

will be the basis of the formulation of strategies that is applicable for the

enhancement of the students’ academic performance.
