DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE

The site is for the Geotechnical Investigation Report for the Proposed Construction of Residential
Building (G+2) At Plot No: 136,6th Street, Srinivasan Nagar, Kazhipattur, Chennai-603103.

EXPLORATION PROGRAM & TECHNIQUES

After the visual inspection of the site, the subsurface investigation was carried out as mentioned below:
One exploration borehole was drilled to a maximum depth of 14.0 m.

BH - 1 was started on 23.06.2019 and completed on 24.06.2019

BH - 2 was started on 25.06.2019 and completed on 25.06.2019
BH - 3 was started on 26.06.2019 and completed on 26.06.2019
BH - 4 was started on 26.06.2019 and completed on 27.06.2019
BH - 5 was started on 27.06.2019 and completed on 27.06.2019

Rotary drilling was performed using water as drilling fluid in the sub soil with casing pipe to stabilize
the borehole up to the required depth. Field testing and sampling were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-
1981.Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was performed on the sub soil. In this test, a standard split spoon of
length about 450 mm and cutting edge diameter of 51/35 mm initially penetrates the soil for 15cm to bypass the
expected accumulated sludge at the bottom of the hole by means of a 63.5 kg (140 lb) hammer falling freely
along a guide from a height of 750 mm. The total number of rows of blows (N) required, advancing the spoon
into the bore, for another six successive 15cm (a total of 30 cm) is recorded as a measure of the soil relative
density or consistency as given in Table ~A~ Along with, for further drilling using NX impregnated Tungsten
Carbide cutter to be used to a depth till Weathered rock and NX impregnated Diamond cutter to be used in case
of hard rock.
The fieldwork was carried out under the Geo Build Engineering India Pvt Ltd. and representative
from client in accordance with Indian Standard mentioned earlier. The drilling rig used for the exploration is
calyx rig with hand operated machine, so the SPT done manually on inspection of our engineer.

GROUND WATER

Ground water table was observed from the depth of 5.0 m to 6.0 m for all the bore holes from existing
ground level during the time of field investigation. However it will fluctuate due to seasonal variations and local
sewerage disposal practice. Ground water level at ground surface is assumed in the design of foundation to
consider the worst conditions (submerged Conditions).

FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the borehole information and laboratory test results in addition to the nature of structure, the
recommendations for the proposed structure are given below The following is a summary of recommendations
for suitable type of foundations for Geotechnical Investigation Report for the Proposed Construction of
Residential Building (G+2) At Plot No: 136,6th Street, Srinivasan Nagar, Kazhipattur, Chennai-603103.One of
the important aspects of any foundation system is to satisfy the settlement criteria apart from bearing capacity
criteria. As per IS 8009 (part I) 1976 Sec 9.1.1 De Beer for the calculation of Immediate and Consolidation
Settlement.

PILE FOUNDATION

 Pile foundation shall be adopted for the proposed structure by terminating the end bearing piles in the
deep strata or in hard stratum. It is a normal practice to adopt same pile lengths, for better interaction
and to achieve uniform settlements

 Bored cast in situ- end bearing type pile should be adopted at required depth for each bore hole
because of hard rock stratum is explored.

PILE CARRYING CAPACITY

PILE CAPACITY SPECIFICATION

Pile Pile
Effective Pile Safe Load Carrying Uplift
Length diameter
length (m) Capacity (kN) Resistance (kN)
(m) (mm)

10.0 8.0 500 275 200

10.0 8.0 600 350 250

10.0 8.0 750 500 350

UPLIFT CAPACITY

Uplift capacity of piles shall be considered as 50% of the ultimate frictional capacity of Piles.

PILE GROUPING

The group efficiency shall be worked out based on number of Piles in a group. Piles shall have a
minimum spacing of 2.5 times diameter centre to centre or minimum 1.5 times diameter as clear spacing in
order to mobilise frictional resistance, which is a key factor in achieving better Pile capacities. Larger spacing is
always preferable, in case of bored piles.

PILE GROUP EFFICENCY

Pile group efficiency will depend on the pattern of arrangement of piles and number of piles in a
group. An efficiency of about 60 to 70% shall be considered for the onsite soil condition, in general. However, it
shall be decided based on pile load tests. Sequence of casting of Piles shall be such that the adjacent Piles do
not get affected during Pile drilling. Tremmie concrete shall be carried out in order to minimise segregation.
Water-cement ratio shall also be controlled in order not to be affected by water, existing inside the Pile boring.
Gradual pull out of Pile casing is necessary, to avoid necking of Piles.

PILE TESTING

The group efficiency shall be worked out based on number of Piles in a group. However, Pile load tests
are recommended to observe the performance of the Piles and to re-confirm the theoretical Pile capacities.
Load tests to be carried out after a minimum period of 1 week after driving of Pile.
www.geobuildengineering.com 5
GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING (G+2) AT KAZHIPATTUR, CHENNAI-603103.

Pile load tests should be conducted by loading up to 1.5 times the service load on working Pile, while
minimum five (2) times the service load on Pilot Piles. A minimum of (five) 2 pile load test can be conducted for
project.

DECRIPTION OF PILE SOCKETING

 The pile is to be socket in to a depth of solid rock or weathered rock to a depth above the critical level.
The critical level is defined as the depth of 15 to 20 times the diameter of the pile below which the
value of average overburden pressure and skin friction values remains constant. The critical depth is
considered only for sandy stratum.

 Extreme care should be taken to wash the base of bore hole clean before depositing concrete.

 In case of socketing in the fractured rock or weak rocks it is possible to develop the full structural
capacity of pile by providing greater penetration into such rocks in order to carry some of load in shear
between concrete and the rock.

 Apart from the calculation for pile carrying capacities, pile load test to be conducted for accurate
results.

 Beyond the critical depth the values of over burden pressure is constant but we are restricted to a
depth to critical depth alone so which the shaft resistance is very less when compared to end
resistance.

 The expansive layers found can produce uplift of piles. The ultimate tension capacity of a friction pile is
five thirds its ultimate skin friction capacity in compression.

 The skin friction in clay layer might be developed completely after certain period of time.

 In this, pile depth and distance varies from various bore holes so that the pile carrying capacities
calculated separately.

 The pile carrying capacities were significantly implies that frictional resistance is greater than end
bearing resistance which implies that it is Bored cast in situ -friction pile.

GENERAL GUIDELINES IN SOIL FILLING

If the foundation material is fine soil (clay and silt) it should be stiff. If the foundation soil is coarse-
grained (sand or gravel) it should be dense. Soft, loose, compressible, or organic top soils are not acceptable
for foundation soils and in such cases the existing weak soil should be replaced up to stiff or dense soil strata

www.geobuildengineering.com 6

OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDING (G+2) AT KAZHIPATTUR, CHENNAI-603103.

below the foundation with well compacted good quality granular soil. The minimum width of replacement shall
be length of reinforcement plus 1 meter and this will ensure that the foundation soil has sufficient bearing
capacity to withstand bearing pressures in both static and as well as seismic conditions. The foundation may be
located on the compacted granular soil fill.

GENERAL COMMENTS

The recommendations for foundation design and construction are based on the information obtained
from the boreholes drilled at site. When foundation construction is underway, the recommendations of this
report should be checked through field inspection, to validate the information for use during the construction
stage. Any variation in underground conditions revealed by the borehole should be brought to our attention for
alternate recommendations, if needed. The Professional Services performed for the preparation of report were
accomplished in accordance with current and locally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and
practices. The recommendations presented in this report are based upon the data obtained from the borings at
the indicated locations and/or from other information discussed in this report. In case of pile foundation the pile
must to be rests on the harder rock stratum, if the depth 1.00m is not strong the pile has to be advanced to till
the harder rock stratum.

EXCAVATION

Excavation through the overburden soil can be carried out by conventional equipment such as dozers
and poclain excavators. Under-excavation shall not be done, thereby not to disturb the existing foundation.
Since the proposed structure is nearby the existing building it should be care that existing foundation not to be
disturbed in any causes

DRAINAGE

It is recommended to design an effective rainwater drainage system to get rid of the consequences of
the rain water percolation into these layers. The site should be graded so as to direct rainwater and water away
from all planned structures.

FOUNDATIONS ON FILLS

In such cases the foundations have to be built under controlled conditions with proper compaction can
be designed as normal foundation. Uncontrolled fills should be excavated and they should be either refilled with
controlled fill or foundation should commence from Natural ground level. The Report and SBC calculation were
completely based on the bore holes terminated; apart from this any weak layer encountered during excavations
should also be reported to Geo build engineering India Pvt ltd.

maximum depth of 14.0 m. The report (Safe Bearing capacity) is mainly based on the investigation done in and

around bore holes explored for Residential building. The method to adopt suitable method of Ground

improvement techniques as per IS 13094:1992, before laying foundation System. Enough care may be taken to

design a suitable dewatering system while construction of foundation is in progress, so that the bottom of

excavation and foundation layer shall be relatively dry. The water seeking trees around the proposed structure

is also to be removed to avoid shrinkage cracks.
